nineteen regular baptist churches formed themselves into a council at stouffville on the invitation of the first markham church to consider the advisibility of ordaining john wesley knight son of mr samuel knight of mark ham township to the gospel ministry the candidate was introduced by his pastor rev w w fleischer b a und the words of affection and confidence in the candidate which he said spoken as they were before the members of the home church and with their evident approval were a token of the high christian character of mr knight poster w j h brown the moderator of the council then call ed upon the candidate for an account of his conversion in re sponse a simpleyet lucid testimony was given that left the hearers in no doubt as to the reality of his christian experience in like manner the statement of mr knight regarding his call to the ministry left no room for doubt that the lord had already laid his ordaining hand upon him in pro ceeding to lils statement of christian doctrine the candidate again mani fested that same sincerity and directness previously shown the statement read by him was com prehensive and yet succinct and the best of all vas the last quarter of an hour when without a scrap of paper to refer to he quietly and effectively answered a barrage of questions from all quarters the council unanimously resolved to fellowship brother knight on all three points conversion call and doctrine and to proceed with the ordination service half an hour was then spent in prayer and the friends then proceeded to the church parlors for supper in the evening the ordination service proper was held before a full house rev mr carew gave the charge to the candidate be not weary in well doing and the reason for in due seasonthou shalt reap pastor w j north toronto the farmers in the potato grow ing section of uxbridge township and whitchurch township near ballantrae find themselves in a very happy condition this year respect ing the marketing of tubers to that which prevailed last year when they werejforced to sell at as low a price as 25c per bag the failure of the crop in new brunswick and other potato growing proviuees leaves the local market this fall without the competition which proved so fatal last year because of superiour marketing conditions iu these outside places potato growers have seen the market quotations for their product making a steady rise of half a dollar a bag in the last ten days a couple of weeks ago the price was 110 per bag at ballantrae and goodwood and growers were hurrying their tubers to market for fear the price would decline early last week the demand became greater than the supply and the price steadily climed to 150 it may go higher but there is no guarantee although some are talk ing 250 per bag and more this unusual situation due only to crop shortage should not inter fere with the local growers market ing their product in a better condition than in former years potatoes today to secure the best market must be graded and done up in new bags that is the manner in which the new brunswick stock came to the ontario market last year and virtually destroying the sale of ontario tubers the situa tion would have repeated itself this fall had the maritime crop not been more or less of a failure the move ment to grow and market ontario potatoes to meet this outside competition is growing in some sections although little or nothing has been done in the local district we note by the alliston herald that as association of potato growers has recently been formed in simcoe county and they have enquiries from a source which will use 1000 carloads but the association will only be able to supply 100 car loads this season only a couple of weeks ago a central association was form ed in toronto at this meeting representatives from simcoe duff- erin and peel were present and organized the central potato growers association whitchurch and uxbridge townships were not represented at the meeting the officers are j s martin orangeville pres vice pres arthur walt craighurst secretary treasurer carl whiteside alliston the board of directors is composed of the president and secretary of the potato growers association at caledon orangeville whitfield alliston craighurst and new lowell the objects of the organizations are to conduct a publicity and educational campaign for the pur pose of educating the consuming public on the quality of ontario potatoes to continue in an educa tional and concise manner lor the purpose of further improving cultural methods to assist local associations in tho growing and marketing of high class potatoes ontario potato growers have been embarrassed by imported potatoes replacing their stock on ontario markets and are pursuing a course which they are satisfied will bring about a favorable change they know that ontario potatoes cannot be excelled if grown and marketed scientifically they purpose to correct any weakness which may have been allowed to creep into their methods during the past only potatoes grown under departmental supervision and ful- fillng regulations laid down by the members will he entitled to the marketing privileges and ship under the brand name yet to be chosen the federal department of agricul ture is cooperating with its inspection service this scheme of the systematic production and marketing of potatoes had ilts birth in barrie when s l page north simcoe agricultural representative called a meeting of all growers in simcoe county as well as interested town ship reeves the county council endorsed the scheme at its juno session and made a grant for an exhibit at tho royal winter fair at the cne there was a very large exhibit in the coliseum which attracted much attention from consumer and producer there were numerous inquiries the exhibit cost a lot of money numerous inquiries were also received at the county exhibit the quality was splendid and the 9lze uniform it is proposed to hold 200 in tobacco stolen from tho forsyth bros uniourille also suiters big interest in the school fair thieves entered the barber shop of forsyth brothers on thursday night of last week or early friday morning and made a successful get away with between 100 and 200 worth of tobacco and chocolate bars an entrance to the shop was gained by forcing the door with a crow bar or other heavy tool when once this was accomplished the rest was easy as the tobacco stock is not under a special lock the first intimation of anything being wrong on friday morning was when leslie rowbotham saw the barber shop door partly open at 7 oclock while he was on his way to work he called across the street to christie armstrong and dick rae who investigated and then went after mr forsyth the county police were at lonce notified and constable kirk was soon on the job but so far no arrests have been made nor is there any clue as to the guilty ones something frightened them the shop must have been entered after midnight as red forsyth was there until 12 oclock evident ly the place was robbed within an hour or two after mr forsyth left for home it would seem that the thieves must have been disturbed in their dirty work for they cleared off everything on two shelves in the show case and left a great deal more tobacco untouched which was much handier to secure after load ing up the small goods which had been on display in the show case they may have been disturbed by a passing auto otherwise they might easily have taken a quantity of tobacco done lin convenient sized packages not yet opened as it came from the wholesale other villages visited this sort of stealing bus been go ing on in various municipalities within an easy radius of toronto and this leads to the idea that local parties are not implicated in fact the same night that forsyths shop was entered the grocery store of browns at unionville was also burglarized and a large quantity of tobacco was taken but the other goods were untouched the previous evening to this escapage the drug store of everett shortridge at brooklin was robbed when 300 in cash was taken from the register and tobacco fountain pens etc to the value of 200 carried off every class was filled and com petition keen best fruit dis play of any fair among the churches sale register thursday sept 26th entire herd of dairy cattle belonging be brave and content sadly missed by wife and family if any one ever had a real notion that a school fair was not warranted at stouffville that idea ought to have been completely dispelled from mind after the wonderful exhibition staged here on monday of this week the sixth aunual event was the larg est yet witnessed this fall by the local district representative of agri culture air r e white this in dividual expressed his surprise to the tribune when he said that he was looking for stouffville to hold one of tho smaller fairs of the sea son because we had only a few schools in the fair district six in number outside of stouffville school as compared to others where fifteen aud twenty schools participate the fine warm weather added much to the pleasure of the fair aud was responsible for the large crowd which filled the grand stand to wit ness the drills public speaking com petitions and other events the prize list was so well filled that additional money will have to be raised to meet the prize awards small as they are in each case the judges stated that the exhibition of fruit was the finest they had seen at any fair and they have been at one every day this month the strathcona drill proved inter esting and was won by room 4 of stouffville school the other con testants finished in this manner nos 17 22 and 19 5markham room o room 3 stouffvjlle in the senior wilkinson and w- a fydell acted as judges and the former made the announcement of the winners before the grand stand the live stock end of the fair might be much improved although in poultry there is a big interest taken why not in young cattle and horses the schools participating in the stouffville fair are lenionville ring- wood blooniington dixon hill mon golia and the 9th line schol mark ham
