dresden ot she cwna the big fairs coming directors of esquesing agricultural soc lety are counting on the law of- averages to come to the rescue and produce a good day on october 3rd for the 107th annual show in georgetown if good weather prevails the park should see a real record crowd for the earlier date these past few years has produced heat which has kept many people away after all there needs to be that frosty nip in the air for a fair to be a real success and this year most sat urdays m september have been fraught with misfortune- so we are hound to have some good ones last week acton and fergus car ried on under almost impossible clouded skies welcome triangle 7 we were up bright and early sunday morning to be a guest at the official cut over to the new dial phone system it was quite a struggle to give up that sunday morning sleepin but after all history was being made in georgetown and besides there was the lure of bacon and eggs at the mcgibbon house after the show w e rose at six shaved leisurely slightly contemptuous of the rest of the sleeping household had a small bite to eat just in case breakfast was delayed then meandered downtown keeping a watchful eye on the wristwatch so we wouldn t arrive too early not being sure which office the old or the new would provide the best reporting we parked halfway in between and joined dis trict manager walter misener who was hur rying to the old office en route mr misener pot pourri digging in the garden last week bob uane union street found an interesting o d com when shined up it proved to be a 2c piece minted in the united states in 1 865 another souvenir of past days was found by thomas l lyons when he was dismantling part of an old building which once was a vet erinary office on his property on edith street in a partition mr lyons found an election card for john waldie liberal candidate in the 1688 election miss mabel chave telling us that the phone girls appreciated the tribute paid in an editorial last week wants us to pass on the thanks of tpe staff for public coopera tion during the changeover period in spite of all the interruptions in service miss chave says that never once did any customer lose their temper and sound off to the staff i guess they said plenty to others but they certainly made it more pleasant around the phone of fice by not complaining is how she sums it up more oddities in the vegetable world include a terrific tomato plant which grew from a random seed in jim doherty s garden the plant sprung up in the middle of a flower and their grandstand show and gate receipts were heavy losers this in turn should help swell the georgetown crowd for many people who might have attended these will now come here for their fair outing as usual some changes have been made for the better at the fair with revisions of en try requirements in several sections some new features added and the best of the old retain ed there is promise of the best midway in years and after all this is an important part of any fair the cries of the barkers and the shrill of the caliope are just as much part of the show as the horse races the stock and the articles in the hall told us that most of the guests were in the new plant so we retraced our steps hurrying slightly for there was now less than five min utes to go this is one time we can t be accused of being late we thought smugly consulting the wristwatch which registered 6 57 as we moun ted the steps theirsuddenly we bear a chckeiyclick click just as an emerging bell official said well there you are boys georgetown s on the dial system but every story has its bright side mayor armstrong was there at a quarter to seven and missed the big moment entirely when he turned to talk to someone just as the switches were pulled so we can t feel too badly about it all and those bacon and eggs were good garden and ended up being about 7 feet tali witlnr 1 3 foot spread one basket was pick ed off the plant and this week another basket was to be picked with dozens of small green tomatoes left on the vine harold gilmer re ports a mammoth watermelon which tipped the scales at 28 pounds when it was weighed harold planted seeds from a melon purchased for eating last year j e peterkin whose wife is a sister of mrs thomas faram of town is busy building a new home in the orr sub division and plans to move out from toronto later this fall his new house is located on the extension of market street mr and mrs tom hewson are moving to their new home iit the same subdivision which faces maple avenue there will still be a hewson in his former main street home though no relation george hewson new lawyer in town has bought this and his wife and fam lly will be moving in the first of the month haltons new endure ever faithful ever sure or mans life nd worship tbeme of sunday sermon t d o a mans life and his wor ship was the tubject of rev john mr smiths sermon on sunday morn ing at st johns united church following those of a mans life and his work and a mans life and bis play and as these show ed how man must work to live rightly in tfafitworld and should play to balance his life and renew his body mind and spirit so also do we find that these do not complete a mans life but that worship is another inherent and vital part of his being mr smith used john 423 and 24 to show what jesui had to say about worship true worship as he talked with the samaritan woman at jac obs well but the hour cometh and now is when the true worship pers shall worship the father in spirit and in truth for the father seeketh such to worship him god is a spirit and they that worship him must worship hun in spirit and in truth even the woman of samaria knew about worship and that it was part of her life she was ready tqf talk about it and even to seek to learn more about it mr smith stressed the fact that our presence in church meant we had come to worship and that across canada and america there were thousands of churches where others were doing the same and that the world over there were churches chapels temples shrines synagogues erected to help man give expression to the need of his nature to outpour his worship true in some cases his worship might not be of the highest kind or character it could be even outside of any church or temple it could be that man was worshipping himself and giving all his vitality to try and satisfy his ego nothing for others even in his work or play nothing in worship to god for all the bene fits of his life here and man can choose where he gwes hisnworship and what a serious choice ft is be cause what a man worshipsis what he really is what he is always growing towards and very largely determines what he contributes to his own life to the life of the world and to god s universe mr smith affirmed that our pres ence in a christian church meant that we had come to worship the christian god that that was what the church had been erected for and dedicated to that that was what he was there for that any rites or ordinances we have were symbols to that end the true worship of the christian god our creator sustainei the god of pow cr love and mtrcy yet of wisdom and judgment for all his people if our worship is true we will have an awareness of god in all our life our work play and worship if all our thoughts and actions are not go verned and directed by that worship we are losing out we are not hav ing the abundant life christ came that we might have and if we feel that god is not su ipreme in our life and worship and we are in earnest about our way of living we will be ready to seek his forgiveness and his presence and power to cone closer to come close we need to submit our will to his will to his plan and pur pose for us let us remember the words of isaiah they that wait on the lord shall renew their strength they shall mount up with wings as eagles they shall run and not be weary and they shall walk and not faint this last probably our besj because when we come to pass through the valley of the shadow as we must we will not be seeking to mount up on wings nor even run but be content to walk as the psalmist said remembering god s promise they shall walk and not faint the choirs anthem was the king of love my shepherd is mrs wrigglesworth and mrs bishop sang the holy city auxiioar1 at niagara a busload of
