evening one of the outstanding meetings ol halton presbytery hamilton confer ence the united church ot canada was held in milton on tuesday october 8th with morning afternoon and evening sessions the chairman rev c l poole b d acton introduced five new members rev j w magwood oak- vllle rev j l totton freeltorii rev w d clark mlllgrove rev h s iiovering trafalgar rev f matheson burlington new officers were elected rev s b stokes aldershott- chairman rev g i stephenson umehouse secretary and rev g p kelly carlisle treasurer the conveners of committees were ap pointed and other business transacted in the afternoon reports were received from the representatives to the general council at kingston rev c l poole mr a maclaren and mr j m denyes representatives of the various depart ments to connection with the united church met in st pauls united church milton on tuesday evening fowlscass the various phases of church work there were clergy church elders stewards re presentatives of the young peoples league indies aid sunday school and choir a feature of the gathering was the interpretative leading in the singing of the familiar hymns by rev mr stead- this leader emphasized the singing of the hymns to give expression to the words of the hymn rev st b stokes the newlyelected chairman of halton presbytery who succeeds rev c l poole had charge of the service mr stokes is pastor of the plains charge near burlington the duties of the christian church was the subject introduced by mr a maclaren and discussed by the various groups reports wererhade to the entire gathering by the secretary of each group and gave a great deal of helpful sugges tion in the advancement toward a better world the feature of the evening was an address by rev dr cochrane chairman of the maintenance and extension fund dr cochrane is a forceful speaker and his knowledge of the great work being accomplished by the church and the great need for the upkeep and further ing of this world made his address edu cational and inspirational the work of the united church and its wide spread activities was outlined and the good that all churches are doing in taking the gospel to the remote places one of the main resolutions of the day was passed unanimously by the presbytery and also confirmed by the unanimous vote of about 400 people at the evening open session it is as fol lows we the members and friends of the halton presbytery assembled commend the government of ontario upon their position with regard to liquor advertising and the efforts that are being made to enforce the liquor control act in gen eral we do however view with alarm the deplorable conditions arising out of the opening of beverages rooms for the freer sale of wine and beer this- condition is revealed 1 in the decrease of legitlmatebusl- ness such as the sale of milk ice cream and other wholesome food products 2 in the rapidly increasing number of traffic accidents 3 the very evident increase of drunk eness 4 the fact which we view with very great anxiety that so many of our youths both boys and girls are fre quenting these toeveragc rqoms we would urgg all our people in local option territory to jealously safeguard that advantage and if possible in places where it does not obtain to take steps a selection of news items married in acton a quiet but pretty wedding was solem nized at the manse acton on september 29th by thepastor rev h l bennie m a when christina tene second youngest daughter qf mr and mrs wm mcarthur acton became the bride of howard scott youngest son of mrs wm scott and the late wrn erin a ennaway boat saturday night as an automobile was proceeding east through acton with a boat mounted on a trailer in tow the connection of the trailer broke and the trailer with its boat went out of control it crashed into another car parked on mill street and was stopped thus from going through the front- window of irishmans billiard rooms the rear end of the boat was stove in and the fender of the car rather badly bent no one was injured united church anniversary anniversary services for the acton united church are announced for sun day next october 14th when rev w- b caswell b a of oakville will be the special speaker anniversary music by the choir will also be a feature of both the morning and evening service it is the tenth anniversary of the united church and the eightyninth of the old church the usual interdenomin ational courtesy will be shown and the service of knox church withdrawn in the morning and the baptist service in the evening plays presented the shakespearean plays the tam ing of the shrew and macbeth were presented in the town hall on tuesday evening by the richardson shakespear ean players to a wellfilled house dif ferent scenes from these wellknown plays were presented the plays were presented under the auspices of the literary society of the high school and the high school staff are very grateful to all those who assisted the school by attending between the various scenes piano solos were rendered by margaret harrison and beryl mcleod acton l o i has lodge visitors on wednesday october 10th the guelph degree team of l ol no 