office the fac tory the field or the home there is always an undercurrent of strain an undsrourrent that drains vi tality insidiously and surely the more complex the civilis ation the greater the drain the greater the need for renewal of the forces that lie at the root of the wellbeing of mankind the fountain of rejuvenation is in nature and the closer tho com munion the more favourable the ro- b ii its hence the instinctive journey ing of the human family to seek ths solace of the sea and of the mountains these the two great foots against whioli the belittling mind of man can raise nothing in lit comparison impress indelibly upon humanity the sense of awe out of which comes the washing from the mind of the clogging ac cumulations of worry and strian it was my good fortune accom panied by mrs moore and aileen to enjoy a trip through our great canadian rockies via the yellow- head pass on the canadian nation al railway a few weeks ago leaving toronto on the evening of july 11th by the cnr we journeyed via port arthur fort williams winnipeg north battle- ford and edmonton on to tho foot hills of the rqokiosand through the yellowheod pass to view for the first time the glorious panoramas in tho canadian northern bookies peaks with glistening crowns of eternal iceand snow and mountain lakos of singular boauty and charm towering awesome magnifloont natures mountain edifices surely instil peace into the wracked nerves of humanity tho mantle of care heritage of a workaday world falls unheeded from your shoulders this wonderland of mountains lakes valleys and waterfalls in the yellowheod pass country is delimited a perpetual playground under the divisions jasper park and mount bobson park in it are peaks yot unconquerod and little known greater in number crock rivor leading up to the springs is one of the most magnificent pieces of scenery yet discovered in the rocky mountains this can yon towers for hundreds of feet and in places the channel worn by the water in past ages and through which it rushes with a mighty roar is not more than 20 feet in width boohe miette and other peaks in tbe miette range directly across the valley are grouped by nature into a pleasing picture so inter esting is the landscape that few travellers note the crossing of snake indian river along this waterway an old indian trail leads hunting parties today to the bear coveted rocky mountain sheep and other game beyond the limits of jasper park a little farther and wo are opposite tbe last site of jaaper house a post kept by jas per unwes for tho hudson bay company here the waters of the rooky river join tho athabaska another trail for hunters also leads through its gorges and along its course to jacques lake over qsborno pass skirts beautiful medioine requiring a few miles to settle down into a single sober stream that has hardly boon accomplished when the train crosses the snaring riv er tho waters of tho snaring fed from glaciers off to tho north west pour into the athabaska through walls of rock towering precipitously to more than 800 feet above the bottom lands an old indian trail leads through the canyons in some places tho walls are only a few yards apart a dis tance of between two and three miles to open valley a glorious panorama of snowclod peaks is there and mayhap especially if aided by powerful glassop you might be so fortunate as to glimpse wary rooky mountain sheep feod- ing on the uplands tho range is known as the snaring mountains across the athabaska the sharp apirolike peaks of the colin range project into tho clouds for some are more than 88 lb- feet in altit ude tbe distinctive formation of tho range is known looally as old man mountain because even from tbe train it exhibits a traceable re semblance to the face of an old man tho guardian spirit of the range we roll by the sito of henry bouse below tbe rooky ramparts of the palisade un fortunately no ruins remain to prove the claim that here more than n century
