ivuac two the acton free press acton- ontario thursday may 1st 1862 the biggest bite we were at a meeting recently when the sub let of increasing local taxes came in for discus sion and ono man said aay iayes have increased 25 this year wo camo back homo andtffade a comparison of our taxes ofjrie pasr two years and found wo could claim a better increase than our friend but wo picked up an ilom on our weekend reading and found that someone had computed tho tax on ono of tho automobiles in the low price field and before the last budgot had lopped off 140 of tho tax buyers of cars were contri buting in total taxes on the purchase price of a car not loss than 750 wo recalled that back in i934 tho same make of car was purchased for 875 which included everything that went with cars of that period wo simply pass this on because in our reason ing the complaint about high taxation is not due in the municipal field but in the provincial and fedoral taxation tho taxos on everything used in evoryday life are so invisible that we do not rea- lizo what they contribute to the cost of living we dont want municipal taxes or municipal sponding to bo increased but we do think tho average pocketbook is more pinched by taxation in fiolds other than municipal and wo have on several occasions pointed out the things munici pal taxation provides the wrong trend at the beginning of the century 60 of the population of canada lived on farms and 40 in the towns and cities when thesgnal figures are complotod for the latest census it will likely be found that those proportions are now reversed in another ten years if the present trend con tinues less than a jhird of canadians will be liv ing on the land even if we could produce enough with only fi fraction of our population on the land there would be grave disadvantages declares the fin ancial post it is not a good thing for any nation to have all its people packed into cities and certainly not safe in these uncertain times it wifl pay us to watch carefully the move ment of population from the country some of it is natural and inevitable some of it may be ac tually beneficial but we would be shortsighted il we pretended that it did not matter that it could go on indefinitely without sapping our national strength community centres many of us can recall when a township hall was a place for councils and municipal officials to meet and where ratepayers assembled once a year in rather crowded quarters at the time of municipal elections township halls have come to mean some very fine new buitdings in this county of recent years and have become an assembly place frequently used many nights of the year they have largely become community centres for icral and urban citizens all will agree they are performing an important part in the social life of cur communities in the modern school buildings of the towns today an important part of the plans calls for a gymnasium many times this part of the building is really not a gymnasium but is more often used as an auditorium not only for the assembly of school children but for the meeting place in the evenings for adult groups for social and cultural activities during the past months we have had an op portunity to see many of these socalled gym nasiums in evor case the are more frequently used by the whole community than they are for gymnastics of the school children true there is some gymnastic equipment in them but in ever case we have seen the emphasis is on the audi torium equipment and its adaplabilitv tor as sembly ot community groups in man places its filling the need of the old town hall winch lji become inadequate m the jfkns jusf as our thinking has been altered in re gard to township halls so it s necessary to alter our conception of the socalled gymnasiums in cluded in present day school buildings they should be regarded as community centres and emphasis placed on their use as an auditorium for all age groups rather than the other use them for school gymnjstics given to officially ended rather interesting to note in tho news this week that the war with japan was officially closed there has always boon trouble in getting this job done officially most of us can remember that backin 1945 when the cease fire ordor was givon tho official announcement was withhold for all ono day while the world waited in sus pense for tho officials tcj got together and all speak at onco presuming hat official announce ment has now been made tho next stop will bo for tho resumption of trade relations with tho rest of the world already japanese products have boon appear ing on the market in canada and resumption of trade with many of these nations with whom we have been at wafwill mean ts change in condi tions af home all during the war these nations were not producing materials and we on this continent had a sharing of the markets which were out of production and also supplying an accelerated demand to the home market getting intp that position necessitated many changes and gettingout will undoubtedly see just as many changes in the reverse it is to be hoped that our peacetime practices in the world of trade will not take us again into conflict with other nations of the world tolerance will be required on both sides if another world war is to be avoided its not just a matter that statesmen alone can settle it is a striving for peace that must be sought by people of all lands definitely peace is worth the tolerance required grim summer harvest another phase the farmers know it and most everyone else is coming to a realization that prices are definitefy lower the cost of living index has dropped two months in a row and will likely dip further com- mctdity prices the retail price governor has been
