retirement he is now in ottawa and has another brother judge ian macdanneu in toronto how about introduc ing us to your wealthy friends bill we had heard bill speak of long jim before but never had connected the two men last thursday night saw the regular monthly meeting of the branch president- garvin in the chair the meeting was quite a short one this time although there were quite a number of matters ta ken up reports of committees were given and the treasurerss re port- as well as the minutes of pre vious meetings a number of don ations were also given several lit tle items were brought up and a couple of matters pertaining to sports were given hals off to our good friend pat patterson chief oha referee for hiwonderful job handling public ity for last monday nights hockey in the arena for the kids pat cer tainly went all out getting tv and radio coverage for the night and deserves a great deal of credit be cause above all he never has to be asked to do a thing like that he just pitches in and does it often at a certain personal sacrifice of time which he could use in his own business or in his duties as oha prexie in case anyone does not know incidentally pat is one of swift packers chief executives and still finds time to operate his highly successful beef cattle farm near norval v the boys operating the little nhl did a great job last monday night and deserve a big hand for their efforts we now have a ttttfa matter to discuss which we wei refl the thoughts of our entire branch ap most that is it concerns guests personally nothing makes us nap- pier to see members have their friends in to show them just what a wonderfully wellrun place we have and the comfortable lounge cations we belong to we areproud est of our legion membership on the basis of the work they have accomplished in this community as well as the country as a whole as most readers know we inake it a point t try and bring asmahy h juenttal and prominent people into centact with branch 120 as pos sible we think these visifa are mutually beneficial as they see a little of what welare trying to accomplish and begin to under stand- that we run something oher ttyan highly successful beer hadk on their part we haye yet to meet anyone who has toured the place heard a little of our projects and seen it operate who did hot leave visibly impressed and to varying an ambassador of better relationships between our group and their own therefore it came to us as quite a surprfeeto find a man happily what council did objects wrter supply forotttoftown swase ajrequest for cost of supplying town water for a new imperial pil service station which is locating on the highway just east of town limits brought protest from cr fred harrison at the march 2qth council meeting v cr harrison said the station is beinglocated out of town to avoid georgetowns closing hour bylaw we shouldnt help someone like that was his opinion crs mcgilvray and sykes diss- greed saying that if water could be profitably sold the town should sehijt the station is locating there anyway- and whether we sell them water or not wont affect their de cision said cr mcgilvray unless we sell more water than we are at present our water rates will have to be raised again next year reminded reeve stan allen the reeve explained that the ymca camp is also interested in town water and that any cost of extending the water line would only one who does not think fr uivenb be paid entirely by these good policy to show pur place off on the odd occasion we can only decry this and urge to all mem bers that the definite legion po licy is to further understanding of our aims and problems by a closer integration with other people in our community this has been ex pounded time and again by both our dominion and provincial pres ident who have hammered away at the theme show people what you have that will sell the legion so we nope and trust that we will never nave occasion to mention a distasteful and personally we con sider it disgraceful remark ag ain each member of the legion should welcome guests when we have the oportunity of having them to any one person saying we dont want them we can only say the legion is no place for you and wed be better off without you we hasten to add the foregoing remarks are our own which we take full responsibility for but we feel they also reflect the thoughts of everyone in our branch 120 excepting the aforementioned one lest we forget our boys did real well in the zone dart tournament held a few weeks back in our local hall eddie just call me champ mcdermott won the singles and b team came out on top as did c team to a lesser extent they be ing runners up coop o cribbage boys won their af fair held two weeks ago saturday and will go on to represent our branch in north bay good luck boys and now how about the win ning teams of any group give us the names of their teams so that urc can publish them also why dont the teams get pictures taken for submission to the legion ary at present we have some ve ry active sports teams and would like to sec their pictures in our national magazine in fact if they wish they may give the pictures to us and well see they get person al attention of the news editor wonder why all the cars went to that bowling competition in dix- icwe think the wives might be wise to check up when it takes more cars than players to get to it next zone meeting will be on sunday may 26th in brampton and something special is planned by the host branch also they are hoping the branches will bring the colours for an unveiling ceremony more details later acton had a real weekend last with their anniversary ball on friday night a banquet on satur day evening and a church service on sunday guess we just cant take it any more but these branch affairs are coming too regular with two in the last two weekends the prov incial meeting three weeks ago gad another one coming up for he m wee e i introducing don burns former rcaf pilot and youngest of the local family of burns boys who operate the lo cal trucking business of that name don is married and among his hob bles plays ths piano herb telford 3 john street he is also married and served with the army in italy during the war herb hails from llstowel and just join ed our local branch still speaking of new members we like to see self confidence and at least one of them bis it not m lontayto one of them was njfty gord king and norm mcdonald have a big idea they figure that with the amount of sports activi ties going on wed be farther ah ead to buy a bus we might be at that but wonder what theyve got in mind maybe they figure they could run a taxi service to ss and provincial on the side wonder whats the matter with intelligence service up around the press line these days havent had any little newsy tidbits about my favourite newspaper copy in quite a while maybe hes finally tired from the public eye could e but we doubt it 1 it oh yes before we forget we have decided that this summer in recognition of his great servi- to legion notes as chief one time news subject we will let scot- ty write this column as most of you know he has a flare for writ ing among other flares that is and we look forward to reading his column while we arc away but before you make any real plans john we are also planning to cen sor it before it is printed jim murphy please note we oc casionally see in our travels ar ound the district some unusual en tertainment and we recently saw quite a good act that wed like to sec our entertainment- committee have some night it is put on by an older vet and is a parody of the character who can usually be found around clubs or legions and which all of us have seen ex amples at some time or other the comedian we have his name but cant recall it first explains he is going to represent that repreh ensible character who is out to get a free one by book or by crook first he showed the ordinary or as he called it garden variety who just joins the party or move in and hopes for the best- next was the scrounger type who always has some important business to discuss with one of a group then came the bale fellow well met type who spots the stranger and immediately uses the orthodox ap proach of didnt we meet at such and such a place and finally the hound dog type who waits un til some local b executives esls aulvir and just moves in knowing theyll buy sooner than chance embarrassment we took the liberty of giving the comedian murpns name and address add we hope some time we can hear him ghv jwordaoant describe the act its a terrific one especially for a veterans club he finishes the act by trying to peddle a ter- rtflcafljr rmge book wltttftmr im letters on the cover proclaiming the title scroungers i have known tart friday night alter the ac ton anniversary ball charlieami dot day invited afew of us up for coffee and while we were there 3 group of our local sport- arriianywaythey sfflttsffiitlrtaj users i hope were oot going to be fa ced with a new pumping system some day by extending the system said cr harrison mayor armstrong reminded the council that the town is selling wa ter to other outside users and that no precedent would be established in this case closing bylaws for gas stat ions were inaugurated at the re quest of operators said the may or no such bylaw has ever been passed without a majority pe tition i have proved to you three years ago that times have chan ged replied cr harrison himself a garage operator some of the original signers have moved away others have died an application by 50 per cent of the operators to rescind the bylaw was turned down at that time i said if a petition comes from over 50 per cent of the garagemen ill be the first to en dorse it said the mayor to date there has been no such petition the water committee was in structed to make a recommenda tion on the matter bernard cassell told council that he has been appointed the official spokesman for east georgetown ratepayers association and is del egated to bring any matters to the council which require their atten tion he asked about a supposed right- ofway between mclntyre and nor ton crescents and the property committee was asked to check on this of the act was heard to mutter as he beat out protestant boys if the better half hears of this itll
