what council did will engage architect for 5th publk school initial plans for a fifth george town public school took form at mondays council meeting when school board chairman ray salter asked approval to engage an arch itect and proceed with prelimin ary plans mr salter explained that the board wants to he in a position to move as fast as possible when building starts on 582 planned houses in the vicinity of the sykes tool plant the hoard is consid ering a twostorey building he said possibly 10 rooms to start and eventually 16 to 20 rooms cr harrisotf- questioned wheth er land given by delrex develop- mentsis large enough for such a school and said council shouldnt have to be in a position of having to buy extra land mr salter said the board bad approved of the land set aside for schools three properties approximately 7 acres each using a figure of 7 students per bouse although the figure is running somewhat high er in delirx and semidetached houses had not entered the pic ture at that time the 2storey structure is being planned he said not because of a land short age but because the board feels a school that large would be more efficient in that design crs hyde and elliott said they can see no rush to engage an arch itect when no house building has started and voted against engag ing an architect at t he present time cr sykes who earlier this year had criticized the school board for not moving fast at times said he is happy to see the board is adopting- a plan which might save valuable time when building starts and said council could be criticized if they did not support the boards idea council itself uses the same procedure he said pointing to engagement of water engineers two years ago to do exploratory work for future expansion asking for permission to estab lish a driving school in town gor don h was told that there is no legislation which gives coun cil control over such a busu and that it is not necessary to have council approval for such a business approval was given for erection of a house by mr storch on prop erty i n front of harry al lens home at 72 river drive the new house will be on the street frontage and mr allen is retaining a 27 foot driveway as an entrance to his house the plan is at variance with the building by law which requires a 50 foot street frontage for a house three councillors opposed the permit reeve sargent and crs sykes and gunn cr sykes said it would be setting a precedent for other property owners to do the same and that a building bylaw is useless if its clauses are not ad hered to cr harrison disagreed saying each case should be judged on its own merits approval for erection of a garage at his home was given to mervyn cook 5 normandy blvd subject to written approval from the adjoinihg
