could almost eat them raw they smell so good this is my second attempt at buns after a lapse of several years in which time i didnt make any at all and at one time 1 made them every week that was when the young sters were at home and i found yeast bum i filling and less expensive than trying to keep the cookie jar full l made uiis daich today because bob and joy will be in later and i know they will en joy them funny how we get away from doing things at one time i made all my own bread i couldnt imag ine my family being satisfied with of tht bleeding which didnt make the milkmi any easier and wouldnt have been allowed by the health j unit in this day and age porridge was another standby at ginger farm always porridge for breakfast nut quickmeal porridge but real old scotch oatmeal that is another habit that fell by the way now its packaged cereal and in those days we had tea at breakfast time now its coffee in fact we wouldnt say thank you for breakfast without it or grape fruit it was the youngsters who changed out habits bob took a liking to coffee when he was in the army so when he was at home on leave i naturally made coffee for him and a pot of tea for ourselv es but that got to be too much of a chore so finally wc all drank coffee maybe its the weather has put me in a reminiscent mood a few days ago we had a real oldtime storm and we are promised more of the samp the snow was swirl ing andblowing like fury but not enough of it to pile into heavy drifts and it didnt interfere with bakers uiead then one bread companies started canvassing for customers around here and i bought bread once a week to save baking so often eventually our family was reduced in number and it didnt seem worthwhile baking just for two or three so the baker got another regular customer it was the same thing with but ter even when we stopped mak ing butter to sell i always did a churning for ourselves every few weeks the old barrel churn is still down in the cellar now we buy butter all the time butter- not margarine id have you know but there were some things we never did do very well not being born to it as one might say cur ing pork for instance we tried several methods but our side bacon was always hard and unappetising as for headcheese the look and smell of a pigs head stewing awav made me feel sick after several attempts wc ended up by giving the head away after a butchering but i liked rendering lard there was something fascinating in re ducing all the cuttings to liquid grease and cracklings i was never much of a hand at making soap partner never want ed me to do it anyway because when he first came to canada he lived on a farm where homemade soap was always used it was very strong and very smell and in win tertime his hands were raw and 18 spotlight on the district news hems of interest gleaned from the newspaper of the district gordon leaver heads liberals gordon leaver of gakville was elected president of the halton road traffic at all in the old days the read past here was a county road not a highway and it was often impassable after a bad storm of course no one ever thought of driving a car during the winter anyway the old flivver was jack ed up on blocks for months at a time even whon spr c the h s holden optometrist eyes examined glasses fitted 7 douglas st guelph car couldnt be used because of the mud morses were allimportant in those das and so were the trains cattle and pigs were shipped to the stockyards bv rail every station had its loading yard and farm stock was taken there by sleigh or wagon sometimes cattle were herded along the road on foot i remember the first time partner sent out a load of pigs by motor transport we watched the truck go down the lane and thought it the list word in convenience for farmers the second time we were not so sure an old sow that was being shipped broke the side of the loading chute and got away she was a contrary old dame anyway so we finally ate her and then the chickens hatched bv broody hens i remember hav ing as many as 15 setting hens at one time when the chicks were hatched we took half the hens awav keeping the ones with a nice motherly disposition some times thev were too motherly and smothered some of the chicks dur ing the night oh the sick feeling when vou found a numler of poor little dead chicks under a mother hen or halfgrownn chicks killed bv rate skunks or carried awav bv a fox the time came when we got davold chicks and a brooder stove later it was started chicks and then eight week old mixed chicks now we buv ready to lav pullets which make the work lighter as we grow older such changes during the years it sounds like a century ago and ct it all took place in the 30odd venrs we have been farming sometimes when i speak of present conveniences i wonder if i sound smuk actually we ire anything but smug it just is that as wo look bnck we reali7e how hard wc and other farm folk worked with few conveniences and so little of the comforts of life but we are glad we went through that period otherwise wc wouldnt know en- ouch to apnreciate the warm con venient and comfortable homes of todav annual meeting held in the town hall
