to deal with this year is the question of water rates are we due for a reduction now that the domestic system is free of debt at least on the surface it would seem that the course for the new council to pursue is one of reduced rates to create a sinking fund of the en tire revenue is scarcely warranted although a sinking fund should and must be arranged lor the total receipts from water ser vices during the year just closed amounts to 2524 while 600 addi tional was received from the rate payers as hydrant rental which with a few minor items of revenue and a bank balance of 529 at the beginn ing of 1927 make a total of 3732 we have spent it all with the excep tion of 432 but have met claims which will not have to be disposed of again a note was paid off in favor of robt brown for 1500 which was the balance due for the construction of the new reservoii a few years ago and 1000 annually has been paid to the general tax pay ers of the town because they have paid the debentures amounting to 1400 per i annum- for the original plant now these debentures are paij ujaso hence it remains to be seen whether the- oiincll will con tinue to pay overl000 to the gen eralaccount for past favors even if they should concede this amount to the general revenue there is the 1500 surplus that- will continue to pile up as there are no more notes to pay the new council will be called upon to dispose of this surplus either by a reduction in rates and tho setting aside of a stated sum for sinking fund account or they may maintain the present rates and create a big bank balance any reduction in rates should be permanent as a cut this year and ah increase next year will only tend to create genoral dissatisfaction what ever step is taken should be made only after careful consideration of the whole question and this we feel sure the incoming legislators will give death came with startling sudden ness to mrs moyer widow of the late david moyer of dicksons hill just at
