very dlf- rom our own it was a ce with wl head ot r o p guernsey cattle housed in huge barm with all the usual accoma- dntlon that aoa with such places includina fluorescent llflhting over each stall for field work there was a full line of power machinery there were also added features that at traded much public attention in separate enclosures there was a buck and two deer two racoons some ducks of a fancy bread kulnoa fowl hnd nix pens of dif ferent kinds of golden pheasants strutting around the yard were also a number of peacocks two of them deodwhltc and the others with the traditional bluegreen markings at night they roasted on top of the silo and woke me up each morning unfortunately all these lovely peacocks were minus their fantalls as this is the moult ing season the house stood in landscaped grounds close to the highway across the road luh green pisture sloped gently down to the rldeau river however my hosteis and i did not linger overly long at the farm instead we were out each day and really saw ottawa i had heard our capital city was a lovely place but i wai not prepared for the outstanding scenic beauty of its canal and rivers its benutlful shade trees ind marvellous greenneis thit was everywhere for me water is always a major attraction in scenery and in ot tawa one ncirly always has h in sight from the canal the rldeau river or the ottawa river wc went for drives and walks along the parkways and for a boat ride on the cinal we saw ottawa from the top of the pence tower and looked up to it from the val leys below we drove along the shnded winding rond by rldeau hall ue vlsi ted hogs back long island and minotlck ind we saw locks open and close to lot through pleasure yachts and motor boats here we picked up some surpris ing information we naturally sup posed there would be a toll for boatowners using the locks but no- even though it might be only a small motor launch the locks would bo operated free of charge from d am to 11 pm as the man at the winch observed it is the only tix free accommodation enjoy ed by the tnvelling public but free service his this result the revenue received from the locks last year was considerably less than the actual operating costs which means i suppose that everybody pays through taxation while those who actually use the locks do so at no additional cost probably- the outstanding feature of our sightseeing pleasures was a trip by bus to gnnanoque ind then a cruise by motor 1mnch through the thousind islinds it v is on one of thost dis when evervone on hnd wis limp with the licit but on
