the georgetown herald wednesday evening february 12th 1941 m rem or inter to the local farmer our farm page maintain high quality while a greater demand for cana dian eggs as a result of unproved oualitj was built up under the egg regulations as operated since 1923 there was still room for further im provement in quality particularly dur ing the summer months when at times epgs of indifferent quality found their way to market thus through the curtailment of consumption producers did not reap the full benefit of their labours and at the same time con sumers did not receive that high uni form quality which wouki stimulate the highest demand for eggs and bring further prosperity to the poultry in dustry under the new regulations with the establishment of registered egg grading stations the consequent improvement in grading and thp handling of eggs under cool condi tions during warm weather this de slrable quality may be brought about to the benefit of all concerned just how this will be done is self- evident in the past anyone was per mitted to grade eggs and eggs graded by an inexperienced or unequipped grader constituted a commercial las by the establishment of the registered egg grading stations grading will be permitted only at these stations with the exception of producers who may grade their own eggs for wholesale or retail sale at these stations eggs will be graded only by qualified persons and only in places where proper equip ment is provided as may be under stood when the requirements for regis tration arc known they are that all graders must have passed a depart mental test the grading equipment must be satisfactory the egg rooms must be so arranged as to permit pro per handling the rooms must be sep arated from any other business which might be harmful to eggs and the rooms must be kept cool during warm weather the regulations do not place control in the hands of large dealers because the business is not adaptable to large centralized control and most of the s at country paints will be oper ated by small private or cooperative 1 there is no restriction as to the number of registered egg grad ing stations the number being based entirely an the volume of eggs avail able in the locality m a station is not located in his town or district the producer may end his eggs to a first recerrer ttfttftbiytb local twrcbant who will weotify each farmers eggs to the re gistered station the returns from the station will come back from the sta tion to the first receiver who will make a settlemsnt wkb u producer whan a producer everyone has experienced the com fort of a windbreak on a cold windy winters day it is enough to say that the sheltered areas seem very much warmer than the wind swept ones such shelter around the farm build ings would seem to be a necessity states e t goring dominion experi mental station kapuskaslng onl how can this shelter be built up the only practical method is by planting trees broad belts of trees planted on the sides from which the prevailing winds blow stop the ley blasts and maintain in their lee calm in which life can be lived in comfort trees dlfter in their value for this purpose evergreens are the best they present the greatest resistance to the passage of air and thus stop it most effectively unfortunately they are slow growing and take some years to provide shelter deciduous trees such as poplars grow quickly but offer less resistance to the wind they will be quite satisfactory if planted in a broad enough belt per haps the best windbreak can be m up of a mixture of trees such as spruce and poplars by alternating the trees in the rows and staggering the rows effective protection can be built up in a comparatively short time the quick growing short lived poplars give early protection when they reach maturity and begin to die tha sfcwar growing e are ready to taka their place no matter what the con ditions are some tree can usually be found to be con stantly the centre of great movements the holy land of christians jews and moslems u as always a crossroads of the world in ancient times it was the route of trade and conquest between egypt and mesopotamia now it lie on theeaster flank of the sues can al if the nazis attempt to push tbroiurh turkey by land to tho canal ther way jes through palestine if the suez were blocked the landfoute to india lies across palestine vital air routes from britain to the far east depend upon their base at tib erias in palestine palestine has become an important entrepot for the arab states which have set themselves up at her back iraq saudi arabia transjordan hej great harbour at haifa is not only a potential naval base but the terminus of the oil pipeline which brings the oil from iraq to the tankers in the mediterranean a refinery has re cently been set up at haifa so that the british navy in the eastern medi terranean can refuel here and thus obtain a great advantage over their oilstarved opponents this pipeline previously had another outlet at tri poli in french controlled syria but since the collapse of france made the position or syria uncertain the en tire flow of oil has been diverted to haifa italy needs oil desperately and germany seriously palestine helps to bar their way to the rich oil fields of the middle east for this reason italy was not long in striking at palestine in july there were murderous attacks on haifa and on telaviv the fine modern city which jewish immigrants have built the entry of italy into the war brought the war to palestine the raids on haifa and telaviv which left many civilian casualties did little military damage but they did undermine ita lian propaganda jews and arabs alike were killed and their anger has unit ed them more effectively than any event of recent years the transformation of palestine since the outbreak of war has been very encouraging british efforts to reconcile her pledges to create a jewish national home and to reco gnize an arab state have involved her in the job of pouetng a country torn by violent racial strife the paganda of german and italians played its part strife and it wa to hope that palestine would be son thorn in tho british flesh 1 jews had of course no reason to lore the nazis and tha arabs suspicious of german irrhantinrw were strongly an tagonistic to tha italians who had oiaa their fellow lfiakun ubya and albania tnte common il enabled all palestinians to realise that whatever their objections to british suaerarnty they could gain nothing by tho otamps of british power in the within a law weeks of the outbreak of war the jaws ha palestine had car ried out a voluntary fmrm of over 90 at their people eligible for ser vice in national offnce both jean and arabs were invited to provide men for technical service wrth the british forces in palestine one mixed com pany of jews and arabs in the pales tine auxiliary pioneer corps served in flanders civil strife has virtually ceased although the announcement early in 1940 of regulations restricting the sale of land to nonarabs was greatly resented by the jews the jews too resented the nonacceptance of their offers to form an army but british authorities undoubtedly feared possible repercussions of the formation of one section of a divided population into an armed force since the entry of italy howewr separate jewish and arab mechanical transport oompanlea have bean recruited oombatant unite for home defence are being formed from volunteers alone although the high commissioner has- tha power to conscript both wealth and manpower enthusiasm for home wenoe and for the british cause are frequently ex- pressed by both arabs and jews the jews have appealed to american jewry for assistance and plans are under way for the formation abroad of an army of 100000 jews to defend pale stine most of this artny is to be raised in the united states and equip ped by the british government with the financial assistance of jews throughout the world large forces of british troops including thousands of australians and hew zealanders have been in palestine since therout- break of war they have been join ed by recent reinforcements from home as well as by about 6 000 polish soldiers and many french legionnaires who left syria when that country be came noncombatant until last june the economic life oi palestine was not greatly disturbed since then however mediterranean shipping has been disrupted important markets in eurdpe have been out off and the important trade with neigh bouring syria has been at a standstill compensation has come from increas ed trade with blrtaln and from the presence of large numbers of troops with money to spend in the country oranges grapefruit and other citrus fruits make up ordinarily about 80 of the country s total exports but during the past year only about hat the usual amount has been shipped space in boats is at a premium for palestinian oranges must now go round the cape to reach england but the jewish immigrants in palestine ate resourceful scientists trained in the w oi ids best schools they have al ready turned the desert into farms and the government is making great efforts to increase food production now tha foods from abroad are not easily a j liable a promising chemical in dustry has sprung up based on the products of the dead sea palestine will now be the empires main source of supply for the potash which for merly came from alsace production of magnesium chloride sulphur bromide and other useful products nm increased considerably textiles and drugs which were formerly imported are now being made at home scient ists have found a way of lining the sur plus of citrus fruits to make acetone and a factory is being set up at tel- aviv to make paper from scrap a representative of palestine is attend ing the eastern group supply con ference in delhi which is setting out to coordinate production in british coun tries east of sues palestine is pre paring herself to be an important source of supply in a vital region air raid horn heard in montreal r tr last weabaarftaot taacj 2ppm- fc ndd sbdtet in amy
