depression with the improvement in agricul tural produce prices the farmers of york county should experience better times their produce is now- commanding a better price than at any time during the past few years wheat has during the past few months more than doubled the pricj at which it was quoted at this time last year and the increase during the past month has amounted to about 60 per cent other lines of produce have advanced in proport ion and this means a far greater buying power for a large percent- uudor cultivation which produced 1322 bushels with a market value of but 64s mixed grains in the county 1g2759 bushels of buckwheat were produced in 1932 21s bushels per acre for 746g acres with a market value of 61s4s about 3 per cent of the mixed grains of the province were grown in york last year there were 43 70s acres cultivated an average of 35s bushels to the acre which amounted to 1564 74g bushels with a total market value of 547- 661 corn for husking was produced as follows 114 acres 5s5s bushels on the ear with a market value of 1954 corn for silo was raised on 259 acres 61025 tons green with market value of 152562 potatoes were produced to the ex tent of s22301 bushels on s04g acres with a value of 328920 turnips on 5967 acres amounted to 2535975 bushels with a value of 202 87s mangels on 24s9 acres amounted to 963243 bushels with a age of the population of the county of course prices have done most of market value of 77059 and sweet the climbing since the farmer sold clover from 9518 acres produced his chief products of 1932 23795 bushels with a value of last year with wheat quoted at 127303 alfalfa totalled 74651 approximately 35 cents per bushel the york county farmers produced 734481 bushels of fall wheat on 25862 acres with a market value of 345206 spring wheat produced on 4199 acres of york county land totalled 83140 bushels with a market value of 37413 with the price of 37413 with the price of wheat hearing a point where it is nearly two and one half times the price of 1932 it is expected that the market value of the fall wheat pro viding the acreage remains near the total of last year will be between 813000 and 1000000 and the spring wheat market value between 93500 and 100000 crop prices improving other crops have advanced pro portionately to wheat market re ports indicate that the prices which the farmer will receive for root and field crops will he at least double those of the corresponding period one year ago livestock prices which have recently been weaker than grain and vegetable prices are now firming up and an increased income to the breeder seems indicat ed according to the report issued by the ontario department of agricul ture statistics branch for the year strengthening of commodity prices have been an important factor in the world trade depression difficul ty has been experienced not only by the farmers and producers of the county of york in marketing their produce and in securing a decent return for it but it has been gener al throughout the world the report stresses the point that there has been an appreciable strengthening of commidity prices during the past few months the re port also states that if the prices prevailing at the end of april 1933 could be maintained over a 12month period then the farmers would have an increased revenue of 34- 183000 throughout ontario with york county benefiting proportion ately of course if the present level of prices can be maintainedbvor the same period the increased revenue will ho even greater for the york farmers ono other bright spot rovoaled by the report is the tact that the de pressed condition in agriculture so far as prices are concerned have not affected the continuity of agricultural production grains livestock market vegetables fruits etc have maintained a high level of production and in some instances have exceeded thoso of the previous year much cleared laud in york county according to the report of the agricultural depart ment there is a total of 529740 acres of assessed land of this amount 443885 acres havo been cleared of bush or a percentage of s3 79 of the land is cleared land this is a good percentage when it is shown that only 59 g6 per cent of all land in the province of ontario has been cleared production of oats and barley was maintained at a high level last year the number of acres planted in oats was 60627 for the county of york with a yield of 2231074 bushels or 368 to the acre the market value was 557769 in barloy the number of acres sown was 19231 with a yield of 621161 bushels or 323 to tho acre and with a market valuo of 236041 peas woro produced on 1063 acres in tho county last year tho amount produced totalled 19984 bushels which a market valuo of 13189 tho ringwood it has been said that it costs noth ing to be polite yet when two stourfville youths were handed a biscuit apiece by a ringwood fellow in the presence of his wife or was it his lady friend on
