the chronicle to the editor of the kingston chronicle sir i think i may say with truth that i yield to no man in a wish and zeal to promote the interests of the couutry ofmy residence and as it is knowledge that makes a principal difference between either brute or savage society and a civilized population whatever tends to increase knowledge must tend also to the increase of civiliza tion and as the rubbing of rough substances together produces smoothness so the col lision of intellect or the rubbing together of different and opposite minds produces that polish which retired and abstract study alone cannot effect besides the sparks of one mans genius thrown into the materials combustible of another mans imagination produces that effervescence before which the shackles of ignorance become like threads of tow touched with the fire then the introduction ofquestioos which briugsthe mind fully into play and some times half strains its powers not only in creases its knowledge but also strengthens its faculties in the same way as exercine and labour do the sinews of a healthy man however as the exercise of either body or mind is only labour lost unless it he di rected toward some profitable end then- fore if the present happy taste which seems to prevail for the investigation and solution ofquestioos and propositions should con tinue i think it would be well worth a word
