is retiring and r several gentfemen who have served for many terms as appointed members of the high sthool board have not sought the elected office of the new board we par ticularly think of john bingham dr a mcallister dr f r watson and archdeacon w g q thomp- son all of whom have sdrvecl lengthy terms in dffice to them as well as to the newer men who are retiring v from public life the thanks of the town ia extended for giving so freely of their time in the important mat- ter of education j new years resolutions we suppose a newspaper like anyone else can make some new years resolutions i o put it very simply the only resolution which can be made by the editor and staff is to continue to strive to produce a better and better newspaper which after all is our main reason for being in business this past year has seen several changes which we believe have made your newspaper more in teresting a new type face was purchased which gives clearer reproduction and a new mat caster has pro vided much more efficient service for advertisers who wish to use illustrations in their advertisements the newspaper itself has seen the introduction of two new columns chatting with anne and along the boards both of which have a large following of readers an extra effort has been made to report local council news in some detail and we feel that some ser vice has been rendered in this regard in making rate payers more familiar with the business of the corpora tion in which they are all shareholders extra coverage on balhnafad news has been supplied by mrs j p kirkwood a former correspondent who took up her pen again and norval has also been more in the news thanks to rev j l self and other friends there who keep us posted on events the herald is still far from what we would wish it probably always will be the fascinating thing about a weekly newspaper is that no matter how hard one tries there are always hundreds of things which never get done dozens of ideas which never get beyond that stage and several things which because of the cost factor can never be attempted as they are not consistent with keeping the herald a profitmaking concern however in 1 949 we have some definite plans all aimed at making the herald a better newspaper not only for local readers but for those at a distance as well we hope that next year at this time we will be able to review them with pride a local recession christmas this year in georgetown is not as happy an occasion as it was in former years industrially the town was severely shaken when in early fall the an nouncement came of the closing of the lower provin cial paper mill which was georgetowns oldest indus try and had been a bulwark during the depression in the 30s a severe cut in the number of employees at the alliance mill and shortened work weeks at the remaining provincial coating mill have contributed to a local recession which everyone hopes will be of short duration an indication of how times can change almost overnight is seen by the results received by an advertiser for a young married man for outside em ployment in answer to this advertisement last week almost a dozen replies were received while the same advertiser with a similar advertisement a year or two ago drew a blank we have by no means lost faith in the future of our town which we fully believe will continue to be one of the best in ontario in time to come there is a sobering thought at the same time that where local industries were at one time locallyowned all of them small and large are now branches or subsidiaries of larger organizations and as such are not subject to the sentiment which exists when an owner lives among his employees and has a larger interest in the town as a community than outsiders could be expected to have it is
