canadian weekly newspapers associations and thd ontario quebec division of the cwjna is- r the editors corner an alarming situation not until monday 8 council meeting did we rfealize the serfcruspess of the present water shortage which can be alleviated only by heavy rains plus the coopera tion of every citizen in not wasting one drop of this precious fluid which we at times take for granted as being of limitless quantity we have i on the word of the town foreman who is the man most acquainted with the situation that there is even danger that enough watereannot be supplied to keep lodal industry operat ing unless consumption savings are made most geara getown people have been aware that the silvercreek reservoir has been depleted for the past few years due to clearing of land and the drying up of streams which formerly fed the reservoir up to now an auxiliary supply has been available back of james street from which water is pumped to the upper reservoir when it is needed and it is this supplywhich is now letting the town down for some reason it is just not producing sufficient quantities and after two or three hours of pumping there is nothing left until another day also according to the water chairman arthur herbert the water which is being pumped from this source is scarcely fit for human consumption an earnest plea is made to every housewife and to each businessman to use just as little water as pos sible until the new system is in operation when there will be water to spare council is instructing the en gineer to speed the work on the new pumphouse so that it will get going just as soon as possible for not only must citizens be inconvenienced by the shortage but is costing dollars to the taxpayers as the arena cannot be opened until more water is available for the ice system and outside rentals must be turned down until that time pot pourr1 poppy day this year will be on november 5th the saturday previous to remembrance day it is a temptation to drive fast on georgetowns new streets after so many months of bumps but motorists are asked to use caution particularly on busy streets where children play it would bea tragedy if a child were crip pled because our roads have been improved mr and mrs lloyd davison have moved from their farm near milton back to the glen williams district where mr davjson has purchased the farm formerly owned by the inglis brothers an industrial property ad vertised recently in the financial post was almost cer tainly the lower paper mill although the actual name was not used by the advertiser it will be a grand thing for georgetown when someone buys this building and puts itinto operation again and still the twins arrive at the herald this week we have a rarity twin cabbages grown by reg williams of the glen eleanor stark also tells us that she has twin calves which is about the onlyitem that has never appeared in the herald window fred mcnally brought us some husky specimens of raspberries which he picked in his garden on monday hydro was off for two hours sunday afternoon while some repairs were being made a week ago tuesday night a 4hour interruption was caused during an electrical storm when trouble occur red on the 26000 line between toronto and george town in case there is a hydro shortage this winter again householders would do well to stock up on can dles and oil lamps for these items are always scarce when the time comes the georgetown bakery changed hands on monday the prips brothers selling out to two hamilton men a perfect sunday after noon for a drive and this time we took the speyside road drove for a few miles on the miltonacton high way which is being extensively improved cut back to limehouse through to the highway and over the mountain at hickory falls and back to town the aut umn colouring was at its height and we wondered how many realize that one could go to many distant parts and never see anything which was more impressive than the halton scenery a ratepayers organization next thursdays oct 1 3th public meeting in the legion hall will have an important bearing on whe ther georgetown is to have a ratepayers organization or whether it will join other worthwhile projects on the aerap heap it is a particularly difficult thing to arouse general interest in municipal affairs except at times when ettehaa controversy occurs even at these times to jb many people who will express their opinions jfjr1n streetcorner discussions but wjio will gv farther than that it it there- it jirhft rafcae an tnevae tw business and there is no taxpayer who should not for each is astockholder in a corporation which has one and a half million dollars in assets to attend the meet ing if they wish to see a ratepayers organization form- it must be kept in mind too that such an organi zation should not be purely a protest group always ready to jump on council when they make decisions with which members are hot in agreement construe- tive criticism can be valuable to any town counciland a conservative society of ratepayers can perform a val- uable service to themselves and to council by offering their considered opmiqji on matters ok public interest the idea qf the ofganizatjpn shoiild be to acquaint citi zens with details they should knowaborjt how town busmcssis conducted in other words a properly or ganized group could study municipal affairs in similar fashion to courses offered in universities and in some city high schools whaltare the qualifications for a councillor who can vote on a money bylaw how do georgetowns educational expenses compare with those of other towns how will equalized assessment affect local properties should we consider a jointly- owned garbage disposal system with neighbouring towns these and similar questions can provide useful information for citizens and perhaps teach us all better to use our brains in acquiring useful information which can make us better citizens riga 10 -r- an ad in the heralds new advertisement column will bring results dont iake our vordfor it ask one of our sat 1sfied customers for instance mrs jean lockhurst recently had a pay envelope containing a considerable quantity of money returned wilfrid bird has been hav ing wonderful results selling wood there have been several replies to an advertisement for a housekeeper frank tighe sold his 1949 meteor ernie curry sold 1 00 new hampshire pullets and so it goes not that we guarantee results from every 50c advertisement twit on the average we are proud of the selling record performed by the herald small advertisements and we want all our readers to know what they can do in case youre wondering the rates are low there is a minimum charge of 50c for one insertion and up to 25 words are allowed longer ads are char ged at 2c a word if you wish an ad more than once it is billed at half price for each subsequent insertion the georgetown herald ofrke8 telephone res 346j 1- directory db j burns mxlntf xray cental surgeon
