england and scotland many times during this trip i had the feeling that i had been there before and decided it must be because i had heard about these places so many times in ouu- history and literature clas ses in school we travelled north though the cathedral cities and spent some time in york this is one of the roman walled cities of england with nearly three miles of medie val walls and fine gates still in existence we wandered through the minster and adnircd its loth- ic achitecture and wonderful star- ned glass gindows which date to the 13th century we proceeded to edingurgh flrfd enjoyed its spendid streets beau tiful surroundings and historic as sociation thrc is a majestic rat tle which dominates the town froin every point and this has a splen did war memorial in dublin we watched the greyhounds race this was a real experience i think everything moves faster here than anywhere else in ireland there are several men stationed along the track with whom to place your bet it is important to place your mon ey with the person paying the most odds and to do this you really have to move quickly the mini mum bet is half crown about 35c on the second race the first race was over before i knew it had star ted i placed a half crown on the favourite and proceeded to cheer him in i didnt realize my cheer ing had caught the attention of a jargc group around us until infirmary and in seeing their new neurosurgical wing which is still under construction just as we were sad to leave ire land we hated to leave scotland particularly edinburgh and the beautiful trossachs however wo still had much to see so we turned south again we stopped at gretna which is notorious as the marriage place for eloping couples in scots law if a declaration of marriage was made before two or more witnesses it was legal these marriages could take place anywhere in scotland and as gretna was the first village over the border it was the favour ite fou- runaway english couples however by act of parliament in 1856 it is now necessary lo have the 21 days domicile it is now a feature of the tour that one couple gets married hy the village black smith every time the bus- goes thru irotna if the guide cant per suade any of the men in the party to got married then he goes thru the procedure himself it soenis he never has any trouble getting a lady to go along with the act the lake district of england is very lovely and we walked many miles enjoying the beauty of it chester is an interesting city and the ancient walls over two miles long arc still in an excellent state of prescrva- tion and it is possible to walk en tirely around the city on these walls we toured the beautiful 14th century cathedral here but preferred attending a service in a little parish church we went to st petersfor kvensnng and it was announced that the following week they would be celebrating the 1050th anniversary of the found ing of their church 1 in- stratfordonavon we were fortunate to sop two performances at shakespeare memorial theatre king john and as you like it the town of stratford with its half timhred half plastered hems cs is very interesting and most at tractive i was anxious to move on to ox ford lo visit with friends there the entire trwn history revolves around the life of ihe i niversit v whenever you walk in ihe town you see men and women wearing academic robes the rohrs particularly elegant that day and then our friend told us that sir ijiwrence olivier had beer given an honorary degree at one of the colleges what a wonderful city london is we were thrilled to sec the changing of the guard westmin ster abbey the houses of inrlia- in free speech at least he gets rjd of his- pent up frustrations that way we flew via british european airways from london to paris we had many preconceived ideas nt what paris would be like and some of them proved quite realistic oth ers were a little inaccurate in the daytime we walked and walked and then rested in the charming side walk cafes walking in paris was most rewarding and we certainly saw many interesting scenes it interested us to see the people on their way home with a long narrow loaf of bread without wrapper tucked under their arm at night pans takes on a new hue and becomes even more alive tlian in the div light hours pans is gay and colourful and wherever you go whether its a little cafe on the left hank or the fabulous lido nightclub people are happy and having fun and livnvsfor that moment in germany we drove al ong the autuban from frank furt to lanilstuh this is a super highway on which people i drive at a fantastic speed the re suit being that there are inniimcr- t able fatal accidents we drove through the winrstrausse which is a very lovely seel ion of the rhine valley where grapes are grown in abundance here friends took us to see the trifels a lovely old castle high up in the hills we- saw busloads of german people out for j a holiday enjoying the lovely scen ery and excellent rhine wine ma ny of the men wore shorts these were made of leather and were held up by suspenders as the men walked passed you you could hear the leather squeak heidlehurg is a picturesque city on the nckkor river there is a wonderful castle which you can explore there this is a very pop lar tourist spot and there seemed l to be more americans than gcr- mans here we drove to frankfurt which is a very modern city this was hea vily bombed during world war ii and is now almost completely re built our four weeks were quickly- over and it was time to start home again we were happy to do so we had seen so much and packed and unpacked so many limes that we were quite ready to return home and think about it all we have many happy memories and our pictures will keep these mem ories alive
