decrease in the number of deaths from ex ternal violence in 1931 as compared with 1930 is shown in statistics issued last week preliminary figures given out by the dominion bureau of statis tics show that the number- of deaths of this character hr 1931 was 7146 as compared with 7478 in 1930 andt151 in 1929 the rate per 100000 of popula tion was 69 in 1931 as against 73 in 1930 and 71 in 1929 and 1928 suicides showed a slight decliije in 1931 as compared with the preceding year the num ber being 1004 as against 1010 but both of these years showed a marked advance over 1929 when suicides numbered 35 r chronicles of ginger farm written specially for the free press by gwendoline p clabke jepoia s overstepped when trying to figure out why your taxes areo htgh do not overlook the significant fact that the bonded debt of canadian provinces rose from 218- ooooqo in 1916 to 919000000 in 1930 and that ontario has the greatest debt 398000000 more than that of all the other provinces combined in terest payments alone on ontarios debt last year amounted to 18000000 now the province has gone and issued another 20000000 in bonds bring ing thetotalto well over the fourhundredmillion markr itis true that a substantial part of this total was invested in revenueproducing assets but for an other part there is naught to show ontario has overstepped- theboun dso p ex and its citizens will have to pay the piper simcoe re- f in the eyes of the world all fcysare on ottawa this week and the imperial conference which opened its deliberations there by many it appears that great things are anticipated and immediate benefits are expected anything that is to be lasting and permanent cannot be achieved in a moment it is a time when we must have a measure of faith in our representatives decisions may be arrived at that at the moment seeirjudetrimental to our individual interests if the greatest good is to be accomplished we must be prepared to make some sacrifices andtiotexpecr allthefinest and bestfor ourselves to the detriment of others only as the empire is considered as a whole may all expect to prosper and progress a clamoring populace each grasping for the greatest benefits will mitigate the work of any body it is to be hoped that no section will be insistent to the detriment of the common good of all the imperial conferencerand canada as the assembly place of this gathering are being watched by theworrd at the moment wirfcr in tlw greater things last week it was our privilege to visit and inspect the bolton camp of the neighborhood workers as sociation we had visited the place before and glanc ed at the buildings from a car but a more minute inspection coupled with an explanation of the aims of the institution was most interesting and showed what a great work was being accomplished the prisons and reformatories which are now used to segregate from organized society those who have committed crimes will in the next generation have fewer occupants as a result of such places as the bolton institution the transferring of those who are in straightened circumstances for a brief period out among the wide areas and majestic hills where plenty of good wholesome food is provided is bqund to work a spirit of better feeling into these cramped lives the boys and the girls who are deprived of summer outings otherwise must go back to the city with cleaner thoughts and higher ambitions after a stay in these inviting surroundings and the modern way of play in the teaching the better things pre dominates and thus these children unconsciously absorb the better things aimed to inculcate most of jthe workers are volunteers who take a period of at it two weeks in this endeavor the immediate its may not be visible from these labors but we that the next generation will reap the benefit ijsaner manhopd and womanhood in ontario editorial notes wonder what interest in the united states stands the cost of the plates attached to automobiles calling for the repeal of the eighteenth amendment the voice of canada was the name of the globes special edition on monday a perusal of the contents gave thetmpression that toronto yells the loudest there are altogether 560000 square miles in canada s aside as bird sanctuaries in these sanc- tuaries no shooting trapping or killing of birds is permitted another speed record has been attained on the water by kaye don it was won in scotland where the american smart tricks- are not practiced and british sportsmanship prevails what the united states needs most at the present time is not a repeal of any part of its constitution but an adherence more closely to the constitution that is supposed to guide its destinies ahisntdailynewsjnthe daily papers aiutem regarding the w c t u convention in acton got prominent places in the dailies last week which had appeared in the free press of june 30 like all questions the waterways proposal is laud ed by many and condemned by many more however it will be ten years before its completion and by that time we will have the subject well discussed there are 9888 manufacturing establishments in the province of ontario with an annual production valued at 1713025322 according to the latest official statistics these factories give employment to 307477 persons monday august 1 has been proclaimed civic holiday let every loyal citizen observe it with true civic spirit its the one holiday in the year that is governed solely by the individual municipalities and yet it has come to be set in most instances on the same day in this section another link in the allcanada automobile high way from coast to coast was completed with formal opening of the section connecting the provinces of manitoba and ontario on july 1 the section just completed is 145 miles long and runs through a cbuntry of great scenic beauty adjoining the lake of the woods last sunday morning i awoke with a start ju6t as the clock struck five and then in a flash came the delightful realization that it was sunday oh it was a grand and glorious leelhig no porridge to make and an extra hour in bed a day of rest antquietness i spent most of the ensuing hour gloating over the fact that i was still between the bed clothes at six a m i ibegan to hustle there iwere chickens to feed and chil dren to get ready for sunday school by eight oclock once i was on the move i attacked my job with energetic joy but alas my joy was short lived for wlieri i went to feed my chickens there were thir teen of j stretched out dead on the floor i called partner and together we investigated the cause finding as we did so more dead chickens and a hole in the wall where some animal or creature unknown had gnawed its way through summeb breakfasts by mollie martin