abitlbi power and paper company limited a nbrval native william bird was the subject of a nice story at the time of his retire ment from the company by permission of the editor of abitibi the story is reprinted be low as well as a picture of mr and mrs bird which appeared wjth it mr bird has two brothers thom as bird who moved to town from the farm this year and lives in the tyd nixon house on maple avenue and john bird sr of stewarttown william bird steam plant superin tendent retired oct 1 after giving almost 25 years service to manitoba paper company but unfortunately four months short of the time re quired to qualify for membership in the quarter century club bill was born in tforval ont september 6th 1880 and received his early education there later at- tndmk guelpn kni ulturul col lege where he became rinterestid in the art of making cholese on leaving college he worked at this trade a couple of yeurs then mig rated to sault ste marie where he spent the winter of 18981899 in the woods camps of spanish river in 1902 he landed back in toronto with t eaton company in their steam plant in 1903 he met miss reta peterson in toronto and they were married the following year but the course of true love did not exactly run smooth for just two weeks after their marriage t eaton company sent bill out to winnipeg on the construction of a steam plant to operate their new store then in course of erection in 1905 he re turned to toronto and brought mrs bird to winnipeg first living on margrave street in what was known as the eaton block until they pur chased their first small home in elmwood then a suburb of winni peg bill remained with eatons until 1917 and then went with the ogilvie flour mills until 1927 when mani toba paper company was advertis ing for a steam engineer and he came to pine falls s shift engin eer although he wrote to mrs bird in winnipeg instructing her you stay and keep the children there im not going to live in this mud- hole bill stayed on in pine falls and thinks there is no place like it in 1932 he was promoted to steam plant superintendent in 1928 when the late c c ir vine as endeavouring to interest employees in first aid training and lidding thc going pretty difficult bill bird in his usual quiet offhand way came forward and offered his experience and services as instruc tor he not only took hold of the work and got it going but has main tained keen interest in it through his efforts the pine falls first aid team in 1945 captured the taylor cup and the following year obtain ed the waugh shield highest indus trial award for first aid work in manitoba mr bird intends to cany on first aid classes an1 will also act as in structor for the st john ambulance ssociation in the territory from pine falls to lac du bonnet as he is a keen fisherman duck hun ter gardener and has now added to his list of hobbies motoring having purchased a fine new car this summer we forsee no lone ly moments for bill mr and mrs bird have purchased their own home on the rock just back of the mill and the community rejoices that neighbours will be able to drop in of an evening as usual for a game of crib and a friendly chat they have friday even ing of last week despite the heavy storm which made motoring very treacherous to say the least a good ly number of enthusiastic plowmen were in attendance from three of the four townships president v e mcarthur was in charge of the meeting mr l l skuce public school inspector for halton was the guest speaker and as usual deligh ted his audience with his lnterest- ng address mr skuce on request gave an illustrated address on his recent trip to europe which inclu de visits to france italy switzer land germany holland england and ireland those in attendance felt more than compensated
