october meeting in limehouse memorial hall on oct ober 4 with is ladies present mrs frank brown presided andopened the meeting with school days and the lords prayer the roll call was answered with the name of a former pupil of ss 9 present occupation and place of abode reports of different standing committees were given by the con veners the highlight of these being the school garden report by mrs- mack pigment just as the interior gisby and the presentation to miss patsy crawford who won the sil ver cup for most points in the con test the cup was donated by mr pargeter of acton judge of the gardens and in his unavoidable absence was presented to patsy by mrs gisby the convener mrs s kirkpatrick gave the re port on the hall board meeting re questing that all interested attend a meeting that evening to decide ways and means of heating the hall and other improvements there is a hall fund with 17500 on hand a letter was read concerning garbage being dumped on roadsid es it may not be generally known but there is a heavy fine for any one found dumping garbage of any kind on the side of a roadway needless to say the members of the wi are on the alert to catch anyone doing so with a garbage collector in the neighborhood it seems unnecessary to dump such material in the countryside the sixth line seems to be a favorite dumping ground supposedly be cause there is not the constant tra vel on it there is on other nearby roads it is under special observ ance as well as a few other back roads and it is hoped the culprits will be apprehended in the near future mrs a w benton gave a very interesting paper on s s 9 the first school in this section was built on lot 18 con 6 west it was last occupied as a residence by a farm laborer then was vacant for some years w bessey had it torn down and the material used to build a house on queen st in georgetown the two storey stone building now in use was built in 1875 on lot 21 the upper storey fell into disuse about 1884 the last teacher was miss isabella gillies by the diligent work of the pres ent trustees and some welcome help from a few ratepayers this is now a fine tworoomed school at not too high a cost it has hyd ro telephone piano and mijsic teacher chemical toilets were in stalled in 1940 and the basement dug out and an oil furnace in stalled a parcel of land was bought from n ruddcll on lot 20 and is used as an addition to the playground mrs w mitchell gave current events and mrs f brown and mrs e sanford reported on the area convention at guelph the resolutions presented brought out many opinions one lady moved that milk be the sole beverage at wi meetings to show a practical example of the im portance of milk in everyday diet she spoke of the amount of soft drinks sold even at farm sales however the ladies did not favor milk as a sole beverage at wl meetings contending that liquor advertisements hold no value and are detrimental to youngs people and society as a whole one resol ution askedthat the authority be withheld for such advertising the convention also supported a resolution that the department of education in ontario be petitioned to authorize the use of standard school books such as speller math ematics social studies english text books as well as readers of the eighth grade of the public schools to the province7theold age pen sion came under discussion it was contended that 40 a month is not sufficient for the needs of persons with no other support and it was moved that the government be asked to increase it to 960 the matting closed with god save the queen and all enjoyed a social hour and a cup of tea mrs crveredita and mrs s kirkpat- ifck wet a ujuvbiwi aftd mrs f t c brown was hostess for the day an optometrist speaks btel buchner ro 48 mill st acton the living camera second of two parts in a sense the human eye is i living camera the crystalclear parts of the eye act as a camera lens and focus lightrays from the object of regard to form an up sidedown lightimage on the light- sensitive layer of nerve cells ret ina at the back of the eye the walls of the eye are lined with of a camera is painted black to prevent light from being reflected from the wall and interfering with the lightimage just as we change the focus set ting ie focal length of a cam era lens to photograph objects at different distances the human eye by changing the curvature of its lightbending interfaces is able to change its focal length in order to focus images precisely on the retina of the eye most cameras have a diaphragm which can be adjusted to control the amount of light falling on the film the iris colored parti of tho eve acts as a diaphragm contract ing the pupil when first exposed to bright light and expanding it when conditions of relative dark ness are first encountered the lightsensitive nerve cell layer of the eye is thus protected against sudden changes in illumination this nerve cell layer or retina is ii mosaic of millions of specializ ed cells called rods and cones which lines the posterior two- thirds of the supporting wallof the eye these nerve cells contain a chemical substance which is bleached bv exposure to light thus triggering a nerve impulse in each cell which is carried by an indiv idual nerve fibre to the brain just as each plug in a telephone switchboard is connected to a sep arate wire which leads to a single particular telephone in this way the different parts of the retina of the eye have more or less individ ual representation in the brain the brain registers the shape pos ition in the retina etc of these patterns of nerve sensations and interprets these into visual know ledge i have tried to explain in this and preceding articles that the eye is simply a specialized sense organ which is aimed at the ob ject being seen which focuses light from that object to form an image on its mosaic rf lightsensitive neryc cells this image or pattern of stimulated nerve cells causes a pattern of nerve impulses to be sent to the brain the brain inter prets this pattern into what we know as our priceless possession our vision it is obvious that if it were not for the brains ability to interpret these sensations into meaningful visual perception the eye and all its sensations would be as useless as spectacles to a blind man some interesting illustrations of this vital factor have occurred ii certain cases of brain injury in this type of injury known as men tal or psychic blindness the brains ability to interpret visual sensafc ions into meaningful visuatxber ception is impaired for instance the patient may be holding a book the eyes are perfect and the primary optic centers of the brain areperfect but that part of the brain connected with visual mem ory is defective the patient re ceives the sensation of the book and he realizes that he is holding something he may even be able to give a detailed description of its appearance but he canstot name the object and he may not even be able to describe its use thus we can understand that you may look with your eyes but you see with your brain ukl construction has begun at the new sunoco gas station on no 7 highway
