rest of the time with our friends we spent sing ing one boy played a bongo- type drum and the aunt makes a very loud noise by snapping her fingers against her hand sheila played guitar and they added rhythm sang some per sian songs and danced persian dances in the evening we drove to the other side of teheran to visit one boys father and fam ily his brother is blind and plays violin flute and a string ed instrument like an autoharp that has a beautiful sound he has performed on tv and radio quite good the two brothers sang for us in harmony and then taped us when we sang we sounded funny on the play back the blind boy came back to the apartment for the night that made 11 people staying there next day patti went to the embassy and came back with lots of letters 13 for karen and 5 for me we decided to leave for mashed on the first available bus but when we got to the bus station there was nothing until the next morning at 8 am we didnt want to wait around decided to hitch even tho it was getting dark and we didnt even know which was the way to mashed road within a few hundred yards of the bus station i asked a boy which was the w to mashed he kept saying that we had to wait until the next day for a bus and we kept saying that we didnt want to spend money on a hotel as confusion moun ted and a crowd of about 30 we escaped around the corner to make plans the next thing we knew the fellow was beside us said he would take us home with him and then we could stay there until we knew what we wanted to do thats here we are now bey- rus spelling and his two friends are language students the anglican church of canada st george 60 guelph st lent h 800 am holy eucharist bac corporate communion 930 am choral eucharist 11 am choral eucharist friday february u 430 pm tommy meets professor wavelength at the university they are studying english and so we spend lots of time helping them with their english they actual ly speak very well we had an interesting evening learning about persian poetry they read for us and more about educat ion in iran iran is more ad vanced than many countries we have been through they have a good primary school setup as all the children must go to school whereas in turkey we saw little children working much of the time also the les sons the atas children worked at didnt appear to be very ad vanced for their age group this morning we went to a public haman heaven we got beautifully clean and washed all our clothes that had been festering in our string bags there are little rooms that hold 2 or 3 people and lots and lots and lots of hot water i think it is funny that you worry about being dirty as we have only rarely been without a place to wash when we wanted it and as for the mysterious east there is no mystery only dif ferent customs that for the most part are very sensible for this part of the world i imagine afghanistan will be quite a change tho this afternoon we went to the bazaar and it was infinitely better than the one in istanbul the carpets the brass and copperware the jewellery i wish i had loads of money and could send home a persian car pet for the living room and a big beaten brass tray to make a coffee table and handpainted persian vases and dishes and rings and earrings for the girls and antique swords and guns for the boys and hookah for dad oh well as i am a poor student anyway the near est i could come to a carpet was a handprinted tablecloth which should go well in our liv ing room if the colour scheme doesnt change too much it is beige with blue design in it and it is your christmas pres ent or part of it but i wont send it until i get to pelhi then maybe you will get it for next christmas it seems- funny not to see christmasy things about and as it is ramaian its even stranger many shops dont open until about 500 as the muslims arent supposed to eat until then altho the people we have stayed with here do not seem to keep the fast on friday everything was closed as it was their holiday satur days and sundays everything is open well be on the road again by monday and should soon be in afghanistan we reckon that it will take us a little over s weeks to get to delhi ten days of busing and the odd day supper schick blades v potato sticks peek freak biscuits drive detergent fruit cocktail carrots tm05 2s59 2bw one more reason why we say we red i v a v iga lucky shopper
