water supplies diminishing farm pond value increases talunafad awatj srai the importance of small farm poads in coping with an increasing demand and diminishing supply of water especially in southwestern ontario is emphasized by lake erie district forester j k rey nolds of the ontario department of lands and forests in this extreme southwesterly corner of ontario where water supplies for many cities as well as farms are obtained from wells streams springs and impound ments adequate quantities of wat- er are becoming increasingly -dif- ficmlt to obtain mr reynolds say this increasing shortage is be ing felt not only as a result of drying up or are being filled in partly through mismanagement but largely from the gradual change in the physical feature of the land which foes along with the change in land use against this increased demand i and diminished supply can be bal anced one outstanding nature fea ture namely that southern ontario receives on the average 30 inches or more of rainfall in a year al though there is often a lack of rainfall in the summer months there a an ample supply in winter and spring the need therefore is to store some of this spring runoff by proper land use in the earth itself farm union presents tv lamp to couple ledgers one more issue of our value packed handbill dont miss the savings you can make low prices every day mrs h mcewan mr a result of the mechanization of farming operations improvements in farm sanitation the demands of larger herds of cattle and irrigation of farm crops x supplies oh the athcr hand are diminishing shallow wells often get their supply from perched water tables which are rapidly dis appearing and are not likely to be ic established deep wells and some shallow wells draw water ft a th p of -un- 1 on eroding land is the lack ofrwat- derground water this in many l has lowered considerably streams springs and ponds are i supply and maintain summer flow in streams and springs farm ponds are directly con nected with soil conservation the study of soil erosion in southern ontario reveals that the most im portant single remedy for arresting this insidious process is the estab lishment ol good sod cover this in turn shoujd provide a considerable increase of grazing land one of the biggest obstacles to establishing improved pasture ering places for herds- properly managed springs streams and nat ural ponds give the cheapest and the local farm union met at mr boyds home and spent a social time and presented them with a tv lamp mr and mrs ken cotton are moving to marsville
