1516 standing less than six feet ourselves we crept around among toweling scottish athletes like ah apologetic mantis and watched them putting the skpt throwing hararaerspnd running like wild meri around the quartermile race track we felt much better while hatching the lassies in the highland dancing forvbey at least resembled the traditional scotland of song and story but our tranquility of spirit seldom lasted for veiloiig at a time fona simple side glance would catch another strapping hielander tossing around the better part of a telephone pole as easily as we would balance a match front bur pointof view the highland games were a terrifying success i game8 hjatory the toronto high land games were inaugurated in 1950 wirh the toronto scottish and the 48th highlanders regiments as a nuc leus it was de cided that the sanies le dedicat ed to establishing and retaining true scottish traditions and culture in the city of toronto and no less than 17 scottish societies stepped in to boost the event this year under the chairman ship of ijr lain mackay the annual event got under way with a military tattoo on friday evening utuig 15 when 21 bands took part with trumpets bugles pipes and drums rolling out a thundering echo of scottish pageantry before 10000 spectators in the gigantic cnk grandstand on saturday afternoon the games were officially opened by major- general howard graham cbe dso eix and the fun began mr john cobb of the toronto police ajhletic association super- vised the sporting eventswhich were run simultaneously like a massive fivering circus the quartermile track fronting the grandstand seem ed constantly alive as race followed race the sixty and hundredyard dash races or girls the ojiemjle relay and the onemile grind for men were some of the events we caught over in the centre plot the hih jump wis hotly contested and still further the ile vault ami the shi were pluytd to a winner ii our memory serves the win ners in the ilnjve events were weii 1 lohltiiis 60 yards tiny tniillorin uk yards messrs willnr harding cassis and wil son mile reli selwyn jones the mill iuil lo the fivemile liriv anderson hih jump kddie hrtiti l- vault jnil stan raike t lu- i oouinl hot l qiber tossing- of all the events we witnessed at the highland games however the most uniquely scottish sport was tossing the caber to us the caber itself was a mansized chunk of telephone pole weighing 150 pounds but when bill rutherford tossed it up and over for its required spin in the air throwing a totalqf40 feet 9 inches from the chalk line to win the corby trophy we decided then and there that if rutherford wished to call it a caber hed get no argument from us caber tossing is quite a caper and we were satis fied to stand well back the two scottish regiments met in their yearly tugofwar for the okeefes trophy and this time the toronto scottish pulled the de fending 48th highlanders off their feet hamiltongames remember the dates friday and saturday june 29 and 30th when the annual hamilton scottish gathering takes place at the civic stadium held by the scottish so- cieties and clans of hamilton district and the argyll and sutherland highlanders of canada this 5th hamilton garter ing is being presented under the distinguished patronage of their excellencies the governor general and viscountess alexander and includes of course a military tattoo with massed pipe and brass bands highland dancing competitions and track and field events hoot mon when they drag out those telephone poles run for cover specially preporod by o
