4th promises to be more than a perfunctory affair we understand that one business man who failed to get redress asked for of the assessor has appealed not only his own assess ment but that of two of the coun cillors who are members of the court one of the interesting points about courts of this nature is that when an appeal is made the assess ment may be boosted still higher if the court so desires although the appeal is for a lower assessment what will happen friday night will the court alter the assess en of the business man and will it raise or lower the sesames t of the councillors conversation drif ted to the summer tourist and the treatment of visitors and strangers to our town it is recognized as advantageous even in large cities like toron to where the traffic cop courte ously tells a stranger in the city that he has made a mis step and where minor infrac tions are oft tilmes overlooked by this important arm of the law towards motorists towns that do not have a welcome sign on every main road leading into the place are regarded as slow and out of date as a rule the sign em phasizes friendliness regardless of whether the community has it or not once there was a man who believed in signs and taking the one at the edge of town literally not those at the outskirts of stouffville he drove in prepared to havea real friendly time he walked the streets for an hour and not one person save the town cop who belched out that his car was not near enough to the curb spoke to this stranger now this is a mistake common to us all we boast of our friendliness and advertise the fact to the worm but how much do we exercise our shaking arm on strangers or discommode ourselves in order to give them pleasant re membrances of heir visit the tourist 3eason is about to open thousands of motor ists will pass through stouff ville will they get a kind re ception from you if they chance to pass your way that will cause them to want to stop hero again will you loosen have we done our share in tho past to make them pay it is to be hoped that after this season is over every one of us can ans wer in the affirmative mcssrshiram and robert winter- stein were in markham season of the year it is never very difficult to find some corner of your premises which will be benefitted by a bit of raking and burning of rubbish clean things up and be proud of your premises so says the newmarket express a division court case at meaford arising out of the sale of a quantity of butter mixed with lard attracted a large crowd at the hearing john son and tomlinson of meaford had purchased 28 prints of butter from mrs geo s hill and placed it in the refrigerator the price paid for the butter was 35c a pound the quality of the 28 prints being extra fine customers brought back some of tho mixed prints and the merchants ask ed hill to take it off their hands but he refused to do so they sued for the price of the seven pounds which it seems had not been made by mrs hill although sold by her to the store judge sutherland dis missed the action as there had been no implied warranty on the part of the defendant as to the quality of the butter so the question of qual ity did not enter into the deal m w vincent j wlnterstein an old and esteemed resident of markham township and village passed away at his home in mount joy at one oclock on wednesday last week born at
