poland russia the accounts from poland are as far as they go cheering jtbe national go vernment had published r circular relative to the batlle of ostraleoka in which no disposition is manifested to disguise the loss they had sustained but the amount is lower ihan was stated in tho reports re ceived by the late arrival the loss of the late polish army is said not to have ex ceeded two thousand the army is repos ing and reinforcing at praga whence the brave skrzyoecki issues his bulletins and circulars expressed in language which breathes any thing but diminished confi dence aod courage the loss on the rus sian side at the battle of ostraleoka is va riously stated and probably all the ac counts are more or less exaggerated a berlin paper speakiog of the report which estimated it at 15000 says this version may appear exaggerated but upon consi dering the exhausted state of the russian army previous to the battle and the vali ant defence of the poles it can surprise no one that the loss of the former should be very considerable in order to make his projected alack diebitscb bad made a furced march of 9 german miles in 24 hours and coming up to the polish troops he commenced immediately the engage ment which lasted sixteen hours without intermission the field marshal lost do- ring the battle an immense number of his soldiers whn were either killed by the fire of the poles or drowned in an attempt to swim across the river thus situated at the head of an exhausted army without either ammunition or provisions and ex pecting every moment to be attacked on the other side by gen gielgud who had crossed the narew and might sally out upon him from lomza gen diehitsch was compelled to retreat from ostraleoka this retrograde movemeot was begun on the 28th the bridge near ostroleokawas immediately burnt and the whole town was shortly after reduced to a heap of ash es on the 29th ont a single russian was to be seen on the right bank of the narew the russians suffered also much from their own artillery which keptfiripg on ostraleoka long after tbey bad taken possession of that town by an olticial letter of skrynecki to the national government dated from praga june 2d it appears that upon the very day when tho troops under his immediate command so gallantly resisted the iin- meuse superior numbers of diebitsch ano ther corps of the polish army were conduct ing with equal gallantry and better suc- epss in the neighborhood of naraweka- uocrat fcmapowiski attacked not content with exciting the 7cal of her parlizaus she has pushed her care so far as to cause following is tho article from the st petersbnrgb gazette against which a re monstrance has been made by the french to tho russian government the future is impenetrable to our eye but if it be true that all evils on earth are confined to certain bounds aod that the en viable hand which rules the world puts an end to them sooner or later we think we perceive through the threatening gloom the first ray of this consolatory truth howe- ever great the destroying rage of the revo lutionary scourge which has been chastis ing europe for these ten months may bo it is perhaps nearer being exhausted than we imagine at the aspect of italy which u restored to legitimate order and tranquil ity propagandism sees some of those seeds of anarchy which had been sown eo amply over all europe destroyed upon appear ance in the bud let it cease then to ex haust itself in murderous efforts to keep up the remaios of error and delusion which can only increase the number of victims and is not a to render the light of tho 19th century conducive to the general good these sovereigns and their governments will now have to close with their utmost efforts the terrible wounds inflicted by li beralism in the name of that light this mission which the emperor das already begun m fulfil in the midst of the cares of the war he will fully accomplish when the demon of anarchy shall have been driven from his empire by the powerful exertions of a faithful nation in the same manner as 19 years ago the invasion of napoleon was tepelled we are daily witnesses of tbe gracious acts by which the emperor dimi nishes the evils caused by a detestable re bellion thus the monarch anticipates tbe lesired moment when free from the care of wttgiog war or puoisbing be will have nothing to do but to heal the wounds which the too docile poles havo inflicted upon themselves by yielding to the influence of men whom tbey will soon learn to know better at the commencement of these remarks nf the most afflicting nature arrive tn us daily from the theatre of tho lithuanian insur rection and demonstrate to us that it is but by the developement of an energy un equalled that it can be suppressed a revolt which taking for aim the destruction of all legitimate power does not think in order to arrrive at it any means too criminal it is by threats and by theemploymontof tor ments that the lithuanian insurgents seek especially to increase their number and gibbets planted by them in all places have become the tree of liberty they have hanged in several places the public func tionaries
