mhm a few turn pictures taken we any b ante to have the entire branch measberahip we certainly weum like to lie ana enonsh to say thafn we wonm he able haft that not so some time we could or- ganixe fairly expensive propov itson and would need outside fia- anciiig however maybe if the ex ecutive kick it around foe a white along with the writer someone is bound to come up with a bright idea after all the executive are a fairly optimistic progressive ga thering the elected ex we hasten to add- tn case someone thinks we include our own honor ary position thats one thing we can say dur- the twelve years weve written this column our executives as a whole whether weve agreed with them or not have all been real op timists about the future and not i to see bui am row lab lm ad to so w heen nice hay ant enly war asnt aneet- atinas wen sorry we found your picture yet t well ran your handsome soon at wc set it so some rw members can see you i t i the provincial convention is al as and we hope to see a nf attend from this none 3here wfll be at least two there in lae persons of the none commander secretary and talking to tred johnson he fehjs us ne is g n and wetsow- art hornsey smbc from brampton as usual we would imagine both port credit and oakvibe will be represented and the district commander at least will be present from street vate gord mccatcheon tells us theres a good possibility of some attending from acton so all in all it should be quite a turnout the convention starts on august wh ill by the way we were amused to hear an attempt haade to prove by the financial statement that last year we started with a lot more m than we ended and that proved we lost money or it was mismanagement or something we would suggest to anyone who thinks that or who hasnt been in r organiza tion faster than the well meaning hut living in the past type of thinking we hasten to add this applies not only to the younger members but also to the first war vets who have served on the exec utive and who have shown an amazing ability to change with the li ii j travel notes 15 d av a i r excursion only 45400 return malton to london england 3 full particulars at r barber rifjov times and progress things could have been different if the branch had been in the con trol of a group who believe in pil ing tip surpluses of cash in the hank then all we would have needed was someone to invest the money in some worthless bond is sue or something and we would have had trouble on our hands the handling of public funds is a big job at any time and as we doat feel that theres anyone in our group capable of picking safe in vestments the next best things is to put said funds as they accumu late into the further comfort and expansion of our building as is be ing done and has been done by the branch executives 1 we learned the other day from mrs gordon cousens that she is goingto england for a holiday we wished her bon voyage on behalf of the branch most of whom had not only a great deal of respect for her husband but also a lot of ad miration personally we know we considered him one of our best friends and im sure like the pre sident was awfully glad that just before he moved from his old home prior to his death we had bad the opportunity to spend a pleasant evening with him discuss ing various aspects of legion af fairs both in branch and zone speaking personally we owe him a great deal he along with dutch mccartney and jim murphy being three of the main instigators of our taking an interest in legion and writing this column it hoped to have his portrait fin ed in the not too distant future he was one senior officer we know to whom that phrase officer and gentleman really applied a title mino millwork drop in and see where it went beautiful and comfortably ap pointed lounge room one of the finest in the country there the odd member who doesnt get in too often but we do suggest that they try and drop in and see it and also feel that cool cool air conditioned temperature certainly a valuable asset before making brash statements like the above any member should drop in and see just what has taken place in the past twelve years one of our pic tures of the week this week is j f dutch mccart ney a long time members and a real booster of branch 120 as as number of the new members dwtea is a past ttour years and past four wears he has not been too active of late as be has been under the weather fbr snme time however he is always na tap for any help he can give to the branch hope your health steadily improves and youre soon buck to your old self i recently had the pleasure of read ing once again an article that ap peared in he globe and mail a few nonths ago it showed the trend that the legion hao taken from the early days until the present and the great strides made particu larly in community work we re commend the article to anyone to read particularly anyone an we hope there are few who do not like to see the legion grow and become as large as it has this of course is very understandable particulary for anyone who has been a member in the days when there were less than a hundred members and everyone was on a first name basis however pro gress cannot be halted and each and every member oust keep up with the times or as our past pre sident rev dean anderson mc said at the 54 convention the le gion has but two courses either ifemnt renovations on the rosy theatre on mill street arendnduv- ed for completion some time this month it was reported by manager bill leslie earlier this week nothing has been overlooked in pioneers he studied it and soon became profic ient teaching his five brothers to play as well they were well known at the turn of the century as the dyer brothers orchestra mr dyer played the violin order was in charge of the committal service at huxleys cemetery pony kind owner provide big time for local kids one kindly man one small pony and 9 neigbtourhoodjgf small chil dren mixed together and what have yon with these ingredients what could you have but the happiest neighbourhood in georgetown last week the gentleman in ques tion acquired the pony in a busin ess deal- he called at his home on the way to housin the pony anof lefttt in his truck for a few min utes it didnt take long for the news to travel and taunediately the children of the neiglboornood jbe- gan knocking on the door could they please feed the pony the gentleman couldnt resist them so the pony was led to the park and the fun began the feeding waft the first step of course just the wedge next couldnt they polish it they were told they would have to have soft flannel to do that so in noth ing flat they were all back with a few more children- to polish the ball was really rolling by now and the next step was just a little ride so arrangements were made that the oldest youngest who is j thirteen be manager and the rides were organized a shelter was found for the pony nearby instead of the one a few miles out and temporarily he will give the young sters a thrill children rarely get in town financial arrangements were a little vague but apparently there was a slight charge amongst the children for they report the first days receipts of 34c were spent en tirely on sugar lumps and carrots it was quite a sight to see every child lined up for their ride with carrots at least two sticking out of their back jeans pocket so mothers if when you go to put your child to be and an arm or a leg was missing from the py jamas or if your vegetable brush was missing dont be angry they were only used for polishing the pony never has a pony been so rubbed fed or loved or never have children had such fun all thanks to a kind gentleman who put off the sale of the pony for awhile things were slightly blue around the jones household too and poor betsy was simp ly pining awayi then dad thought of the herald adlets a small ad hi the lost and pound colunmbtromht befc qr pppy back in a jiffy next time you stagnate and sit in the clubrooms thinking and living in the past resenting all change and progress we think that the reverend gentleman must have been a very active onlooker in his ottawa branch to make such a shrewd and obvious conclusion to the paths the legion might take ontario provincial com mand we are happy to say take the jirst view also and hope to see membership up at least 50 per cent by the end of the year in george town there is no real reason why our membership cannot add pos sibly another hundred to it in the next few months there are hun dreds of prospective members just waiting to join if someone makes them feel they are wanted and to any one who might scoff and say nonsense figures dont lie weve brought eight new members into the branch in the past few weeks with very little effort other than handing the people concerned membership forms you can do the same why not try it we think quite sincerely that that is a much more worthwhile project than sitting back criticizing the men that are trying and incident ally the ones who find time to drop in and provide the congenial com panionship that makes our legion georgetowns finest club i i i we had a shock recently when a pretty good old friend took sick on us and be lieve me he was misse particu larly in the dart room where he is one of the ack- nowledged ex- ranryis too well known by even the new
