fund of valuable data it cob tallied in he progre report on dairy herd improvement work tor itoi which waa recently released all information in this outstanding report wh compiled by the ontario agricultural college in cooperat ion with the livestock and farm ec onomics tranche of the ontario department of agriculture there are m dhia associat ion in the province three of which are in halton these m associations include ism nerds with an enrol- merit of ss8m cows all records are baaed on a sob day period the av erage milk production for 1985 was 84 lbs tnilk and 313 lbs of rf in contrast to tj84 lba milk and its lba of fat in 1m1 of the 54 groups or associations halton wea association supervised by george r alccormack was in alxth posit ion and had 794 per cent of its cows enrofled qualify for certific ate with an averjgge production of 9170 lba milk and 34s lba bf halton centre supervised by howard king was in seventh posit ion with 717 per cent of the sos cowl qualifying for certificates their average production was 970 lbs milk and 348 lbs bf 83 per cent of the 53s cows in the hattort bast association supervised by frank w chisholm qualified for certificates the average production of this group was 8788 lbs milk and 333 lbs b f the top herd in halton was that of roy j wilson of milton r r 4 whose herd on a 305 day lactation averaged 12 255 lbs milk and 429 lbs buttcrfat other halton herds in the 400 lb class were those of gnlbraith bro burlington rr 1 walker gtinby burlington denzil ijiwrencc of milton alton and ev erett burlington arthur ruddell and son of georgetown charles fatt of campbcuville alfred ford j of milton tap buttcrfat cow the top cow in the province from a buttcrfat standpoint was a pure bred guernsey in the herd of walker gunby of burlington with 750 lbs bf and 15 098 lbs of milk another pure bred guern sey in the same herd stood fourth in the province with 15b91 lbs milk and 689 lbo b f the top milk cow was a former halton cow she was bred bj tom glffcn of george town and purchased by j h gil lespie of erin nt the giffen dispers al this cow produced 21259 lbs milk and 739 lbs bf in the three year old class hnr- vey campbell of milton had the top halton three year old she is a pure bred holstoin and placed sixth in the province with a production of 19006 lbs milk and 570 lbs bf among the two year olds n pure bred holstein heifer owned by gnl braith bros was sixth in the pro vincial list with 12 810 lbs of milk and 534 lbs of bf artificial vs natural under breed distribution we note that while all of the dnir breeds are represented 87 3 per cent of the 23830 cows enrolled in d h i a work arc holsteins an analysis of this large group reveals that the cows from artificial service in the average have higher production than those from natural service for example the z339 two- ear- olds from artificial insemination have an average production of 8292 lbs milk and 290 lbs b f against an average production of 7856 lbs milk and 272 lbs butterfat in the case of the 3983 two year olds from natural service in the case of the threeyearolds from artificial insemination the average production was 9058 lbs milk and 310 lbs fat against an average of 8890 lbs of milk and 302 lbs fat in the case of the three- yearolds from natural service an analyses of the touryearolds and mature cows tells a similar story the production of the artif icially bred fouryearolds have an average production 880 lbs higher than those from natural service the margin in the case of the mature cows is 398 lbs of milk and 27 lbs of fat in favor of the artif icially bred group hay ihg progress slow cropgood 1956 is a year of surprises in early june we had prospects for a 60 or 70 per cent hay crop at best today july 13 we have pretty close to a normal crop of hay true the bulk of it while cut is still in the fields catchy weather coupled with little or no farm labor has made progress slow on may 24 halton mows were emptier than they had been in years there had been little growth of grass and prospects pointed to short pastures throughout 1956 to day the pastures are excellent on may 24 little of the spring grain crop had been seeded many of us thought it was too late for spring grain toda spring giuins in general are n good color and look promis ing t in lute pril and earl may mun fields of fall wheat looked spott todav the w heat is turning and while some fields are lodged pi aspects are for close to a normal crop in halton yes the corn crop is backward but if these sin prises continue the corn crop ma look quite different bv midseptember at the moment inunv are wondering and worry ing as to whether or not thov will ever get the crop off however perhaps w e v ill get some more sur prises and b the end of september we ma bo wondering what we had to wbrrv about soils land use gr6up to visit faiths in halton the program for the fourth ah nual junior farmer soils and land use tour was juit released by the
