of health and ratepayers should value the information they contain from week to week insects play an important part in the spread of disease typhus fever which was also known as jail ship fever is spread by the body louse and has disappeared as a re sult of greater cleanliness yellow fever and malaria are spread by cer tain kinds of mosquitoes in canada our chief insect pro blem from the standpoint of disease amongst human oeings is the com mon house fly because the fly is covered with minute hairs and be cause of its habit of lighting and feeding on all sorts of filth the fly carries and transfers filth from place to another flies feed on anything including body waste and secretions when they light on such matter it sticks to them and they carry it to their next point of rest which may be the milk jug the sugar bowl or the food on the table if the filth in which they have been contained disease germs they carry ese along with the filth the fly feeds by sucking up its food if the food is dry the insect discharges fluid from its stomach to moisten it and thus it passes out some of the filth it has previously fed upon to whatever it now seeks to eat flies breed in any collection of waste organic matter such as gar bage but preferably on horse man ure such breeding should be pre vented by proper covers and regular removal outside privies should be screened to prevent entrance of flies houses should be screened flies should never be allowed to light on the baby or his food they are fre quently responsible for thespread of summer diarrhoea flies are really dangerous they do spread diseases and so should be destroyed questions concerning health ad dressed to dr f a dales moh will be answered byiletter questions as to diagnosis and treatment will not be expendi tures on county roads and bridges the general rate will be six and a half and for good roads two and a half the dobson bridge at cann- ington will be constructed at a cost of 188557 the village agrees to purchase from the county the super structure of the old bridge at a cost of 64270 repairs will be made to several other bridges in the county council which was in session last week at whitby referred back to the board of railway commissioners an order asking the county to instal a wigwag signal at the cpr station crossing at myrtle on the ground that inasmuch as this bridge is on the whitbylindsay highway this is a matter between the province of ontario and the railway board the atherley bridge question still remains unsettled with a committee still endeavouring to induce the federal government to pay its share of 40 per cent ot the cost of the structure erected between the coun ties of ontario and simcoe over a government controlled stream it was told council last week by war den gm forsyth that the govern ment in 1926 issued cheque for 40- 000 for its share of the cost of the bridge but that so far no person had come to claim it the county has lost 4000 in interest on that cheque and the end is not yet so far as ex pense is concerned to the two coun ties if the government still refused to pay its share of alterations made in the construction of the bridge on the order of its engineers the bridge was supposed to cost 100000 but the extra alterations increased that amount by 15000 warden g m forsyth brought to councils attention the matter of the indiscriminate slaughter of certain small game in the county principally by tourists and suggested that coun cil take action to have a restricted area established the council will take this suggestion into considera tion at the november session council voted down a motion in troduced by reeve warren dear born ot east whitby that the coun ty ask the department of public works at ottawa to complete the construction of the harbor at os- hawa exmayor john stacey of oshawa asked for councils support on this matter stating that the har bor would be of general benefit to the county reeve a w jackson opposed the motion and got councils support on the ground that the ex penditure recommended was an ex travagant and useless one as the harbor at oshawa if reconstructed would be of little use to oshawa he stated that whitby had the best harbor on the lake and in the event of developments there it could be made to serve oshawa by transport ing goods by rail to that city green river football monday afternoon was featured by a large and representative depu tation of ratepayers complaining of the deplorable condition of the 6th concession north of unionville and asking what action the council plan ed a d bruce of gormley acted as spokesman for the deputation and ably laid the case before the mem bers of the council reeve gohn re viewed the events leading up to the taking hack of the road hy the town ship from the county when the readjustment of county road mileage was made it was agreed that some additional road should be taken in markham the fourth was suggest ed but as it was close to the sixth the suggestion could not be enter tained the only alternative was for the township to take back the sixth and have the county take the fourth and eighth concessions as county roads which was agreed to reeve gohn explained that the township was thus relieved of the upkeep of the eighth and the construction of several costly bridges and the upkeep of the fourth and he felt that if this money was expended on the sixth it should be kept in a good state of re pair especially he thought this would be the case when the county had completed the construction work as the eighth would then pro bably take much of the heavy traffic which now comes down the sixth he said that the council had gone over the road and had let the contract for drainage work at the schoolhouse and for the resurfacing of certain had stretches this contract was let and the contractor was already on the ground and in addition to this the whole of the road would be patched this year mr bruce suggested that since the county was now relieved of the langstaff sideroad which is now a provincial road they should now take back the sixth mr gohn pointed out that although the langstaff side- road was now a provincial road the county was still liable for a certain portion of the expenditure a member of the deputation asked if the council thought that it was really possible to keep up the sixth reeve i certainly think we can deputyreeve padget suggested that probably the county should maintain the sixth when it was tak ing the traffic diverted when the 8th was under construction a member of the deputation drew attention to the ditches and to cer tain places where culverts were needed to keep the water from runn ing down the road another mem ber said that there was a hole in front of his gate pretty near big enough to bury a horse councillor smith theres no doubt the road is in bad shape and it will cost the township a pile of money to keep it up question would ip be possible for the township to get financial as sistance to maintain the road reeve gohn it would if we could prove that the township could not keep it up it is admittedly one of the worst pieces of road in the whole system of the county this spring the stretch at the schoolhouse is one of the most difficult places to drain in the whole county and the unusu ally hard winter and spring played havoc with it this year deputyreeve padget suggested that inasmuch as he understood the minister of highsways had powerto make a special grant to any road which was carrying an undue amount of traffic that representations to this effect be made to hon gs henry there is a possibility that if this is done the council will be supported by a deputation of the ratepayers the deputation retired after the assurance that the council would do all possible to maintain the road the deputation numbered thirtytwo strong a second deputation numbering 12 of the residents of helen avenue south of unionville appeared in sup port of a petition which was accept ed last year asking that a macadam bound roadway be constructed on this street as a local improvement an enabling bylaw was passed and the work will be proceeded with this year the entire cost of the work will be born by the property owners concerned who will pay for the work over a period of ten years tho work will be under the direction of en
