broomhead the herald la printed each wednesday in the ofilce on main street georgetown authorized as second class majl post office dept ottawa member of the canadian weekly newspapers association and the ontario division of the cwnjv highway safety suggestion a gnm rise in thenumbei of traific ac cidents and deaths in ontario is noted and there is indication that the total for the year will exceed last years record high of 1010 this in spite of an intensive campaign by the highways department to make drivers more safety conscious the provincial government is said to be considering a watch yourneighbor campaign that would make every driver a highway vigi we the plan which is understood to be gain ing favour is this every driver would be urg ed to report by licence number any car he notices flagrantly violating traffic rules to facilitate reporting drivers might be given a sure cure closely allied to the traffic problem is- the large incidence of accidents where drinking is involved it has never been definitely established and never will be just how much blame can be laid on liquor or how much a man can drink before he can be considered an unsafe driver blood tests walking a straight line and numerous other methods are not fool proof and there is much confusion in the le gal method of establishing whether a man is drunk and yet it would be so simple to put a proper law xm the statute books which would have teeth and which could be enforced merely this a law which says it is llle gal to be in control of a vehicle when a man has oeen drinking intoxicants quantity is not important one sip or a bottle would make no difference that law would have some teeth in it a hall of fame the ideal of a scholastic hall of fame in the georgetown high school should have been adopted long ago it is planned to have pictures of award- winning students with a notation of their achievements hung in a prominent place m the school to serve the double purpose of rec ogmzmg the students and of encouraging others to strive to reach scholastic heights along with their annual permits a book of stamped postcards addressed to queens park when they see an act of reckless driving all they would have to do would be write down the licence number check off the offence and drop the card m the mail these reports would form the basis for courteous warning letters they would not be used as information for laying charges those who favour the plan think it would act as a sharp deterrent to careless driving and that it would also provide valuable aid to the police if the same driver was reported oftem by different people the police in his locality would know that he should be watched and there would be no more proof needed than a policeman s word that he smelled in toxicants or if loopholes still existed a blood test it would not mean that every drinking driver would be picked up any more than at present every person exceeding the speed hm it is stopped and fined no law can be abso lutely enforced and in fact should not be but it would give police some backing which is all too often lacking in our present lows and most important it would reduce the number of accidents where drinking is in volved most of us are law abiding indivi duals who scare easily if the law is cleancut we don t go out of our way to risk getting caught a man who feared a drunk driving conviction would make sure that his car was driven by a nondrinking friend or he would take a taxi and everyone who did this would be making a great contribution to cutting the accident rate sometimes we are too prone to over emphasize athletics in the school program to the exclusion of the main purpose of educa tion not that sports should not have a prom inent place too for they play their part in shaping character we congratulate the members of the staff who sponsored- the idea and suggest that other schools adopt it also balunapad college student preaches at sunday
