weekly newspaper association and the ontario division of me c w ua an interesting evening those who attended the political meeting in wriggles worth school last thursday were well rewarded for their attendance they heard em excellent two hours of speechmaking questions and answers which passed all too quickly and which proved to be informative interesting and provocative after hearing the three candidates speak we are convinced that the political parties have chosen men well qualified to represent their views all are fluent interesting speakers and quick witted as was shown in the question per tod which is one of the toughest obstacles a speaker can face they paried a variety of questions with ease answering them when they could and making a graceful retreat when obstacles loomed too large one could say that divorcing political theory from the el ection it would be difficult to choose between the three m their ability sincerity and dedication to the ob of serving in parliament it was equally pleasing to see members of the audience behave as ladies and gentlemen should while questions were often pointed they were never asked in a nasty way and there were no regrettable incidents which sometimes occur in the heat of such a bipartisan meeting chairman sid hardie takes some share of the credit too for the excellent job he did in that department thanks are due to east georgetown rate payers for promoting the evening queens pk report stan hallm your legislature opened this week on the mft of march st patricks day it was a great day for the irish and was marked in the assembly by the wearing of shamrocks snd green carnations the business of the legislature started by presentation of toe es timates of the deparment of health by the hon dr phillips the estimstes amount to 73406 000 this is s huge sum of money it is not my intention to go into detail but i would like to give you a few highlights the ontario cancer treatment and research foundation receives 1 130000 grants to public hospitals 15567000 grants to the new hospital services commission for the three months from january 1st 1959 to march 31st 1059 wul amount to 4 629000 these are huge amounts but they represent the great growth and development of the province i should explain should have malton assessment increasing numbers of malton workers be coming residents of georgetown makes the ques tion of a town getting a share of an industry s assessment a logical one which should have the attention of mun cipal and provincial gov ernment a decade ago georgetown had no such problem like towns farther removed from met ropolitan areas a large percentage of workers were locally employed and any deficiencies in taxes on homes were offset by taxes pa d by the industries which employed them today it is qu te the contrary a conservative estimate her work will live on miss elirtbeth appelbe was a lady who dedicated her life to history and there is pos sibly no one in the county who possessed such a fund of knowledge about the early days in halton as she did her notes and documents are of priceless value and though she never reah zed her dream of compiling these into a printed history of the county we are sure relatives will take care to preserve these and some djythe opportunity will come to preserve a perrwnent record of long ago days which unless it s put on paper becomes lost as years go by it was our regret as an editor that we ne ver had enough time as we would have liked to chat with miss appelbe nothing could have pleased us more than to be able to take a sabbat 1959 on tuesday an oil portrait ot the lata ion mitchell f hepburn former liberal prune minister of ontario was unveiled m the as sembly by the prime minister hon lesluvetosl assisted by mr h c nixon liberal member for brant county mrs mitchell hep burn and mrs sinclair aster of mr hepburn wife present this beautiful portrait will be hung in the corridors of the parliament buildings beside other portraits of former prime ministers on march 19th hon james al ian minister of highways pre sented he estimates of his de partment in 1955 the depart ment of higtm a s spent for all purposes 47 000 000 in 1956 70 000000 and in 1958 the de partment will spend 135 000 000 from this huge sum of money to be spent 44 000 000 will be paid to municipalities through the municipal assistance grants on march 20lh the hon james allan spdnwif on behalf of the government brought to a close addresses and debates on the speech from tht throne rifly members of thi legislature have spoken in this dibate when mr allan finished his address the vote was takm in the amendment to the speech from the throne mo ed the oppositi n the amendmci t mined by mr olner leader of the opposition was that the motion for an address in repl to the speech of the hon and delve into the fascmat ng h story ourablc the 1 leulenantoovemor could place at least three hundred local homes as owned by people employed elsewhere than in local industry and if as we are told tax pay ments on a house do not equal the cost of civic serv ces entailed the farther we go the dim mer the tax future looks we should think it time for the province to study the question of allowing a dorm tory mun cipality some share of a large company s tax assessment and arrive at some formula fair to the munic pal ty in which the industry is loca ted and to the towns which harbour t employ ees thi mail ftao political mpfumncis htlvilrqi of democracy georgetown onl march 23rd 1938 the georgetown herald georgetown onc dear sir