1331 visited acton l o l no 467 and- ex emplified the orange degree three candidates were initiated there were also visitors present from oakville aud glenwilliams lodges the room being filled with the large number present after the initiation several of the brothers gave brief addresses chief amongst them being wor county master bro w evans oakville wor county master bro j given of guelph past county master bro simpson guelph also several past masters of the various lodges a hearty vote of thanks to the degree team and visitors was accorded the work of the team was most iugtily spokeri of an excellent lunch was serv ed by the local lodge the singing of the national anthem closed a very suc cessful evening the lodge has made fine progress during the year actons oldest couple- mr and mrs william williams who this week remoyed to toronto and will reside in the city removed to toronto mr and mis williams who have been residents of acton for 59 years presentations by i o o f and neighbors presbyterian young peoples conference to secure it help for the west an appeal is being made for a carload of provisions to be shipped from acton u the need for assistance in western canada is still very urgent again this year the dry weather has left many families destitute and wholly dependent upon the generosity of the east on thursday and friday october 18th and 19th the united churches of this district have arranged for a car of pro visions to be loaded at acton station while the arrangements for the car have been sponsored toy the united church contributions are invited and requested of everyone who desires to assist the distribution in the west is made without regard of the denomination of the recip ients and solely on the basis of the greatest need everyone is therefore urged to contri bute as much as possible of foodstuffs to make up this carload and help those in the stricken sections of the west potatoes apples turnips groceries pro visions and foodstuffs of all klnd8 arc required no clothing can be sent in this car 7 chartered banks will assist new invest ors in refunding loan for the particular convenience of new investors who wish to subscribe in modest amounts for the bonds of the 1934 re funding loan the chartered banks have agreed with the dominion government to loan up to 75 of the par value of bonds purchased by new investors for example a 100 bond may be purchased with a deposit of 25 a 500 bond with a deposit of 125 and a 1000 bond with a deposit of 250 in each case the balance of payments may be spread over periods up at eight oclock and will be in charge of the two groups a and b on monday mr and mrs william wil liams removed to toronto to reside where their son mr heber williams and soninlaw and daughter mr and mis thos kilty are now resident mr and mrs williams are actons oldest couple they are 86 years of age and jojo christmas next will have been married for sixtyfive years few indeed are the couples who are spared to each other lor such a span of years they have resided in acton for 59 years com ing here from bowmanville for over thirtyfive years mr williams was in the boot and shoe business in acton retiring several years ago friends here wish them joy and comfort in the new home in the city and among the members of the family it is hoped that they will be able to visit acton quite frequently mr williams was also one of the old est oddfellows in the province fifty- eight years ago he was one of the first seven to join acton lodge i o o f when it was formed mr williams re calls that five of those first candidates were dr mcgarvin john and william wlnlow- and jas mclam and himself the other two candidates he could not recall last thursday evening his brethren of the three links order paid a surprise visit to the home and presented mr williams with a set of gold cuff linksn mr r m macdonald made the address and mr e coles the presentation of these emblems the aged brother made a very appropriate reply thanking the order for the remembrance on saturday evening the neighbors called at the home of mr and mrs wm williams on lake avenue to say good bye and wish them all happiness in first orsartw presbyterian young peoples conference was held in knox church toronto on the 6th 7th and 8th of october the conference opened on saturday afternoon with the pre sident mr ernest woodie of toronto lri the chair discussion groups were very ably handled by various leaders of young peoples work in the evenings very enjoyable banquet was held in the round room of eatons college street greetings were received from all the presbyteries and mr richard stewart president of the paris young- peoples society was toastmaster at 830 the delegates assembled again in knox church to hear a very in spirational address by principal f scott mackenzie of montreal college greet ings were brought from the city of tor onto by controller simpson the an glican young peoples association the baptist young peoples union the chris tian endeavor and various other societies on sunday morning at nine oclock communion was held in knox college chapel and was conducted by dr stuart c parker of st andrews