to the plucky milk maid bat it brought honor to ballon coanty which had three ether girls entered in the contest dolores naturally was overjoyed at winning the title in this the first competition of its kind held at the cnje premier frost presented her with the dairy qneen trophy donated by she ontario milk distributors association and ml g simpson of the as presented a sterling silver tray to use whmer she was gtven her choice of any one of five purebred heifers one of each dairy breed entered in the contest and as she was milking a guernsey cow when she won the title she naturally picked church areclen mills has centenary eden mills united church eden mills will be celebrating its 100th anniversary september 9 with 11 oclock and seven oclock services taking the place of the regular sunday afternoon service the minister kenneth griffiths will set the order of service and arrange the many details for both servic es rev carmen dyer will be the guest speaker for the morning ser vice rev glen taylor chairman of the guelph presbytery and min ister ot melville united church fergus will be the guest speaker for the evening service the newlyformed choir of the eden mills united church under miss kathleen stanley is preparing a special program for the morning the choir of the rockwood united church is expected to sing at the evening service through the generosity of a friend who wished to remain an onymous a sum of money was pre sented to the church that is to be used to purchase new hymn books though the church is celebrating its 100th year as a congregation it is at least a few years older than this though no records remain to point out the exact year first mention of this congregation is found in the nassagawcya circuit book at a quarterly meeting held on april 5 1856 in rbenezer chap el on the guelph road at this early date the church was known as the canadian wesleyan meth odist new connexion church a list was found of the names of the congregation in 1858 there were 22 members and at least throe of these have descendants living today in the village and nearby mrs william mi nos grandpar ents john and mary millard were two on this early list lindsay toltons greatgrandfather joscpii langdalc is another man joseph langdalc was also the grandfather of miss sadie roberts mrs will lowrie on the guelph road is a niece of mashack bardwell he having no direct descendants it was meshack bardwell who with heenry darby was cogiver of the churchs first bible for the pulpit it was given by these two gentle men in 1861 the year the present church was built mrs mino was given this bible recently by the congregation when a new one was purchased the name hortop once so well known in eden mills is on this early list elizabeth and henry hortop being two- of the members of the 1858 congregation in the following years many fam ilies joined this church one being the haiflpson family who have descendants in the village today a special guest book has been purchased for the anniversary and mr qriffiths and the congregation hope that former members and de scendants of those who once be longed to this little stone church will return for this special occas
