thursday january 17th 1082 the acton free press acton ontario fashion hint sbe fashion headlines from paris reveal that a great deal is bclntf made this year of nothing much to worry about theres no- new look io contend with nothing terribly drastic althoush there wan quib bling about aklrt lengths they stay ed about the same it was in the hem that there was the biggest vaviatlon and extreme variation within the ranks so to speak it 11 boils down to skirts either one very full or two very slim ami both are attractive heres one of the slims its romantically called an after five frock if after five entails anything more tumorous than supper and dishes for an hour or so a decolleue of tfold brocade over the slim pegged aklrt of crepe will be a hit after eight anyway if you have a bundle buggy or a golf caddy cart you might try stor ing the cylinder type vacuum cleaner and its attachments in it secsaa to us that either of these gad get could be put to better use dur ing the written specialty for iheacum pre r by of course it is just my imagin ation but it just seems to me that withaventbad any realbrnshort- days this winter it could be that with so many dull days and hav ing to turn on the lights so often the change between daylight and dark hasnt been so noticeable what o difference hydro makes looking bock through the years i remember how we used to dread the short days how wc hated hav ing to light the coaloil lamps be fore supper and what o chore it was if we needed something from upstairs or down in the cellar to have to carry a lamp or flashlight around with us and doing chores at the barn with only the dim light of a lantern to see by or going to and from the bam in o high wind keeping the lantern on the iceside so the wind wouldnt blow it out how we ever got along as well as we did is a marvel wc still com plain when we have a lot of dull weather but when we stop to re member those prehydro days our complaints ease off a bit sometimes when i speak in praise of hydro i wonder if there are any home in which this col umn is read where hydro has not yet come along if so i hope no one will think i am rubbing it in if hydro is not available well there isnt much you can do about it until the line comes through if it is available and you doat take advantage of it then that is just plain foolishness perhaps you may say thats all very well but we ennt afford to have the hydro put in to that i would answer you just cant af ford not to have it install it and you have the use of it as long as you need it list your farm for sale and hydro helps to sell it these days who do you think will buy a farm if electricity li not already hooked up nnd ready to use but even with hvdro winter still has its problems pnd chief among them is snow after a storm snow- ploughs are busy day and nip clearing the highways and byways and making a wonderful job of it too especially at the entrance to farm lanes but there are atlll those farm lanes to contend with there are a few littleused lares around here that hnve been impas sably since november it seems to me keeping farm lanes open is a problem that will hnve to be solved sooner or later how well a farm lane has bcea kept open up to the present has depended upon the amount of traf fic coming in and out the lenjth nnd lay of the lane nnd what means have been tnken to keep it open an elevated lane does not fill in as quickly as one that is level with the land a short lane can be shovelled without too much trouble but a long lane needs a shelter belt or snow fence against the pre vailing winds manv farmers have hired snowploughs to clear their lanes on to hive them fill in again sometimes uithm i few hours which to sa the least is discouraging a sm ill plough dm s i good job but if it ls followed b more drjft- lj snow firmi rs know from ex- n rlence that the lam fllb in worse th m tir snowptoughing to be ef fective hi to be continuous for hint s as well as roach ilut how is th it possible seems tin tint ls i pit stum tint might 11 hi distussed b ridio firm forum perhaps theie ii an oppor- tuni hn for co operitii nter- prim oi pi rh ips ich township mi h h n t out ot moi t ploughs pociffcmuy for clearing lanes es pecially wheno such lanes runout to provincial highway or county roads naturallysuch an undertaking costs money and if we want extra service we have to pay for it a condition which we are sometimes inclined to overlook but some means of keeping form lanes open would wave wear on cars and trucks it would eliminate the need and expense of a towtruck or tractor and save many manhours of shovelling it might even save lives when a doctor is needed hi hurry or tt arises- necessitating the removal of a patient to hospital well maybe i havent come up wtth the right answbr and i know the problem is difficult on to solve but i still feel that some organised effort should be made to keep farm lanes open in winter last week saw another improve ment in this district our party telephone line was literally cut in two now w have only ten on our line three of whom hardly usa the telephone at all before the changeover the phone was ringing all the time and it was almost im possible to use the line without interruption now the bells hardly ring at all now we shall have a little peace until more houses ore built and more telephones are ad ded to our party line letter to editor appreciates aid given by firemen jul no 1 acton ontario tw mr editor the writer v wilson barrett who recently took up farming on the blue springs road in nassa- gaweya halton county would like to publicly express through your newspapen a deep fck gratitude io the acton volunteer sire brigade wilf mceachem and fred dowkws for their unselfish response when called to our farm home about 3 a m christmas morning their prompt notion probably save an other of the all too many fires in unprotected areas wc were awakened by my daugh ter who was aroused by dense smoke our own amateur efforts were not sufficient to find the actual source therefore we phoned chief dawk in a braving deep snow and cold and sacrificing christmas eve entertainment they arrived promptly and
