stouffville ontario so many towns have taken ad vantage of the new law that en ables them to hold their municipal election on the first week in decem ber that there is no doubt it is a good thing municipal campaigns are often just as acrimonious as politi cal contests and tend to mar the happy relationship that should exist at christmas time and the joyous buoyancy of the new year there is no doubt but that christmas elec tions tend to interfere with christ mas shopping and the visiting that prevails or should prevail at that time in stouffville we have kept to the old date but there probably would be many advantages in earlier elections for one thing municipal clerks and newspaper offices would not be rushed off their feet at a time when they would like to give their attention over to other matters lord grey of falloden who was minister of war in 1914 and after in his book just published twenty- five years intimates that if the re ligion of christianity gripped the na tion as does the religion of nation alism there would be little thought of or ground for war there is no doubt he declares but that at pre sent nationalism dominates the world thousands profess christ ianity who do not practice it mil lions profess nationalism and are willing to die for it war is un doubtedly a terrible scourge and the world is casting about for a means of avoiding it but while one na tion arras other nations cannot tempt it to aggression by remaining defenceless and so we have a cease less preparation for war the pre paration will go on until the world adopts the plan of the prince of peace be not overcome of evil but overcome evil with good- nothing except death so empha sizes the transieatness of life the breruy of time as does the end of the year it seems but yesterday that the year began we will have hardly learned to write 1926 at tha head of our letters before the year s gone can it be that all the mil lions of clockticks that make a twelvemonth have been counted off and we are entering on a new year what is the account we must render of them to him who gave them to us golden moments our i richest treasure the material out of which we were to make a noble life these are old thoughts the reflec tions of many generations of reflect ing men but the old thought is ever new if we make it newly our own the old year calls for old j thoughts we need just now to look j backward and take stock of our lives and see what treasure we have gathered other than that which we must leave behind us when the last year of life is ended with us jesus irade the day the microcosm of life he compared life to a days workin a garden at the end of which the lord of the garden paid to each toiler his denarius even more im pressive is the end of the year as the figure of the end of a human life so relentlessly it nastens to its close how hopeless it is to recall the days that have flitted by so irri- vocable are the mistakes of life he who is to be our sudge when life ends now judges us for what we have done or failed to do with the year the year begins with hopes plans and resolves it ends with many failures and perhaps with some successes it the world is better than it was twelve months ago it is because some of us have not wholly failed but have cone some duties fairly well the year is be hind with all its blunders and sins but a new year is before with other opportunities the failure of old resolves is no reason tor discourage ment but rather fcr more faith and higher determination in sthe future cotributed whitchurch tp council untrue report a story calculated to prejudice the standing of the reeve of whit church among the conservatives of the township is being circulated by some one concerning a statement the reeve is credited with making at a liberal meeting held in stouffville about oct 1st the statement is in ffect that anyone who would not support the liberal candidate is a fool or words to this effect mr baker absolutely denies making any such statement and asked the editor of the tribune who was present at the meeting as to the varacity of his denial during the course of his brief remarks reeve baker appealed to the electorate strictly on the tariff issue and made no unkind or offensive statement of any kind nor did ho say anything bordering on the remark he is credited with making editor as provided by statute
