summer cottage and 2 000 m cash whew if you have watched the show you will know that there is a tv con lestant also identifying tunes when the long distance call is put thru to the person whose card is picked from a sort of raffle box as soon as the call is nut through the music stops and the person on the other end of the long distance call must identify the number is being played while the call is beine made do i make myself clear however if the long distance contestant misses out on the tunc identification he or she is en tilled to hilf of what the actual tv contestant has already won so mr and mrs goldman will receive some nice prizes anyway such as 400 m cash an flna sewing machine and shirt and watch bands for mr gold man in order to be eligible for the contest mrs goldman had filled in an elna sewing machine card at a toronto store and sent it into the pro fram 0 had a phone call from ann hickey last week to say that for the past two months now a flock of about 60 evening gros beaks have made their headquarters in a manitoba maple just outside her window in the mackenzie apartments on queen street they have been feeding on the maple keys and now that there is nothing left but the lit tie string like bits the birds have des erted their feeding ground in addi tion to the maple seeds the people who live in the apartments have en touraged them to stay by feeding them and they certainly were a lovely sight when fccdui ann tells me jou could hardly sc the tree for the birds she also savs that she not iced three distinct shades of plumage on the birds there were the bright yellow ones and the grayish black with white and the brownish with white all had the large beaks so there was no mistaking they were grosbeaks c now that the grosbeaks have dis appeared she tells me the bronze crackles are abroad on queen street this is a variety of blackbird which has beautiful multicoloured plumage when the sun shines on their ebony feathers this was something new to me 1 had always thought black birds were all the same 0 ive just come back from slipping over to my neighbours mrs cecil davidson s on ai bert street to see her nerfcctly beautiful collection of african violets in bloom she has thirty varieties in bloom shading down from the deep est purple to a creamy white there are reels blues pinks some of the single variety and quite a few doub les i must say my viewing was more than a little tinged with envy i am one of the people who try hard read all the hints about raising them i can find but haven t too much luck getting them to bloom mrs davidson gave me a baby plant of the variety i admired the most called a georgia peach its a single bloom of a rich deep pink i felt something like the girl in a rec ent newspaper article i read who felt that she should be shielding the plant well when carrying it home from her green thumb neighbour she her self had a purple thumb and she did not want the plant to see who was carrjing it for fear it would wilt be fore it even arrived in her home but i got some good hints from mrs davidson or lois as most of us know her i m going to trj them out on mj new little plant and sec if i can t get a galaxy of bloom first of all violet lovers she never uses anything bigger than a 3 pot the are watered about every third da with rather warm water here i make m mistake i believe for lois showed me her hospital uhcer she has placed two or three ra thcr sickly plants aside for special care thcv arc for the most part vie tims of over watering any they look just like mine and hark vou lois waters her iolcts from the top oh cs and most important the original potting soil lois recommends that you buy the mixture made up espec lally for african violets one more admonition do not place them in a draft 1 mentioned that lois had thiry varieties in bloom but she also has an additional 25 varieties just coming mto blossom she raises most of her plants from leaves given to her bv friends and she tells me that this b the way ts a very favourable time for rooting a leaf she just starts it in water and when the roots are for med transplants it then hcres a good hint for economy when the little plants arc formed about the base of the stem if the parent leaf is still vrgorous cut it off and it can be rooted again if vou wish if ou know a little about african violets you will have noticed that some of the names end with girl lois showed me why this distinction is made the leaves of the plants so named arc deep notched and have a pure white centre her rarest plant at the moment is a double pink 0 it takes a lot op care to raise an african violet plant from a leaf rooting and even more from seed but if jou do suc ceed in getting a lot of bloom i don t think there a an thing prettier and raising them from leaves the way lois does have another nice advantage she can point to certain planti and say suchandauch a friend gave mo that leaf it could almost be called a friendship garden couldn t it
