gifts and to close an enjoyable evening re freshments were served fine concert given by citizens band acton masons entertain ladies neighbours honor recently wed couple at party monday evening event and nearly 400 students were on hand to watch end contest the events in this annual meet track conditions were favourable and smooth organization carried the event to a successful conclusion with the comfort and economy i the first concert of the recently formed acton citizens band was presented last sunday evening in the roxy theatre acton a varied program displayed the capabilities of the organization which is under the leadership or bandmaster a perrott after o canada the band launched into its repertoire which included hymns a waltz marches novelty numbers and an overture the master of ceremonies for the evening was g w mckenzie the acton citizens band which has been practicing each week in the band hall is an amalgamation of members of the acton boys and girls band and the former acton citizens band there is still room for more players in the group which is planning more concerts in the park during the summer g w mckenzie commented the roxy theatre was given free of charge for the concert sunday with a silver collection at the door netting almost 17 the acton citizens band certain ly made an impressive spring debut ladies night in walker lodge a f and a m grows bigger and better and so it was with this years event held last night wed nesday in esqucslng township hall at steworttown and attended by about 200 the masonic breth ren certainly attended well to the pleasure of their ladles with cor dages entertainment prizes and food adding to a social evening that will long be remembered there were cards with flowers for- the lady winners and pickles for the men mrs watkins reecho ed a lovely box of flowers and the worshipful master was given the microphone for fifteen minutes on the entertainment part of the program elmer smith had a fine variety headed by vincc and al mock ridge and alf sutton of brampt miss angela ant- onelh clare smrh and earl ray it was a round of fun with plenty of community singing vincc and al mock ridge have recently ap peared on a tv show across the border and are up and corners in the entertainment field flowers went to cuuples winning novelty dances and to mrs g mckenzie for winning a cnntem and to the senior and junior lad ies mrs wm cooper and lrs ron davies the food table were presided over by the men with wes wolfe and len lovell doing the carving it was buffet style with turkey and a thirtyfive ptumd roast of beef starting off the table that loaded down the plates with evcy delicacy up to cake ice cream and a variety of cheeses last monday evening some 25 neighbors met nt the home of mr and mrs j toronto miss gowdy graduated from hav- ergale college toronto and from the eastern school for physicians aides new york two choirs given festival seconds to compile acton plan estimat cost at 1500 land surveyors were authorized to go ahead with the new compil ed plan of acton for the estimated price of 1500 at the inst regular meet ing of theacion planning board on friday may 1 1th a letter from bowman black and shoemaker pointed out the surveyors recommenda tions which they felt would make a satisfactory plan the surveyors were to bo invited to a meeting of the board to discuss the plan in general the main points of the survey would be to eliminate the toronto office closed friday for weekend holiday victoria day this year fulls on thursday as was ouf custom last year with a mid week occurrence of the day we will observe friday may 25th and in order that our employees may enjoy a long weekend the free press of fice will be closed all day friday and saturday there is nothing unusual in this change if christmas or new years falls on a sunday the following mon day is observed the free press will be issued as usual on thursdayncxt week and on sale in the stores which are open we have made arrangement for them to go into the post office to that delivery will be made on friday as usual the 20th annual halton music festival was held in knox presby terian church milton on thurs clay and friday may 10th and 11th the adjudicator mr george smal directorof music ontario school for the blind remarked on the unusually high marks and spendid quality and performance of all con testants and choirs when selecting the test pieces for the festival mr smale stated he chose difficult numbers especially for the high schools but certainly was pleased to see how well they were sung and what high marks were awarded on thursday evening the aud ience was favoured by solos from the three 1050 scholarship winners shirley forbes georgetown marj- orie scott oakville ond david paw- son oakville the adjudicator regretted the ai- sencc of solo and duet classes in the urban public schools this year and hoped they would be included in future festivals the george town high school girls choir gave two noncompetitive selections to bring the festival to a close on friday afternoon medals were f continued on page five james a dills who graduated last week from the ryerson institute of technology and joins the staff of the acton free press and the canadian champion he was a winner of one of the six silver medals awarded for general proficiency and a lead ing student in the coveted award on monday night at the meeting of walker lodge af a m he was presented with the 50 year jewel marking a half century of member ship in the masonic order w bro ivan harris uws presented with the past masters jewel at this same meeting bro mcintosh joined walker lodge 50 years ago and is among the veterans of the order here he has served the lodge in all the of fices including the masters chair and has been honored by grand lodge suburban railway and revert to original lots of duly registered plans of subdivisions to date to search the begjirtry office to find the present public tchool took second place in their class at the halton county music festival last friday in milton the top group is the junior choir of 25 voices that was awarded the festival association shield the lower group is the senior choir of 45 voices that was awarded the miss minnie moore shield contest number for the lunior group was the dream man and for the senior group the shepherd miss linda stew art trained the children staff photos the kindergarten pi imarv pupils and their teacher miss j mcphail ntertamed at a mothers tea last monday and tuesday ifternoon after displaying their ability in dancing and singing the two clas ses of children jteented their mothers with gifts thev had made for them at previous clashes hefreshmehts were served each afternoon with helen luxtun elaine itachhn bernice sargent joyce holllday lorraine tyler and cheryl morton helping miss mc phail the town clerk also wrote re garding the boards recommenda tion ironcerning grades and levels for mill and main stsas defined by the department of highways and concurred that they should be established before any sidewalks are laid or permanent work com menced the recommendation of the board concerning the curbing on young st was investigated by the joint sewer and road committee of council and while they agreed with the planning boards suggestion they did not wish to break the or iginal contract with spartan con struction co which was having the curb replaced at a low cost it was felt that if they were asked to do any more than was necessary the cost might increase beyond the original contract figure the work will be done later by an individual or by town employees the members of the board visited the lahc on the west side of the property of w wolfe who had written requesting permission to purchase the lane so he could make extensive alterations to his dwel ling the lane was open at the west side of the wolfe property and at the rear of lots hi 15 u 13 12 11 and 10 opening on alice st played an import ant part m that great industrial achievement at a temperature of 1700 degrees the ingikjtarted on its journey in a cradle of a p green coi re- factory product kastolite previously ingots had to be cooled before shipment and re heated after taking two months al together to save this time a steel box was built on a large size flat car the ingot was placed in the cradle and then completely covered with loose insulation material the lid was put on and the train itarted rolling the ingot left sydney at 1700 degrees and arrived at trenton at a little over 1500 degrees a loss of less than 200 degrees in 22 hours and the quality of the steel had improved duripg thcerocets the cradle was undamaged dur ing the trip and was in good condi tion for another the steel plant superintendent was quite satisfied with the a jp green product and tatd he would continue to use it
