for the meteorological depart mtnt we have kept for our own satis i etion ever since coming to this neigh twrhood about 27 years ago a record of the date of the first arrival of each kind of bird as we luive heard or seen i u tliis has proved a source of much i interest and pleasure for it ha kept our ears alert at all times for the sound of a new bird and comparison i of these yearly lists shows that the dilferent kinds or birds arrive in mucn tl e same order every year and very often on the same date in this way we have learned just ibout when to expect each new bird for example the little house wren may be expected the f rst week or may usually from the 4th o 7th i in addition to our tegular winter residents that is a dozen or more that j do no migrate the first immigrant la the crow for he does not go far south over in the niagara peninsula where i originated we used to see great flocks of them all winter hying vest in the morning and east at night to roost on islands in the niagara river ward ruddeu one of our most wide awake bird observers in this locality reports seeing the first crow this year shortly after ground hog day and also a song sparrow a week or so ear lier but we think that must have been one that got left in the usual fall mi gration the next one is usually the horned lark more easily heard than seen for he comes when the first bare patches of ground show through the melting snow armand swaokhamer reports hearing them last week on the southern hills back of their place to get to know and enjoy the winter residents there is nothing better than doing our best to feed them chunks of suet hung in the branches of trees and shrubs about the house will soon be found by many of them the first to find ours this winter was a pair of blue jays and they were hardly away berore two or three pairs of chickadees were on the job then a pair of the downy woodpeckers and a pair of nut hatches these are the pretty llmle acrobats that spend so much of their time standing on their heads just once o for has the hairy woodpecker put in on appearance he is very imllar to the downy but nearly twice as large then too we have had a half doa en junoos coming quite regularly they do not pay any attention to the suet but prefer feeding on the grouna and for them we scatter on top of the snow some small seeds saved from under the threshing machine at threshing time this we had intended for the pheasants but apparently there are so many socoued rabbit hunters in this town that the pheasants are afraid to show their heads outside of the neighbouring swamps this neighborhood has been favored forborne years past in having as a win ter resident that beautiful and own paratlvely rare bird the kentucky car dinal it was only occasionally we heard them when down on the farm but when we arrived in town lost march and air through the summer they delighted us with their song a brilliant color so for we have not seen nor heard of one being seen in town this winter and would be glad to hear from any one who has seen one how hollywood sleuths missed find ing some of these george ama teur performers may explain why we see some poor screen shows these
