member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and jhe ontario division of the c w n a good news pool opens good news for youngsters and grownups too is contained in an announcement by the swimming pool committee that the new commun ity pool will officially open this sunday for the balance of the season the 50 000 fund drive is still tn progress and the committees work is not over yet for some 11 000 still remains to be found before the proiect is completed an earlier opening was delayed until the financial sttuation ironed itself out some 5 000 received since june has put the end of the road in sight and while the pool will not be turned over to the town council until more money is obtained the committee feels that it would not be proper to deprive children of healthful recreation any longer and that there will st ii be substantial contributions received to finish the campaign a daily charge for swimm ng will be made he will be missed unt mely death of one of georg to v j most civic m nded c t ze is last week leaves tlw town saddened and a void not easy to fill ted maccormack had given generously of his time and talents to a variety of public service at one time or another his activ ties ncluded membersh p on such groups as the public school board recreation commission cemetery board his organizing ability helped put over several victory loan campaigns in the war years he was an active supporter of sports interested in pol tics and serv ce clubs as well as merchants organizations law needs some revising this year in hopes that revenue will exceed op erating expense and help to pay off the deficit next year of course the pool will operate on a season s ticket basis it is hoped to keep the pool open continu ously from now on but this will depend on avail ability of qualified guards and assistants the committee is advertising for these and if enough guards are not available it may be possible to open only at certain times certainly now that the opening has been decided it is sure that the pool will be open as much as it can be the town owes a deep debt of gratitude to the dozens of men and women who have work ed hard on this wonderful proiect particularly should the lions club be thanked for giving the initial impetus and many of whose members continued to serve as committee members and active workers for the swimming pool he was widely known n fraternal circles and had held h gh office in masonic and odd fliiows lodges and his natural talent as an entertainer n i er ted from parents with a theatrical back ground enl vened many a social gathering both publ c and private people are remembered for what they leave behu d a man like ted maccormack will not soon be forgotten for he contributed more than one man s share to this community his death is a sad blow not only to h s family but to a wide c rele of fr ends social and personal mr and mrs vic bibcy park view blvd are spnding their holi day on a boat trip their attended a reception on ship board and weer taken on a tour of the new ocean liner action of the post office in halting distnbu tion of raffle tickes in the hospital house draw cannot be questioned in the light of current leg islation but makes one wonder if the law should not be changed intent of antigambling legislation is to keep citizens from being victimized by sharp operators who in the name of charity can use a raffle for personal gain in a broader sense the legislation is also designed to curb gambling in general al though there is considerable winking when ser vice clubs and other public groups are engaged 1 1 a bonaf de fund raising campaign could t not be possible for the government to exert control over raffles by requiring the promoters to furnish evidence that the proceeds will be used for the purpose advertised that a certain lim t n promotion expenses would not be exceeded and that no private person or organ ization would benefit from money received raffles could then receive the official sane tion which they enjoy in ireland for instance where the sweepstakes raise a considerable share of hospital upkeep n a legalized manner morristaylor wedding st pauls norval of gam bling which only a punst could confuse with the more vicious forms which can constitute a men ace to society in our mmd we can separate gambling which becomes an obsession or which can cause people to spend more money than they can of ford with that which fulfills a normal feeling to take a chance on winning something for nothing we have no use for such games as crown and anchor so often a feature of charitable af fairs where a person can lose dollars in a few minutes and against his better udgment spend pot pourri there are blueays this year in the queen street neighbourhood and we hope they will multiply yesterday a baby ay was hopping about our front lawn with mother squawking in a tree above urging him to test his wings either he fell out of the nest too soon or was just lazy for he would flutter only a few steps and when darkness fell he was still stumbling around we fear he ended victim of a cat for while we fen ded off danger for two hours in the form of a group of ne ghbourhood ybungsters one dog several cats and some motor cars we couldn t sit up all night even for a baby bluesy georgetown s quieter than usual this week hoi day closing of the smith and stone plant and the avro and orenda plants at malton means that a large percentage of residents are away on holi days if today tuesday is an example of the money which he cannot afford and didn t intend to too often this raises money in the name of charity from people who cannot afford such large donations by appealing to a gambling urga inherent in human nature a lucky draw raffle can hardly be likened to such a game we have yet to hear of a person who buys more than one or two raffle tickets on a car or a hospital house unless it is to make a larger don ation to a project they favour it is gambling of course but m such a mild form that the end us tifies the means and hurts no one week we don t envy those at summer cottages we hope they have warmer weather before vac ation ends a classic spotted
