scholars and friends were in attendance at the annual school games in the parkyesterday efternon all the events were keenly contested and rivalry for flret place and attaining high marks in proficiency inallthe sports were well striven for there was also a fine feeling of sportsmanship throughout au events were over in good time this year the high school started some of their trials in the momin and this enabled completing the program well before dusk teachers were assisted in carrying on the program by a commit tee of citizens the following are the results in the public and high thet- ford were present the secretary was by motion in structed to pay the following accounts hydro department canadian general electric co repairs 225 c n r express 45 sangamo company ltd metre 3842 j e peareen rent 3000 a selection of news items 7112 waterworks department canadian brass co supplies 4355 big a company ltd supplies 1670 charles spires labor 270 hydro department power at spring 3611 9906 the purchase of a pipe pusher was discussed but it was decided to defer purchase of this article for the present time the lease submitted by the local commission to the ontario hydro com mission was returned certain points were drawn to the attention of the commission and suggestions made for their inclusion in the lease the latter from the ontario commission gave ap proval of the local commission leasing space in the building authority was also given in writing to sell the lot commissioner r j kerr drew to the attention of the commission that no provision was made in lease for the caretaker of the building to keep the sidewalk shovelled and the side drive clear of snow reeve thetford refused to ask this of the board of governors and said that if it must be included that mr kerr would have to request it himself the matter was then dropped as it was the desire to complete the lease and transfer of the property the secretary was instructed to send the letters to the council and the pro visional board of governors of the y m c a so that the necessary docu ments could be completed and changes made as desired the list of arrears was carefully check ed and instructions issued for their dis position building progress bricklayers at work on new y m c a building first floor is completed and all material on hand continued good progress is being rsa3e on the murray memorial y m c a building- the front section with first floor was completed for the service of saturday the steel girders for the two rear sections were placed at the first of the week and the joists along one side laid this enabled a few bricklayers to go to work on tuesday on the front and west side of the building the staff of bricklayers ready to start was however delayed until the carpenters could com plete then- work on the first floor the cement tile for the gymnasiui1 section and the roman cut stone for the sills and front entrance have all been delivered at the building ready for erection it is expected that the full staff of bricklayers will be on the work possibly by tomorrow general approval of the fine selection of brick is given and the colors and appearance will make this a very attractive building the door and window frames are all delivered and ready for inclusion in the building- all the steel girders for the sesond storey and to carry the roof of the of devonshire chapter of the i o d e met on tuesday evening at the home of mrs jas symon there was a splendid attendance and the meet ing was l11 charge of mrs w m cooper regent instrumental numbers were given by mrs f s blow and mrs wm hall and readings by miss m r nelson plans for the fall and winter program were discussed the award given by the society for the pupil of acton public school obtaining the highest standing in the entrauice examinations the past year was made to frances dills at this meet ing at the close e delightful lunch was served and a social time spent institute competition proved interesting a competition for the halton branches of the womens institute was held at the milton fair and proved most interest ing exhitit the senior class called for a useful article made from a yard of factory cotton a little boys twopiece suit sent in by the hornby branch won first prize second prize went to mount union institute for a breakfast cloth junior class was a fancy article also made from a yaid of factory cotton with dublin branch winning first prize and mouuit union second prizes were donated ty mrs g c atkins bronte mrs william gowdy limehouse mrs milligan burlington and the palermo womens institute sixyearold norval child killed by auto crossing the road near her home after alighting from a car in which she had been driven from school helen bonner aged six daughter of mr and mrs roger bonner of norval was struck by another car and instantly killed late yesterday afternoon the car was driven by harold k tylor of st clair avenue west toronto the child who had been attending school for the first time this fall had been driven home with some companioois by a passing motorist r h- peters of new toronto peters drove on to brampton for medical aid and later reported to chief constable an drew hexkes acting coroner frank vandcrlip decided an inquest was un necessary two wen hurt when cars crash two rrcn were taken to hospital on the home of miss m symoi it was the occasion of the graduation of the junior chapter to a primary chapter mrs ernest of kitch ener i o d e provincial organizer perfomcd the honors and presented the regent iisj vda ramshaw with the new charter following which she gave a most instructive talk on the work the chapter will undertake in the future mrs manne of hamilton i o d e provincial secretary also gave an ex planation of other branches of work per taining to the order the executive of the duke or devonshire chapter i o d e wexc guests at this meeting the lakeside chapter regular business meet ing was then conducted a most delight ful lunch- was served by the group host esses and concluded an enjoyable even- the churches and sunday schools unite 1 new of acton and j the district united presbyterian and baptist hold combined rally day services j sunday last was rally day and in the united presbyterian and baptist churches in acton the morning service was a combined service of sunday school and church at the united church mr a t brown superintendent of the sunday school was in charge and led in the service rev c l poole gave an ad dress and mr brown the srubject a century and a half of the sunday school movement a pageant was presented by the scholars sunday school visit ors from far places little betty gib son contributed a sweetly rendered solo a special rally day service was held by the baptist church sunday school on sunday morning included in a most interesting and worshipful program was the rst scripture lesson read by the junior girls in unison and the second lesson read by the seniors girls fred atkinson gave a recitation o happy home mr g r easter the pastor gave an address on the subject christ in the life of the home a baptismal service was held in the baptist church on sunday morning when two young ladles were baptized by mr g r easter mr easter preached a forceful sermon from the text joseph of arimathea being a disciple of jesus but secretly for fear of the jews the baptistry was beautifully banked with a profusion of flowers a fine attendance of the school on sunday met with 1he congregation at knox church on sunday morning and took part in the service of prayer and praise under the direction of the sup erintendent mr r n brown and the minister rev h l bennie the scrip ture readings were taken by mae roney and vernon agnew and a trio of the teachers misses l hall l woodhall and l wilson furnished the musical selec tion for you i am praying the theme of the service was gods place and the rev h l bennie spoke on the subject our all for god rally day always marks the distribution of di plomas and prizes for the memorization of scripture and this year over thirty rewards were given for the different parts of the course prescribed by the sabbath school committee of the church the teachers were thanked by mr brown for their patience and diligence in this department in keeping up the work and the scholars were reminded that they had added to their value as future men and women by thus acquiring a first hand knowledge of the scriptures it was announced that the sabbath school would meet for another month in the morning sustained back injuries when he was thrown to the ground while administering a drench to a horse james laurence r r no 4 rockwood received painful injuries to his back thej a cool damp afternoon did not deter horse was ill and mr larrence was on saturdayr a splendid attendance at giving it treatment the animal heaved the ceremony in connection with the corner stone of murray memorial ym ca laid by w a with a serious accident when their car driven by the latter crashed into a car owned and driven by joseph willmott it is alleged willmott drove onto the highway from his laney directly in front of the jones car willmott allowed a car driven by norman stover of milton to pass the lane and evidently did not see the jones car followbag bert jones was thrown out of his car on the rear fender of willmotts car jones was removed to his home on king street mllton it is believed he suf fered serious internal injuries jones car was wrecked jones a carpenter fell while repairing a greenhouse on friday and broke his left wrist the injured arm being in a sling when the motor car accident occurred his son charles escaped with less serious injuries milton fair last saturday in spite of
