recreational couh- cil we do not expect that mountains will be moved at this meeting or that the hall will be crowded to over flowing the grc does not anticipate this welcome as both would be it is hoped however that a suffic iently large group of interested citizens will be there and by their interest show that there is a measure of support for the idea of a recreational council and a re creational director to justify further work and a contin uance of activities it is hoped also that some of those who attend may be willing to join the group as active members to replace those who for one reason or an other are not able to do as much as formerly and to add new blood and new ideas it would be a fine thing if some ladies were added to the council for absence of activitiesfor girls and young ladies has been a weak point in the attempt to carry on a recreational program the new board of education the new board of education which had its first meeting last wednesday has a full agenda to deal with besides familiarizing itself with routine de tails of public and high schools there are several topical questions to discuss and plans both immediate and longrange to make the controversial question of the high school area is still to the fore in high school mat ters and the board will have to decide whether it is best to keep clear of the area or to join it on a three- school basis if joined on a threeschool setup it must not blind itself or the taxpayers to the tact that the central school idea hjis been completely abandoned by its exponents overcrowding at the public school is another real problem not only must some steps be v taken this year to provide for temporary relief for the next term but planning for the future must also be in- augurated for at the present rate of growth of george town each succeeding year will see too many grade i pupils for one teacher to handle and each year will see the problem increased by one grade so that the hiring of one new teacher will see the problem increased by one grade so that the hiring of one new teacher will give relief for only a year or two at the most the editor is in a rather unique position this year of being not only a reporter and an editorial writer but of also being a member of the hew board and in fact its chairman while we have ncvintention of trying to superimpose our views on the public this column will still be used to discuss public matters as we see them and occasional editorial comment will be made on these educational questions which are of importance to everyone potpourri thanks to clarence kennedy who noticed in last weeks editorial that we had never tasted margarine we were presented with a sample which was tested at the meal table as it is not proper to compare compet ing products our findings will be private and each householder can make his own decisions on the com parative quality it seems to me by joe blow makes a good addition to the herald the young man who suggested this column and submitted several sam ples has a lot of good ideas and an original way of presenting them and we predict it will be a popular feature of future heralds for the present he wishes to remain anonymous have you noted the nihw lum inous showcard paint along main street silvers brills and eatons order office are three which are using it in bright red on window and store displays it seemed more like may than january on sunday with balmy breezes blowing and water running freely in ditches and creeks this years calendars are the most attractive yet have you seen the limited distri bution copy of the murfin sheet metal works its really sumpin last weeks showing of gentle mans agreement at the roxy sets a new high in theatrical presentation it is hard to understand how the cowboy pictures and class bs can pack the house while a really fine picture with something important to ay gets only a fair attendance the skating follies sponsored next week by the girls pipe band is the most ambitious ever sponsored locally the girls are going to a lot of trouble to decorate the arena the ice will be painted green and special lighting effects will add to the beauty of the performance perhaps its just as well that the american tax department is taking such a large chunk of the two million dollars which jack benny received when his radio show was purchased by one of the networks the tired old com edian will now be receiving something closer to what he is wortll mmtmammmm directory she thoilkht it wus utl n drcurrt until he dime down for recrea tional council that is the type of person they should have to look atfer the youngsters we have found a contractor who does a job when he says he will cleaning up the fire damage was quite a job however we worked with a will and everything was ready for the winding of the floors phoned ted bludd and he said ill be there in the booming clear the room believe it or not he was there and finished the job this is the time of year to make those birdhouses for our little feathered friends the mild weather persist nice for the fuel bill but bad for the heal tii nearly everyone is com plaining about some aclie or other skiing is out and outdoor rinks are a failure there will probably be plenty of snow before the win ter is over somhow this weather is a bit depressing well there is only one thing to do build for yourself a strong box rashion each part with care fit it with hasp and padlock put all your troubles there hide therein all your failures and each better cup you quaff lock all y6ur heartuchos in it then sit on the lid and laugh tell no one of its contents never its secrets uliarc drop in your cares and worries keep them forever there hide them from sight so
