ecbe every year in bur family we spend more time talking about our holidays than most people would if they were planning atrip around the world iff the vacation was for a month three we or van two there might fa mm polnt to all tha talk but the entire dail consists of ana weak and ona weeks holi day is about as beneficial as on drink for an alcoholic it merely gets the recipient upset end instills a- mad desire for more some years we have attended weekly newspaper conventions on our holidays they are usually held about 700 miles from borne the holiday involves weeks of dis cussion about wardrobes for both hot and cold weather half a dozen firm decisions that we cant af ford it and endless fulminations to plant the kids with somebody in tha end w declare roundly to each other that w are only young once and take off in great flurry of lastmlnut reser vations and irritations and what win all the social agents tha lata hours and the long trip we arrive home completely fagged and equal ly broke tha last two bucks hav ing be spent on presents for tht kids grabbed at the cigar stand in union station on the last lap of tha journey home one year we decided to just stay home i was going to paint the trim on the house on that occa sion i learned two things that you cant get much trim painted when you knock off every half hour for refreshments and that i am constitutionally unable to work with the old lady as straw boss that year i got two and a half windows painted and they sat like that for about three years until they faded back into the shabbi- ness of tine rest of the trim each year during the fall win ter and spring we have long aml- ceble and reasonable talks about our holidays my wife agrees that it is only sensible that a man who has only a mere week should get away from his wife and family go on a fishing trip or get off with bert benton glenda quint on wed in temple hill united 1 the mail bag and each year when ipy week s holiday looms she stops toeing logical fcuman being ami reverts to being a woman she is npt going to be stuck at home with the kids while her husband goes larking off for a week with the boys en joying himself thoroughly lfs tny firm belief stated on many occasions that a man should get away from his family once a vaar and every hot disgruntled irritated mala tourist i see walk ing past my office window herd ing a horde of demanding young sters and a cross perspiring wife merely confirms my opinion- mind you i think a woman should get away from her family once in a while too every- three or four years kwife should be al lowed to go aftfl visit her mother or one of her sisters for two or three days as long as she leaves plenty of baking lots of clean laundry and dosent want to spend any money while shes away baskets of white gladioli and fern and white candles in siwerj candelabra decorated the altar of the temple hill united church on saturday august 22nd when rev charles c cochrane ba bd of wesbniount quebec men getting away for a change on their simulated pearls she carried holidays in theory what bums cascade of red roses her up is that men appearto have a woyderful time when they go on a holiday with other men and women are lust not inter in going on a aunt with other wom en it is one of the manifold un fairnesses though why it is so she cant quite explain my sug gestion that women are eternally fascinated by men and man can take women or leave them alone fails to strike a responsive chord at any rale weakling that 1 am 1 have given in again this year we have taken a cottage nearby for two weeks ill commute the first week and the second week ill have a peachy holiday sitting watching the kids while they swim oh well ive got her pretty wor ried anyway ill be staying town for lunch every the august 26th edition of the herald jm embers of the geor getown council complained that a family was forced to moved be cause of unsatisfactory sanitary conditions why all the fuss about the pail out the window when the town is pouring it out the iback door for two or three years now that white sign has gone up sayjng no swimming bacause of pollution another hot summer has practic ally gone by while residents q norval have had to travel fair dis tances for a swim or stay at hoote because of the lack of transporta tion for generations the credit river has been know as the old swim ming hole it is now an open sewer the halton county health unit has done an efficient job of immunization and posting pollution signs why criticize the health unit the town has a job to do too sincerely janice carter legion notes les curk wanted 400 to 500 members to attend oui first fall meeting in september it would be nice just i once to see that old room packed i incidentally we trust now that shei provincial convention passed it that this branch will see fit to going back to a system of sending out notices its our firm opinion that no matter whether the mem ber attends or not he is entitled lo notice of branch happenings b mail indeed it was made law at the convention that each branch must notify members we cannot see the branch not being able to afford it and feel that it is a dis grace that this branch one of the largest in ontario is one of the very few to not do this in fact in this district it is the only one we realize there is extra work mvolv- ved but feel results proved that it was worth it the miserable atten dance at special events provided by your chairmen in the past few months when notices were not sent has proved to most of us that the policy of not sending notices is ex tremely shortsighted and is part ly responsible for the flagging in- tested as indicated by your declin ing list of names on the board and we hasten to add we are not particularly promoting print ing but any kind of notice would be better than this policy of if you want to know the only way youll find out if come into the branch after all we should think about 80 per cent of the member ship do not come into the branch regularly and these men are just as good members and just as en titled to know what goes on as the man who is there every night of the week how about h fellows if you make your wishes known they will have to be recognized we hear our horseshoe stalwarts now have a thriving club of their own and are very active with the ghq at carman coplands home there are a lot of the boys in the branch play the game and we un drstand they have a fair sized club happened to be in milton branch recently and a chap comes over to bs to say hello and then asked say is ou scotty patterson still kicktef over there in georgetown ivatmdaf pings and ran across an old one when we were playing ball toge ther around 1930 or so tsk tsk john we really didnt think we were telling the truth about your age but as gord king and chub stapleton sa never mind scotty theres not man can pla ball at 51 as well as ou can hat ofr this week to councillor frcrt tut harrison for his great job on the park which he proposes as the site for the eenotapheay we feel ver strongly that this is the logical site for it and that rranch 120 should cooperate even pos sible wa to gel it mowl as soon as possible tut hjs dune a fine job in this field spending a srcit deal of ttme and effort in kcttin plans made and following through on the actual work we must rnn fess that he had ii scared out of us lait year when he was lr ing to move it up the highwa however he seems to haw found a much superior spot in this pres ent location and as the focal point of a small park it should be ideal furthermore its close to the leg ion hall and so in easy marching distance a very important point as we that arc left grow old and close to the business section and the heart of the town in case any of our readers dont know tut has always been inter ested in legion affairs and is a member of the branch he served with the army being decorated for conspicuous gallantry military medal during the italian
