wannaadav eentag june 13th 1956 thb oeorgetown herald the georgetown herald wednesday evening june 13th 1956 page 6 the georgetown herald serving the communities of georgetown glen williams norval l1mehouse hornby stewarttown ballinafad ashgrove terra con a walter c biehn publisher a nd editor staff garfield l mcghvray bob baskcrville leslie m clark dave hastings corey hernngton jr ken cowell mrs ailecn bradley authorized as second class mail post office dept ottawa member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and the ontario division of the c w n a subscription rate 3 00 a year single copies 8c each advertising rates quoted on application the herald is printed each wednesday in the office at 22 main st georgetown get in the swim in a last ditch stand to have the community swim mmg pool open in july members of the committee have called a public meeting next monday night in the arena rose room they particularly are interested in assembling a group of people who will act as canvassers for a sec ond fund campaign aimed at clearing off the 18 000 indebtedness which must be met before the pool can open and the 18 000 must be found or george town will be faced with an empty hole in the ground this summer instead of a swimming pool full of happy kds it is to be hoped that the four ratepayers organi zations active in the newer subdivisions will send strong representation to the meeting there are n an such residents who have made no contribution and in we need your help time was when we could take a sunday drive around town and write the social and personal column from the strange cars at different homes only a few years ago everyone knew etrone else in georgetown and there weren t man news stones that didn t circulate around to be overheard at one time or another by someone in the herald office that was when there were only half as many rest dents as now and when practically every ma i w is em ployed in a local business establishment georgetown is a radically different town not there are more people and to add to the con p exit es of reporting hundreds work in malton oakv lie and toronto and we don t bump into thes res dents like we do the locally employed and consequently we fact there are dozens of families who have come to town since the campaign last fall took place with a large proportion of the towns young people resid ent in the subdivisions there ts much that can be done with proper promotion to help make up the deficit there a public appeal last week resulted in a few more dollars and while it would be nice to think that all the money might come in unsolicited it is not human nat ure to give without a little push the canvas is there fore a necessity and many people must volunteer in order to cover the town the way it should be done it is hoped that a good attendance will take place at mondays meeting without canvassers there can be no canvas and without a canvas here can be no swimming pool thais the story as we get it don t hear their news like we want to i it is news when you have visitors from a d stance when you do some travelling yourself when your children have birthday parlies when some one m your fam ly is married when a bereavement occurs you win a sweepstakes prize your sor loins the army anything of interest to other people which you would like to have them know is what we want to print in the herald reporters are not mind readers and we have to hear the news somewhere sometime won t yuu help particularly you ntwer residents by giv ng the herald office a calf the herald belongs georgetown is in for a dusty summer and we will have to gnt our teeth and bear it never has there been so much construct or un derway at any one time the highway widening and resurfacing ij still only in its initial stages and it appears that it will be several months before the whole process is completed there has been so much excavating for curbing s cle walks water lines telephone and sewers that there is scarcely a grain of earth which has not been moved several times in the process road grading is underway in new subd s oih laying of natural gas lines will take place n every area in the king street district a large storm ewi r is being installed and soon the maple ave link and bridge will be under construction while town officials are planning oiling where er poss ble there are large expanses where only calcium treatment will be possible there is bound to be dust and we will have o cons der it as one of the necessary appendages to progress pot pourri main street continues to see some changes cos ing of the modern meat market leaves a vacant slore on the street for the first time in years another store we hear is contemplating closing down in the next month or two when mcgowan s specialty snop closed o few months ago united suburban gas rented the building for an office and showroom soon a fam ihar location on main street s will be vacated when the hydro office moves to the new building beside the post office driving home from erin sunday we took the beautiful route along the 9th line which skirts hickory falls and winds through a viliey past mr vaughans fallbrook farm and into glen williams georgetowner s are lucky they only have to travel a few miles to enoy some of the grandest scenery in the world if you lavent done so take your next pleasure drive into the glen terra cotta district if any faces are missing from the council tarle in the future maybe we can look for them in cinemascop for the first time to our knowledge a town coun cil is going to be in the movies cooperating with delrex developments they are going before the cam eras tomorrow as part of an advertising movie being made by the company spring has missed us this year and the sudden transposition to summer weath er has some people complaining about the heat guess its human nature and if we didn t have the weill er to talk about it would be a dull world the new face you see behind the post office wicket belongs to miss jean hancock glen williams ex georgetown er riley brethour continues to be in the news the brethour and morris partner appeared at least wice on tv in connection
