brought to this historic spot on the main day thursday by automobiles many of a most expen sive make to witness this great contest on the land held under aus pices of the ontafio plowmens association among them were ladies and girls stylishly dressed and well groomed men all interest ed in the back to the land move ment one of the big events of the afternoon- which lifted itself from what might be called monotony of that marvellous furrowmaki ngwas the winning by default by mayor harry stephens of niagara falls of the contest in which he challenged the world to meet him the judges made him produce his knowledge of plowing by- practical methods even though there was no opposi tion mayor h j anderson of welland had accepted the challenge but for some reason he did not show up mayor stephens used a pair of gigantic oxen sent down from mani toba to take part in the plowmens tournament and carried it off very well plowing a furrow which looked quite all right the spectators agreed the oxen together weigh thirtysix hundred pounds the plow used is 102 years old one of the first metal plows made in canada another interesting contest was between j lockie wilson and the president of the plowmen associa tion j j duffus of peterboro the big oxen were also used in this bat tle but they dragged an ordinary plow the spectators and judges agreed thatit should be called a draw so messrs duffus and wilson shook hands and let it go at that all afternoon the crowds ranged the plowing fields or those parts the plowers were not using there was plenty of mud many a flapper was compelled to retrieve her high heel ed slipper and there were lots of muddled silken hose taken home at night people who took notice said most of the cars had canadian licenses they were parked in all directions in every conceivable spot within half a mile of the plowing some of the farmers made a good thing out of it by charg lh cents foi parking to many of the uniniti ated the plowing match perhaps will mean but little all he will see is dozens of teams moving about the fields and the plowmen taking spe cial pains with their work but to the immense crowds of canadian and united states farmers who are on saturday with reeve cassie presiding council decided by a un animous vote to fight the toronto general hospital board rather than pay an account billed to them for the care of one edwick which the hospital authorities claimed was a resident of uxbridge and the coun cil say otherwise a writ has been issued against the township and the stage is set for the battle for which the amount involved is
