gojqetown fire department one ol the mot efficient and certainly one of the mov nece- tary public bodiet in town and diitrcf their work hat become doubly valuable tince a towmhip fire area wat formed and iheie volunteer who serve without pay now stand ready to protect life and property over a wide va perhaps the best way we can all be members of the brigade n to pay attention to fire prevention mea sures and give firemen less work to do at this time of year particularly it is important to have chimneys and furnaces cleaned to comign to the longhair not so long one of our favourite programs on tv is ed mur rows person to person v here we have watched such diverse personalities as expresident and mrs truman dick powell and june altyson former olympic champ jesse owens and tv personality steve allen show us through their homes and chat with mr murrow we particularly liked leonard bernstein who ap peered on a recent friday night because it was the first time wo had heard someone who knows what he is talking about say something dear to our heart that clatttcal music and operas do not need to be aged for half a century or so before they become art or that bz2 is a form of music at which noses should be turned up mr bernstein is one of the most brilliant of mod what we try to do in the rush of reporting the weekly news budget last week and handling the substantial number of ad vartisements which a 16 page paper contains we had no opportunity to mention that it was national weekly newspaper week not that we lost any sleep about it for we believe readers would rather have an extra column of readable local news in place of some editorial blah about the influence of weekly papers or what a grand guy your editor is or what wonderful results advertisers get we do thank imperial oil limited for a nice trib ute in the form of a paid advertisement which you wtll have read by now the company spent a consid erable sum of money to give us this pat on the back kind words are always acceptable and when someone pays for space to say them then its more than even an optimistic editor could hope for too often editors particularly weekly ones be come embued with the idea that they are moulders of public policy destined to crusade for evory public good denounce everything harmful be a leading in- flence in their community pot pourri garbage any accumulation of rubbish in basements arvd garages and to use care and common sense when ttart ng grass and leaf fires the latter can be particularly dangerous and it is wise to start burning leaves only when you are going to be home long onough for the fire to burn out it is startling to see statistics released by the onta no fire marshal s office which stows canada in the lead in fire losses in statistics based on 1952 fire losses and populations it is evident from the figures that we hold an unenviable position m the sue of our fire loss don give fire a place to start is the theme of the 1955 hre prevention week orn day musicians not only does tie write symphony music but he has directed some of the best symphony orchestras jn the states questioned by mr murrow he said flatly that music in some of the presentday musical comedies particularly tttote written by rod- gjrs and hammerstcin is on a par with anything that the metropolitan opera presents and he paid tribute also to aiz as a recognized phaso of music and in fact played a few bars of boogie woogie on his piano to prove it mr bernttem did much to dispel the popular the ory that a classical musician must look think or talk differently ho looked as ho should like an ordm ary man extremely gifted in his chosen profession who has a high regard for music in all its forms of eitprcs si on we are much more humble than that we try our best to report all the news possible during the week to help such things as the community swimming pool and the hospital campaign raise their funds and to provide an attractive setting for the advertisements which make the other possible we like to think of ourselves as a businessman who makes an adequate living by doing a ob he likes who is no better or worse than the average george- towner who earns his livelihood in industry or merch andising and we heartily resent the constant referen cos which even some other weekly editors foster to grass roots philosophers and backbone of the commun ity we believe that a weekly newspaper has an im portant part to play in a community though no more so than a good department store or a grocery or a drug store we try our best each week becauso wo like our job and try constantly to improve our product if for no other reason than knowing that if we don t do a good job someone else will come along who will chatting with mrs gordon pass last week when she called from preston to tell us of the wedding anni versary of her parents mr and mrs william bulltvant we learned that her son peter was e member of the high school rugby team which played a game in town with the local high school last week mr end mrs pass have an older son david who is in the second year business administration course at the university of western ontario at london this year when mr end mrs danny mossop were on their honeymoon they stopped in hanover to have dinner in a restaurant operated by mr and mrs bill hazelwood they will be remembered here as