just another angle the invasion of the farmers on ottawa last sat urday will be reviewed with mixed opinions when the success of the undertaking is considered although most everyone else knew the size of the delegation which was to visit the primeminister it seems that mt bennett was wholly unaware of the excursion delegation of two thousand of course mr j j morrison may have considered a delegation of two thousand only small in comparison with the possible number of farmers in canada the fact remainsd carried off as many chickens as were however that whatever the arrangements or reasons that may be advanced the delegation and the prime minister or his representatives did not get together everyone will have sympathy for the head of the government in the activity that must be engaging igs every moment in preparation for the imperial conference and it is just possible that it might have been wiser to have had the delegation at ottawa earli er still the comparison crops up that a few moments could not be spared when the farmers representa tives were assembled literally next door and yet at election time these same individuals can be sought out in the farthest corners of the dominion and a message delivered to them by radio or any other means politics and governments dire queer insti tutions and now over two thousand farmers and others who have read about the reception have an other angle to consider small enough to go through the hole we counted nineteen altogether and dear knows how many more were carried away under the floor it may seem a small loss nineteen or twenty chickens when you can buy baby chicks for ten cents apiece but somehow i didnt look at it that way when i found my chick ens my incubator chickens which i had fussed over for so long lying dead on the floor the victims of wanton des truction i was just sick with disgust we blamed a skunk for this wholesale slaughter as only the night before part ner opened the bedroom window and then shut it down a lot quicker than he opened it a skunk and a strange dog were having an argument on the front lawn later however we surmised it was rats that were to blame which supposi tion squealer the barn cat confirmed by catching a rat in the henhouse on two successive mornings since then we have not lost any more chickens but yet i cannot et over a feeling of dread every time i go to feed them and i am always so relieved when all i find is a bunch of lively chickens ylpping away for their breakfast on monday i gave myself a holiday and worked hard all day that ma sound a bit irish but still it was a holiday because i was doing a job far more interesting than ordinary work i was terribly busy removing paint and varnish from an old clock and a walnut chest of drawers wtych i had picked up at a sale i would not dare to tell you what j paid for them you- would think i had kissed the blarney stone 1 i dont know whnt age the- she is tint tho mantel clock is dated 1878 and keeps splendid time of coursi and i a to tease me about my antique must confess the clock has rather wheezey chime and as partner says sounds rather like a car that refuses to start however hard the starter is stepped on not tlmt we have a car like that dear me no i am just thinking of ones that i have seen and heard on the street this has been a queer kind of week as far as weather is concerned one day wet and the next day fine and ditto repeato but in spite of rain the barn is getting nicely full of hay and none of it really spoilt how glad i am that partner has a man it makes it easier for both of us gives a man a job and also leaves me more free to take ad vantage of the quantities of wild rasp berries hanging red from the bushes it is lovely to havetherh so near ftpus that in an hour the children and i can go out and pick as many as we can possibly use for one meal i am still wondertig- why t v such a fascination to pick wild fruit from the fence corners perhaps it is the uncertainty in pick ing fruit from the garden or buying from the store one is reasonably sure of what one is going to get but there is none of the thrill one gets in suddenly coming across a bush of luscious blackcaps hid den away- in a secluded corner other years i havent had the time to go after them but now we are looking forward to raspberry pies raspberry vinegar raspberry shortcake and raspberries and cream galore in 1908 ontario had a population of two and a half million people and now the province has three and a half million in spite of that large increase in populaion the number of daily papers has fallen from 51 to 37 the number of weeklies has dropped from 408 to 169 aird thesemiweeklies from 17 to 9 it takes considerable effort and finances these days to keep up the publishing business but no commun ity that is progressive will allow its newspaper to stop existing our house is built of brick and this week we have had every reason to be thankful it is because we have been having it painted and although there appears to be so little to paint it took a long time to do and ran away with such a lot of paint and there are still all the doors and windows to do because we only had a man to do the parts one would have to have a ladder to teach i lke painting but not on a ladder and partner isnt much better there are times when i dont mind having my head in the clouds but i do like to keep my feet on the good old earth of course our small son had to get the painting crate too and brought out his wagon and homemade threshing machine and beg ged for some paint to paint them his delight knew no bounds when clad in his castaway overalls he was given paint aijjl a brush and painted away to his hearts content without once being told to mind what he was doing i there are still traces of red paint on his neck and ears which only time wjil obliterate but what is that to a small boy peter the pup also joined in the fun and picked up the painty paint brush in his teeth and ran away with it after that he chased the hens and then we all chased peter and tied him up and o ends another week the summer breakfast is a very im portant meijjparticularly for children too much heavy food must not be eaten in hot weather but on the other hand romping children need considerable nourishment to carry them through a strenuous vacation morning of play lightnourishing food and drinks are in order fruit breakfast food toast and a cereal beverage made with whole milk is a suggested menu if the chil dren will eat a small portion of bacon or eggs let them have it for appetite is a good gauge of need with such foods little bodies are well fortified the children eventhase who refuse to drinfe plain milk secure milk from their cereal beverage this
