scientific pursuit have resolved upon offering four silver medals for essays on scientific subjects thereby en deavouring to rouse the dormant talent of the province by exciting a praisworthy emu lation for three of these medals the competi tion will be open tn the public generally and one only will be exclusively confined to the competition of the several classes of members the medals offered are as follows 1 a silver medal for the best essay de scriptive of the quadrupeds of british north america their generic and specific characters their modes of life and uses to which they can be applied this essay to he open to general competition 2 a silver medal for the best esay de scriptive of the plants indigenous to the canadas their generic andspecific characters their habitats and their uses medical and economical this essay to be open to the competition of the honorary ccrresponding and ordinary members of the society resi dent in the british north american provin ces only 3 a silver medal for the best essay on any branch of general literature the partic ular subject thereof to be chosen by the re spective authors this essay to be open to general competition 4 a silver medal for the best essay on any branch of philosophy or science other than natural history the particular subject thereof to be chosen by the respective au thors this essay to be open to general com petition the society being anxious to encourage general talent imposes no lestrktion as to the jualitication of competitors for the medals urther than that they shall be resident or usually so of some one of the british north american provinces nor to the language in which the essays are to be written the essays intended for the competition are to be transmitted to and to be received by a f holmes
