her ac cessories were of cocoa shade and her corsage of green orchids in the value of its production the pulp and paper industry has headed the list of canadian peace time manufacturing industries for a quarter of a century the busy fall season is still with us on most farms threshing is over tut there are other jobs to do pullets to house cattle to change from pasture to stubbie fall jvheat to sow apples to pick and the other hundred and one jobs that have to be done before the leaves turn crimson and gold in the house canning and pickling is still the qjrdjer of the day the aroma of pickling spices is wafteh abroad and mother surveys with satisfact ion rows of green nineday pickl es rich red beets and the deep yellow of mustard pickles in fact a row of pickles can be a pleasing study in color contrast the children of course are back to school and mother must now do her own fetching and carrying surprising the number of par ental steps that can be saved when the children are around on many farms the above picture holds true on other farms as with part ner and myself children have grown up and moved away si now we do our own fetching and carrying or in many ways fetch and carry for each cither on a farm where active farming is stil carried on modern machinery has taken the place of willing hands taken yie pldce did i say 1 wonder a combine and a hay baler speeds up threshing and haying tremendously providing there is no mechanical breakdown less manual work is now required for many other jobs but it seems to me the work involved is taking more out of the older farmer than it ever did not physically perhaps- with a milking machine a man can milk 15 cows as easily a he milked five years ago but the tension is greater the output of nervous energy is increased tremendously from the days when dad find the boys loaded loose hay on the hay rack and milked the cows by hand agriculture science has progresscjp by leaps and bounds during in- last 25 years but i have yet to be convinced that the average older farmer is leading an easier life shorter hours yes daily chores lessened considerably as long as everything goe all rikht but a breakdown with the milk ing machine combine or baler or a power failure can lake more oii of a man in nervous tension than would the physical energy used- for the same job the oldfashioned way however there is nothing that can be dpne about it manual farm labor being practically nonir existent as a result progress and invention go hand in hand and it is probably only to the older farmer that adjustment comes a little dif ficult the younger generation naturally accepts modern methods of farm ing in its stride just as it accepts jgt planes rind fast auto- mobiles mechanized farming is also an attraction to the middleaged businessman with a yen for the wide open spaces to him farming with modern machinery appears de ceptively easy so he takes up farming as a sideline or goes out of business altogether buys a hundred acres in an unknown tcrritory- spends several thousand dollars modernizing the house anof barn and another few thousand on pedi- greed cattle in a great many cases a few years finds the businessmanfarm er an older and a wiser man 1 as a result the farm is again on he markejt the businessman having discovered by bitter experience that to uninitiated modern farm machinery merely substitute one head ache for another ironically enough if it were not for modern machinery there would be fewer businessmenformers if the would- be farmer thought he might have to milk cows by hand clean out stables with a wheelbarrow and take hay and crop off the field the c idfashioned way he might not be quite so keen on buying a farm but of course there are many successful businessmen farmers there is the executive type who can afford a farm manager and other help and thus- indulge his hobby such farms are the show windows of agriculture a very different proposition from the bus inessman who sets out to run a farm by himself even if he has every piece of modern machinery he can get well i guess this is where i turn grandmother and leave farmers and farm methods good bad and in different to take care of them selves dee arthur david and honey have jut come in and i imagine i shall be required to do a spot of baby sittingand dog sit ting while they go hunting torn- atoes look to me as if dave has grown aboutwo inches since we last saw him and that was only about two weeks ago how children vary one wee niece two and a half years old weighs only about 25 pounds and yet is as healthy and active as a child could be excuse me i must rescue the cats and dogs dave has already made a beeline in their direction he is liable to love them to death pulp paper industry spends
