the georgetown herald sixteen pages georgetown ont wednesday october 24th 1956 first section what council did plan board palls as council stalls with three council members ex pressing opposition to a section of the proposed zoning by law no de cision was made on adopting the by law- at mondays council meet ing the by law was presented to the council by planning board chair man edwin wilson who was ac compamed to the meeting bv all members of the board mr wilson said that no changes had been made in the bylaw since it was published in instalments re cently in the herald but pointed out certain major changes in the zoning map which the board deci ded at their meeting last week the controversial highway strip between edward street and rex way is now designated commercial a portion of the moore farm on main st n which fronts the high way has been changed from resid ential to industrial status and a service and storage section in the river drive district has been re zoned as residential a lengthy discussion period found reeve allen and cr mcgil vray outspoken in opposing a by law clause which would preclude residential building in land reser ved for industry the men were joined in a straw vote b cr hale in their opposition which apparen tly is the only stumbling block to unanimous passing of the b law by council both the reeve and cr mcgilv ray spoke at various times of the rights of the little man and of how unfair it would be to refuse permission for residential building on isolated small lots even though they are in industrial areas no matter what the zoning by law says there will be people who have objections said mr wilson explaining that a committee of ad justment will be set up to handle these if individual cases are con sidered before the by law becomes law georgetown will never have a zoning plan he said reeve allen explained that he wants to avoid as many future pro blems as possible by considering individuals first and named speci fie intances where he thought chan ges should be made if zoning is to be in small bits it won t be zoning replied mr wilson we ve studied the original plan drawn up by dr faludi revised it and this is our best suggestion taid board member bob mcmen emy i don t thing anyone on the planning board expected to be as ked to throw out the plan and ere ale a hodeg podge mayor armstrong said that he has been told by the dcpt of plan ning in toronto that they frown on residences in industrial areas the dept attitude seems to be he said that if exceptions are wanted whv do you want a by law we re hindering free enterprise if a man can t sell his property said cr mcgilvray i appreciate all the work the planning board has done but i can t see the by law in its present form council decided to turn the by law over to the town solicitor for an opinion on its legahtv mean while the major suggested that the planning board reconsider their submission in the light of the e enings discussion while each coun cillor gave it earnest consideration and prepare to make a decision at a future meeting intimating that his board would have no further suggestions to of fcr mr wilson expressed disap pointment at the turn the discus sion had taken we appreciate the thoughts of those who are opposed but neither we or anyone else has found a bylaw which can be locr accept able to every resident he said nick ferri to coach raider intermediates at a meeting friday night in the arena the veteran star of corc town raiders nick fern was ap pointed this years coach of the in termediate hockey club he sue ceeds scotty
