that reeve jsdougherty will stand for reelection and be may meet with opposition from some quarter exreeve amos lehman is mention ed as a probable contestant and if he runs the issue will be fought out on the right of the council buying the lots they did last summer for a public dumping ground the exreeve strongly objects to the site which he claims is too close to obrien ave although all are agreed that a dump ing ground was badly needed for the tin cans were being discarded on the public highway in an effort to get them away from some homes there is sure to be some change in the council for councillor edvv lunau has sold his property and will be leaving stouitville next year also councillor dr dales states that he wil not be in the running again and councillor silversides says im through but then opinions are always subject to revision these two last mentioned council lors may have to appeal to the rate payers again over the opposition through gravelling lovers lane which runs from the west side of dr freels property to the barkey foundry failing to get a sidewalk through this right of way some of the councillors agreed to gravel the lane and the work started last week councillor silversides ordered the workmen off the job he being chairman of the streets committee he states that the work was not authorized by the council but the man who drew the gravel said lfe got orders to do the work from dr dales who is a member of the street and sidewalk committee now councillor silversides says the council must not pay for this work as it was not properly authorized and also that it is illegal to gravel what he terms a private lane used by the public the matter of spending money on this lane has been- before councils for more than ten years and none of them have dared to spend there on the contention on the side of those favoring the spending of money here is that the two property- owners who use the lane pay taxes and are entitled to a proper footing when seen by the tribune council lor silversides was in fighting trim and said i am going to know whe ther some of the councillors have the right to order work done in my departmentof which i am chairman without the sanction of the comhilt- tee in charge and without letting the chairman know that such work is to be proceeded with it looks as if the men who ordered the work will have to pay for it the amount being approximately 30 tle matter will come under discussion at the council meeting on monday dec 15th councillor f w silvester has not declared his intentions for next year but it is expected that he will remain with the council this year he is chairman of the hydro elec tric department and considerable work was accomplished monday dec 29th is nomination day burning cross an unsolved mystery bylaw no i a bylaw providing for a fixed assessment for the lands buildings and equipment of walter muston sons few there are who dreamed thac the ku klux clan organization would ever reach stouffviue but it whereas walter muston sons have been and are carrying on business as florists at the said vil lage of stouffviue and aie the own ers of the south west ten acres of lot number 35 in the ninth con cession of the township of markham in the county of york now in the and i village of stouffviue and further upright bar aflame and people who known as lot lettered m on the saw it wondered what significance it municipal map of the said village had for stouffviue of stouffviue and have erected one theory is that it was con- 1 thereon in addition to a dwelling vcyeil here by some persons in a car house a large green house and from toronto as the construction power and healing plant and propose was much the same as the crosses to erect further and other plant and which have been b irned in that equipment and have requested the city it consisted of a place of pij- corporation of the village of stouff- ing with a cross pipe wired to the vi to agree to and to fix the main stalf and to the who e st is the avowed opinion of some that some person at least among our 1200 inhabitants is a member of that organization for on thursday night of last week a real ku klux cross was burned in j b wurts field immediately north of dr freels residence in the darkness of the night- the cross stood out very dis tinctly with its extended arm n u it- i building up your health feels their every grownup like playing unless health is not up to par for your benefit the science of chiropractic has demonstrated that an ad justment of your spine will allow the free conduct of your nerve force building up your health goodwood the following letter will be of in terest to our readers in goodwood lemonville and other sections it is from grassmere in the parry sound district and dated nov 30th we find the tribune very full of news and is interesting to ifs all we are having a good fall of snow being over a foot deep and still snowingfbut no frost in the ground the bushmen seems to think the cook has the best end of it hero i like the work we have everything that any well to do people have and our camp i would venture to say is warmer than lots of houses down south it is of log construction the hunters have all left and it seems more quiet there were eight camps within 5 miles of us i have seen deer pass within 20 rods of the house and many tracks near by a farmer and two sons killed 3 deer and3 bears the fox tracks are thicker than dog tracks around stouffviue plenty of rabbits bears wolves partridges and lots of hea vers also the lakes are full of fish the country around is rolling land with abundance of good timber cedar and pine are scarce the bushmen are cutting lovely birch and many large hemlocks maple and other hard timber our township is finleson and the government owncs a large portion only a few rods north which is covered with fine timber but be ing over 20 miles from a railroad it costs much for hauling the coun try was more populated in pioneer times as many log houses have caved in and there is clearings which were once worked most lovely and perfect christmas trees i over saw i like to see the correspondents of goodwood lemon ville glasgow and other places the few farmers here do not pay taxes thero are no schools yours truly frcd middloton ture was wired rags saturated iu coal oil another explanation for the appearance of this cross is that it was the work of boys or some men bent on amusement having got the idea from reports of crosses which have been burned in other places the origin of the ku klux clan dates back to the days when the negroes were set free froth slavery at that time the black people com mitted atrocious murders on the whites and this organization was formed to get reprisals any of our readers who have read the book en titled the clansman a story of the early days following slavery in the united states will have read of the work ot the ku klux clan at that time at a later date the kluxs directed their attention against the catholic body in quebec but who they could be after in stouffviue is more than we can guess in communicating with mr wurts the owner of the field on which the cross appeared he tells us that he attaches no importance to the mat ter and certainly is not alarmed assessment of the said lands build ings plant and- equipment now or hereafter upon the said lands for a period of five years and whereas it appears expe dient to accede to the said request and to fix the assessment of the said lands buildings plant and equip ment of the said firm for the said period therefore the municipal council of the corporation of the village of stouffviue enacts as follows 1 that the annual assessment of the above mentioned lands includ ing the business assessment together with the buildings plant and equip ment now or hereafter constructed erected or used upon or in connec tion therewith shall be and the same is hereby fixed at the sum of five thousand dollars 500000 for the years 1d25 to 1929 both inclusive and save as aforesaid the said lands buildings plant and equip ment from time to time situate upon the said lands within the said muni cipal corporation of the village of stouffviue shall be and the same are herehy exempted during the years 1925 to 1929 both inclusive from all was used for the purpose a similar cross was burned in the town of alliston
