stouffvole ontario june 8 1933 large gravel tender at the june meeting of the mark- ham township council held at unionville on monday messrs hoover and roberts were awarded the contract for all the gravel re quired in the township this year for road making at a flat rate of 130 per cubic yard while this tender was slightly in excess of some others filed the tenderers agreed to pro cure all their supplies from the pits communication to our alfalfa growers in view of our ever increasing demand for alfalfa meal both in canada and also now in england we wish to make a few suggestions regarding the harvesting of same which will be a guide to those unfamiliar with the best methods ie for grinding purposes that we may be able to both improve the quality and also the volume of our product which will be necessary if we are to retain for our district the business which we have at our command first cutting hay is satisfactory for our purpose when it is cut one to two weeks ahead of blossoming swath cured and raked with dew on to retain leaves second and third cutting hay should be cured in the same way but should be cut when the first blossoms appear as hay which has reached the seed pod stage is entirely unsuited for grinding purposes hay sured in this way need be left in soil but a few days but always placed in mow in the brittle stage if weather conditions permit this ensures maximum color and grinding qualities the basis on which quotations will be made this year great care should always be taken to avoid foreign materials such as stones metal objects etc from becoming mixed with hay as they are very injur ious to our grinding equipment and breakages will be chargeable to grower when responsibility for same is apparent mow cured hay only will be purchased this year unless extreme drouth conditions should prevail growers with hay ready for disposal are requested to bring liberal sample when suitability will be established however each load will be bought on its own merits as outlined above- t at whltevale and jess cooks in whitchurch which were described as giving far superior stuff to others considered as the council are limit ed in spending power none but the highest grade could afford to be hauled general accounts were passed totalling some 500 and relief accounts amounting to 250 road accounts paid totalled about 1000 but no action was taken about decorating the hall bank manager maynard gave the council a summary of their financial standing showing back taxes com ing along well and other arrears be ing paid into the county reeve padget
