last week favoured constructing a side walk along guelph st in front of the georgeview shopping plaza the sidewalk first discussed in 1952 has never been built and pe destrians have been using a paved area which was installed by fletcher construction when they built the stores in the area this pavement extends past the property line and was illegally installed according to council there have been complaints from residents in the district about the dangers of cars entering the area at any spot last fall council decided to erect guard rails and provide separate store entrances at last week s meet ing cr walter gray who is chair man of roads said there has been a tremendous lot of opposition to such guard rails and his committee sug gests the sidewalk as an alternative at present he said there is no line of demarcation between town and private property and should there be an accident it would be difficult to assess liability a sidewalk would warn motorists to be careful in en tering the area and would fix respon sibiuty in case of accident he said cr irwin noble who with deputy reeve sargent and cr mcgilvray op posed the sidewalk said he could see no advantage particularly in the win ter months when cars would be driving over it anyway opponents of the guard rail opined that cars would park on both sides of the rail and confuse the situation even more than at present reeve stan allen said it is rldicu lous to say a sidewalk is not needed when one has already been construct ed on other parts of the highway where there are no stores the deputy reeve reporting for the planning committee which had been asked to study a request by halton co operative supplies to purchase a strip of property in the hats behind their building recommended that the land not be sold at the suggested 100 price if the coop is interested in paying a higher price he suggested that a neutral party assess its value reeve allen and cr mcgilvray were the only councillors who favoured the sale mr mcgilvray said that price should not enter into the picture too much for other portions of the land originally given to the town for a parksite had been sold at various times for less than 100 and he did not see holding up the coop in their plans for expansion the town solicitor recommended that the town take no action to close an unopened portion of dufferin st requested recently by solicitor mau rico manderson acting for a client the road may be closed by the hewson estate owners of the property he said and he suggests that as the estate is the interested party they initiate the action a complicated picture was present ed by harry verhey in his request for permission to place a house on property owned by him behind moun talnview road mr verhey has built his own house at the rear of a lot which has a 50 foot road frontage then angles in an lshape behind credit valley bottl ing works he has installed his own hydro and water line and uses his own roadway the second house would have no access other than this private road and water lines would have to be extended from the verhey lines council left it with the building inspector to see if the new house would be permissible under the build ing by law two gentlemen interested in sub dividing the ernie armstrong farm which adjoins the town limits at the old papermill asked questions about stepuptoan now a
