prepared by engineers on the local water situation bears out these- steps are not just prudent moves for the future but downright re quisites of the present the report highlights of which were sum marized in the news columns of this paper lasl month emphasized that if acton were called upon now or when the lakeview subdivision is finished next summerto supply a sizeable quan tity of water to a new industry it would be un able todo so this circumstance aside from the other press ing reasons to find more water puts a stamp of urgency on the whole project new industries are not pieinthesky for towns in this part of ontario they are competitive realities definitely to be had as canadas expanding economy con tinues to bloom heaviest in rich ontario they ore to be had but they must be competed for certainly a town with barely enough or in adequate water supply is in no position to com pete tor new industries this is not to infer that acton in most respects is not competitive despite recurring cries of critics who are impatient for ostensible and immediate results there are men and agencies in addition to elected bodies of ac ton working diligently to keep our town in the competitive range for relocating of new indus tries news last week that an option for land has been taken and test drilling about to start on a likely site comes as a certain assurance that ac ton intends to maintain the requirements that keep a towh in this competitive range autumn forecast one of the happier ways of taking a hot sum mer is to think about autumn in this county the fall months can always be counted on for brisk days and cool nights but when summer acts up as it has this year too much rain too little sunshine abnormal temperatures autumn is looked to with appre hension and doubt in halton its fall fair time youngsters are back to school organizations are stepping up activity here and there some of the bigger old- et maples are tinging away from green to sug gestions of the brilliant reds yellows and rusts to come by all these standards autumn is on its re solute way how then remembering our capric ious summer will the conversation go with the weather in the next couple of months we might gelrnore rain as if we havent had enough we might get a hot spell or we might get- an early winter its doubtful if even the muchmaligned weatherman knows in any event and veve often thought this is the safest fore- i cast of all the weather will likely go the way some diffident observer expressed long ago the weather continuing a proper foundation once again criticism of the lack of prepared- nessjof university entrants has been voiced dr eugene forsey research director of the canadian congress of labor said it was perfectly appal ling the waste of teachers and students in uni versity because of the shortcowiings of the schools in sending on to universities inadequately equip ped students we are not too familiar with the adequacy of those who approach the walls of a university planning to emerge on the other side with a cap gown and diplopia bearing initials ii would however seem that the suggestion of inadequacy should not be laid entirely at the public and high school classroom door j for too long there hayebeen steps to elimi nate the care guidance and direction of the par- ent from all considerations of the children and- their future potential for too jong the experts have levelled criticism at other experts with no suggestion that the foundation laid in the home might have been at fault in some homes the foundation of a good education is encouraged in some it is tolerated and in others it is despised the soundness of the foundation or attitude toward education laid in the homes has as significant a bearing on the childs success at university as does the classroom teaching as experts criticize one another leaving the parent entirely without consideration the more the parent will be inclined to discount his own place in forming a childs future if there is inadequacy in the university aspir ants training some of the blame mustbe laid at the doorstep of the home and certainly not en tirety in the classroom parents are and always will be a far greater influence on the childs future and perhaps its time the experts realized that the sounding board as the chilly mornings and early darkened evenings slip into vogue with the deepening fall season county and provincial farm forums will be preparing for the fall and winter season weve looked over the list of subjects that county farrrr forums will be discussing and they should all provide some enlightening discussion its refreshing too that people meet in social at mosphere to discuss the situations that concern them too often now it seems there is a growing complacency to accept the opinions directed at individuals through the voice of radio and tele vision commentators who are supposed special ists in their field of comment the farm forum provides an excellent sound ing board on which opinions can be voiced and registered it provides a type of thermometer of opinion that is lacking in the urban life groups meet only for some phase of service or educa tional work but not exclusively for the exchange of opinion early americans had the coffee house the english had the pub and early canadians had the cracker barrel these were unorganized places for the expression of opinion and general meet ing corner with the medium of radio the groups now meet as farm forums having the subject intro duced and then discussion following farm for ums can play an important part in correlating the opinions of citizens and inspiring directed lines of thought they have a job to do as an effective sounding board intelligently used tiiuimna v nritkmiiyit ad man an unknown number of kiddies with upset stomach are a few of the inevitable signs that actons annual fall fair is over for another year but these are far overshadowed by the pleas ant and valuable
