georgetown herald pubdskwl by horn nwtupr umitod 22 min5trwt gofglown ontario thursday january 24lh 1963 editorial comment larger town demands it councils decision to ef rule gbvevrw ng indiviaifali and delegation swishing to ipeak at town council meetings u logical flop in a town develqpmfcnj and while ttwih remove the odd tit ol colourand excitement from such mee- jtigi it will contribute to a more efficient civic administration and allow time spent in jnconsequentials to be used for more ser ious council deliberation at a reporter we will miss the old practice of allowing any person the floor tvask quetidns or corpitient on lowjn t talis the rovt rule dffwnot prohibit ihu of course for m calls for a formal non ice of mteht prior to the meettng and an indication of the sublet to be discussed but it will tend to limit the number of spea ker at a meeting for some will not take this extra trouble particularly when their appearance n in the heat oflhe moment schools getting together attempt at a liason between elemen tary and high school teachers is to be com mended and should play an important part in future education in georgetown recently teachers from grade 7 and 8 met with the high school staff and decided to form a coordinating committee both i groups it is felt will be better equipped i to assist parents and studs in choosing the most suitable courses through this mu tual exchange of information and ideas creation of a full vocational and tech nical course at the local high school has made it urgent for parents to be fully aw are of the path their youngster will follow it early at possible originally with only an academic course there was little choice and it was potible to delay a career decision until the later high school years now only grade 9 ft allowed for this choice and a course once choten in grade 10 has limiting factors which can affect the whole future of a young person in coming years it wrtl become increa singly important for elementary as well as high school teachers to be informed of the education avenues and to be m a position to give counsel to young men and women a board of education which would administer affairs of both public and high schools would we feel be an addecl advan tage today georgetown had such a shortlived group several years ago which was dis banded after a years service when george town was pushed into an abortive three town high school area separate boards were fine in the days when there was a sharp separator between public and high tchools and only a small percentage of stu denls continued on to grade 9 today when there is a mass trend to h gher education separat on of school boards seems unoec essary sugar and spice 6 bill smile do you loath winter with all lungs an envious desplser of th high school guidance as we have said above is becoming increasingly important and bring ing working personnel to the school to tell girls what their jobs entail it an excellent ad u net to the work of the staff advisors the preview thould have far reaching effects on the girls who heard the lectures and who were afterwards given the oppor tunity to question speakers about a variety of positions for which they can train the idea should be extended for boys at well the housf of commtns is i convene on 21 jcinuary 1963 ll ten from my desk m otta va n lention have brought me to ota the house ol a young person so readily as hearing a story directly from a man who works at his ob and there is nothing wh ch can keep a young person at his studies better than a specific desire to reach a career goal i if the careers preview influences even one g rl to stay at school longer and toi head for a del nite goal its sponsors will have accomplished their purpose our guessl it that there will be many