church tor onto at eleven oclock the moderator of the general assembly dr j s shortt preached at the 114th anniversary service of knox church the delegates again assembled in the af ternoon and the worship service was held by kenneth saundersof the sarnia presbytery dr andrew s grant gave an address deepening the spiritual life and afterwards discussion groups were again held the final session of the conference was held on monday morning with cameron mctaggart of london in the chair the presentation of group find ings was given and these were reviewed by dr w m kannawin a group photograph was taken and a very inter esting demonstration ofrecreational methods was given by rev h m coulter of brampton the final reports of the business committees were given and the conference adjourned about onethirty the afternoon was left open to the delegates for a 1 ugby game at the varsiiy stadium or a bus tour of the city the theme of this first provincial presbyterianconference was hands of councillor w a lasby and reeve thetford nothing has been done as yet about the baseball diamond which is to be fixed up the streets and walks of the town arc to be patched up it was moved by w a lasby and seconded by s m lasby that the drink ing fountain be removed from in front of the post office to a position in front of the y m c a provided the consent and approval of the womens institute to such removal is obtained and that such consent and approval be requested immediately carried a motion was passed empowering the reeve and treasurer to pay small ac counts of the murray- memorial building fund between council meetings limiting the amount to 5000 a letter from lachlan mcmillan ex pressing thanks for the flowers and letter of sympathy sent his father was re ceived and read r a motion was put through empower ing the clerk to sign the deed of the public utilities commission property and to pay them the purchase price agreed upon the deed was to be made in the name of the corporation of acton the chief of police was instructed to take the account of the western hos pital toronto for an indigent arid col lect the list of arrears of taxes was gone over and a number marked for court proceedings each owner who was three years in arrears was to be notified that they were liable for ai tax sale mr d mcdougall brought in a mammoth doole potato on tuesday morning that weighed exactly two and a half pounds there was only the one potato in the hill and the stock was a healthy one one side of the spud bears a striking resemblance to a human facj the two eyes and nose village life of thelr savage customs arid later showed how successfully the missionaries were chris tianizing central africa mr banfleld said that uganda was one of the most promising mission fields in the world today for many years head of the beardmore co had been in falling health since august george walthen beardmore of tor onto for many years head of the beard more leather industries whose plants are located at acton died at wellesley hospital in thecity last night in his 84th year he had been in failing health since august he was a frequent visitor to acton and the plants here during former years when he was more actlmly associated with the company h was born in hamilton educated at upper canada college and felstead grammar school essex england he embarked on a commercial career and until within the last few years was ac tively connected with the leather trade to its various ramifications he was one of the founders and a director of the national life assurance co of canada and at one period a director of the canadian general electric co he wageneroustotn aegreetoupper canada college and founded several prizes for general proficiency in the school in 1887 the year of queen vic torias golden jubilee he was president of st georges society and proved a regal host at its several functions from that time until the present year he never missed attending the annual cele was injured about the neck and leg3 while r dunbar fatherirlaw of mr moore and a passenger in his car re ceived head injuries which did not how ever require his removal to hospital mr redmond was walking on the highway wh6n he was knocked down by a machine driven by h m taylor walmer road toronto mr redmond had run out of gasoline and was walking back from the farm house with a quantity of motor fuel in a wash basin when the car proceed ing in the same direction struck him with v right front fender another car was coming from the opposite direc tion at the time both accidents occur red cillors albert lush j a stewart and john hindley mr john henderson tendered his re signation as constable explaining that other duties would not permit proper attention to the office the resigna tion was accepted and no action was taken regarding a successor a bylaw was passed on motion of messrs lush and stewart confirming the new arrangements regarding pay ment of taxes messrs fred l wright and h j gib bons were present seeking the coopera tion of council with the acton and rockwood branch of the canadian legion in the interests of the poppy fund and the remembrance day ser- vice a grant of
